Breastpumping at concert

Jourl · 24/05/2024 20:00

AIBU for planning on pumping at a concert? I'm planning on taking my hand pump with me and a couple empty bottles to store then discard.

Does anyone know if I'll be okay taking in this? I've enquired with the venue but had no response.

For clarity it is Taylor Swift at Wembley

It should be fine. When I was pumping for dc4 I used to do it everywhere. I would never have left the house if I didn't. As it was I went on holiday when he was a few weeks old and it felt like I went to every cafe in North Wales and nowhere else!

Wait. Were you in the tent next to me on a Welsh campsite? If so it took me days to work out what that strange noise was…

AWWWWWWWWW my ribs might of crackt-"FOR clarity -its Taylor swift at wembley" .....on you go! thats really funny. .....

OMG I just had a flashback to travelling with DD. Security bloke asked me about DD (very little) and asked what she was eating during the flight. I answered, "milk". He said, "where is it?". Well readers, I told him.

What an idiot.

Matildahoney · 25/05/2024 06:15

Hi OP, I was trying to find this info for a concert I'm going to, nothing helpful on their website like Murrayfields! But theirs said if you need to take medical equipment email the accessibility email address, don't know if you've emailed a standard one or the accessibility one, but it may be worth a try. I think there are a lot of laws or rules around bf & expressing now eg in the workplace that they shouldn't really be able to say no.

And those saying just hand express, not everyone can do this, I've never been able to hand express so will need to pump.

Wow these look amazing. Things have definitely moved on since I had my dd. I see there have been a few posts telling you how to sort this out and echoing that not everyone can hand express a little or wait. I missed one feed when dd was 6 weeks old. The pressure was agony and caused stretch marks.

Wembley stadium website says you are allowed clear, empty, plastic bottles upto 500ml.

However I wouldn't take your best ones. At a gig last week (not wembley) they would not allow any bottles in with lids etc...and were making people leave them at the door.

That's the norm at every concert.
I always keep a bottle cap in my bag though and as soon as I'm in I put it on the bottle 😅

If you feel comfortable with people looking then go for it. Once I'd twigged what you were doing I'd look away, but I'd probably look for a while trying to make sense of it!

Does it normally take you a long time to register the extremely obvious thing that's happening in front of you?

That did just make me haha out loud!

I hope he felt daft!

SandandSky · 25/05/2024 07:25

Good for you OP - pump wherever you like and have a bloody good time.

I was in a similar position and went to a concert when mine were very little and although I had an elvie I didn’t want to risk having it taken off me when I’d just paid £500 for it

MadeofCheeese · 25/05/2024 07:32

Some of the replies on here are quite sad. I would look at you and smile that you were taking a step forwards for us all, but then again I am a millennial. . .

PurBal · 24/05/2024 20:11

I don’t really get how this is weird.

this. It’s just a medical necessity in my mind. I wouldn’t double take at someone taking medicine, paracetomol, etc

Why are women so anti women.

also enjoy Taylor!!!

Aren't most people on this thread likely to be millennials, given the website and the thread topic?

HealthConcerns · 25/05/2024 07:37

Not weird at all. Can you get an Evie (or whatever the one that sits inside your bra is called) then no one will know

Goslingsforlife · 25/05/2024 07:37

MaryMaryVeryContrary · 24/05/2024 20:02

What so other people will have to see you pumping breast milk?

No way sorry

you clearly have never BF and you aren't very familiar with the working of the body of a lactating mother! You don't stop making milk just because you see Taylor!

I would do it. I wouldn't bat an eye lid. what else can you do? leak? nah.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 25/05/2024 07:37

I can't see why it wouldn't be allowed in, surely they have a requirement not to discriminate?!

I also wouldn't be phased at all by you doing it. If I noticed I'd probably just take care not to bump into you. I'd have thought most people would be the same but I guess there's some oddballs out there.

Roundroundthegarden · 25/05/2024 07:41

Go to the toilets and do it. No need to make a big show of it? You literally want to be sitting there pumping in the crowd? Only on MN.

Straightomyhead · 25/05/2024 07:41

I'm stunned by some of the replies on here. I have a 5 month old and our breastfeeding journey ended abruptly and pumping wasn't great for me but I totally support all those who breastfeed and pump to feed their children. Why would it make people uncomfortable! All the women I know don't flaunt it when doing either so I would go ahead as planned regarding pumping. You should be able to take the equipment in and if not ask for head of security when arriving.

Enjoy Taylor and totally support taking a day for yourself and to do something you enjoy!

Baseline14 · 25/05/2024 07:57

I pumped for a year and did it everywhere. Literally no one cared. And I didn't have the fancy wearable pumps that you get now, I was an over producer so had a large pump and 2 9oz bottles attached to the front of me and the pump was so noisy. If you tie one of the larger muslins around you like a bib no one sees anything.

I wouldn't care at all about the people around you or whether it's 'decent' to pump at a concert but the things that would concern me are will that mean you have to wear a pumping bra all night? (Mine was a sports bra with 2 holes cut in the middle so not the most flattering under a going out outfit). Also space in the arena would be a concern..what if someone nudges you while pumping and it knocks the bottle and you have to spend the next x hours smelling like souring milk?

Revelatio · 25/05/2024 08:02

I wouldn’t be able to pump standing up with hundreds of people pushing and dancing around me. They should have a special room, I would probably do it on the loo depending on where the special room was. You’ll be going to the toilet anyway(if you can hold on for a wee for over 3hrs I’m impressed!!), so why not just do it then?

Swifty1newmama · 25/05/2024 08:07

Really surprised at the previous comments on here! I’ll also be at Wembley and just assumed to pump would be acceptable in the loo or something would be fine! Looking at the demographic and length of the concert surely there’ll be quite a few people in the same situation, out of just my friends I know there’s already people who have had to change their plans due to baby arrival dates etc! Hand expressing/ breast pads may be enough for some but everyone’s breastfeeding journey is different.

Matildahoney · 25/05/2024 08:51

@Roundroundthegarden why should we miss part of a concert we have paid a lot of money for because there may be people like you might be uncomfortable with it?! I sure as hell will be sat in my seat doing it! It's as natural as breathing!

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 25/05/2024 08:56

Wouldn’t bother me at all - watching a concert I probably wouldn’t even notice!

If they’re funny about it then would you be able to hand express enough to stay comfortable, in the loo or something? Just enough to take the edge off until you are able to pump properly.

HillyHoney · 25/05/2024 09:14

Honestly, get a grip! She's not getting up on the fecking stage with Taylor...

So many comments about it being absolutely fiiiiiiine, OP!...as long as you're "discreet"/no-one sees a flash of boob or cottons on/you're not going to be doing it within a 1-mile radius of a pearl-clutching Swiftie...this is just a perfectly normal thing and any woman that needs to do it should just be allowed to get on with it in peace without the judgement. I'm grateful for the supportive sensible replies you've had too. Enjoy the gig!

Unforgettablefire · 25/05/2024 09:28

Congratulations on you baby OP. Plastic baby milk bottles and a pump will cause no issues for you, enjoy the concert.

The misogyny in this comment is just awful. You should be ashamed. She's doing the best by her baby and looking after her own medical needs.

What kind of self involved tw*t would you need to be to interpret that as 'making a big show' 🙄
