To think I had every right to be in the right hand lane when driving the speed limit on a dual carriage way

Dh thinks not.

So I’ve had to do a speed awareness course a while ago so do my best to keep to speed limits at all times.

Driving home on a curving dual carriage way on a slight tilt. 50 limit signs every few yards and a speed camera sign. The lane on the right turns into a fly over which I needed to keep on. So I was in the right hand lane driving at 50. A car came right up to my bumper and kept flashing. I stayed in the lane and pointed at the signs. He kept flashing then overtook me in a dramatic fashion, zoomed off( so breaking the speed limit) then slowed down so ended up driving not that faster than me but still over the limit.

Dh said I should have pulled over. I don’t understand why. Nobody on that road should be doing over 50 so what would be the benefit of me pulling over if I’m doing 50?

This is also not true. There's obvious ones like emergency vehicles. But also sometimes a safety reason to speed. The clearest example is a lorry changing lane into your lane without looking, you have someone close behind you, nothing in front, no lane to the other side. Accelerating out of the way is safer than the alternative.

This wasn’t a lorry or an emergency vehicle it was an arsehole. He clearly had no reason to overtake, he just wanted to be in front. He then stayed in the right hand lane!!! Why did he have more right to be there than me?

Ah you're a speed Marshall. Yes you should have pulled over.

Correct - one of the signs of a good driver!!

You will never be right on here on a driving thread, MN is full of drivers that think they are perfect.

You think you're a terrible driver and will admit it then? Refreshing.

Sirzy · 24/05/2024 20:22

so your a lane hogger but your accusing other drivers of being arseholes……

StormingNorman · 24/05/2024 20:22

This is a wind up isn’t it?

spannered · 24/05/2024 20:22

BobnLen · 24/05/2024 20:13

When someone is caught speeding on here people call them everything and say of course no one should speed but on this thread posters are saying people should speed, how very odd

I must have missed the posts where people were saying drivers should speed 🤔 two things can be true at once.

  1. Drivers shouldn't speed (with few exceptions)
  2. You should drive in the left hand lane unless overtaking or directed to by road signage
NoSnowdrop · 24/05/2024 20:22

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 19:58

But why did anybody need to overtake if I was doing the speed limit? We would both be getting off at the same place.

That’s the most obtuse answer I’ve read on here.

You were in the wrong OP and your driving is dangerous if you choose not to move over to the left when you could have done so. You’ll cause an accident if you insist on behaving like that on the road.

The outside lane should be for overtaking. You were wrong.

Tetreb · 24/05/2024 20:22

I don't think you've been clear here OP. Was there overhead signs telling you to be in that lane? Eg left lane North, right lane South and you were going South? If that's the case for that period of time the carriageway is no longer a two lane road with an overtaking lane but two separate roads to two separate places. If that's the case you should not have moved over.

If that wasn't the case, you should be in the left lane unless you were actively overtaking.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 24/05/2024 20:23

So he should have then have have moved back into the left, except he didn’t.

Ginkypig · 24/05/2024 20:24

You are being deliberately obtuse.

we all know that noone should have been overtaking you because you were doing the limit and doing so means they are breaking the law but it is also true you shouldn’t be in that lane unless you’re overtaking or are nearing your exit.

you know this already of course you just like the smugness of getting a reaction out of other drivers and now other posters.

have you thought about the possibility that maybe it’s not worth risking your life just to prove a point? There are some right weirdo’s out there, one day you might be on the end of their aggressiveness and in a speeding car that could easily become the last thing you do.

we all think arseholes who break the law shouldn’t be on the road but the fact is they are.

spannered · 24/05/2024 20:25

OP you're a very contradictory character. Do you care about the rules of the road or not? Because it seems like you care that everyone else should follow them (no speeding!), but are perfectly happy to flout them yourself (lane hogging and refusing to move over when prompted).

bozzabollix · 24/05/2024 20:25

I’m a driving instructor and have seen at least two learners fail a test for not staying left until they need to be in the right lane to overtake or coming up to a right turn at a roundabout.

Yes people shouldn’t speed, but your lane discipline is equally iffy.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 20:25

You were in the wrong OP and your driving is dangerous if you choose not to move over to the left when you could have done so. You’ll cause an accident if you insist on behaving like that on the road.

Tbf speeding is the cause of most accidents, hence why best to avoid those idiots OP.

Noshowlomo · 24/05/2024 20:26

Yes get in the right(left!) lane. It’s enraging!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/05/2024 20:26

@P3kingDuck - the Highway Code says:

”On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.”

If you did not NEED to be in the right hand lane, you should have moved back into the left hand lane. That was your responsibility. You had no responsibility to try to control the other driver’s, admittedly terrible, driving.

BlackEyesLikeADollsEyes · 24/05/2024 20:26

You are not the police so it's not your place to try and control/restrict speeders. It's your responsibility to drive legally and according to the Highway Code - which is to drive in the left hand lane unless you need to be in the right to turn or overtake.

Regardless of what the other drivers are doing, you are in the wrong and are making the roads a more dangerous place for everyone by ignoring the code and making up your own rules.

StormingNorman · 24/05/2024 20:22

Yup.

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 20:27

It’s confusing because everybody sits in that right hand lane due to where it’s going .

OP posts:
Lovetotravel123 · 24/05/2024 20:27

I totally agree with you. The speed limit is there for a reason and shouldn’t be broken just because someone wants to overtake.

Rainbowshit · 24/05/2024 19:56
