Teachers don’t want Thank You Teacher gifts

Even though schools have 5-8 weeks of term left, the shops have various TYT gifts such as mugs, coasters, keyrings etc. Teachers do not want this crap! Charity shops near me have numerous TYT mugs and crap on sale!

My friend is a teacher and parents have been told not to give gifts. Teachers don’t want 30 mugs, boxes of chocolate, alcohol (that is embarrassing if teacher doesn’t drink for various reasons) etc. Nor want flowers - don’t have enough vases at home to house 30 bunches of flowers.

Friend’s school accepts cards and hm gifts.

Think before you spend your money on your DC’s teachers.

I think that could have been put a little more kindly, but certainly teachers don’t expect gifts, although they are grateful if offered.

What is most appreciated is a word of thanks, a card or email and a mention to the head.

Bovrilla · 24/05/2024 15:32

I don't teach any more

I kept my thank you cards and notes from the kids and parents though

They kept me going and in the job longer than any mug, flowers etc ever could.

InchesOnTheDoorFrame · 24/05/2024 15:32

Don’t tell people that, I love the alcohol. 😂

FanofLeaves · 24/05/2024 15:33

I’d certainly never turn down a gift of flowers, or alcohol.

Another friend is a teacher. When she gets alcohol, it’s usually some awful cheap wine like Echo Falls strawberry or in Sainsburys do a wine called Penguin Sands.

So you are not a teacher?

MumChp · 24/05/2024 15:37

My children's teachers love theirs. But they never had or have crap. Still one in primary.

My husband is a teacher. The classes often put in an efford for one gift and often a very nice one. He doesn't complain.

Einwegflasche · 24/05/2024 15:37

I don't think teacher gifts are necessary either.
A hand drawn/written card or letter is all that's needed.

SabreIsMyFave · 24/05/2024 15:37

You don't get to speak for everyone @Graveltone One of my close friends is a teacher, and she loves it. Cute gifts from her pupils, and (often handmade) cards. She certainly doesn't get 30 bloody mugs either! And they're not going to get flowers, booze, and chocolates on top! You are exaggerating!

No harm whatsoever in getting a teacher a gift at the end of the school year. Unless the teacher has specified she wants nothing. Never have I known a teacher want nothing! Most of them love gifts!!!

TomatoSandwiches · 24/05/2024 15:38

I always give money in a card with a personal specific thanks in regard to something they've done over the year so hopefully still personal but actually useful.

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 24/05/2024 15:38

Funny, my kid's teachers seen very happy with the Space NK vouchers I usually gift.

FanofLeaves · 24/05/2024 15:38

Hey, there’s been many a night I’d have been grateful for an emergency bottle of Echo Falls 😂

NeedToStopSpendingOnCrap · 24/05/2024 15:38

Somtiemes a child may want to give a gift but parents can't afford much ?

I personally give a Costa or similar gift card or one of them ones where you can use at multiple food chains like harvester

LoreleiG · 24/05/2024 15:38

I think that surely depends on the teacher and present. But I am sure you are right and they most treasure a nice card.

Oganesson118 · 24/05/2024 15:38

Odd, I know a lot of teachers and a fair few of them love showing off their end of year “haul”!

At my daughter’s school we club together and buy them a gift voucher. I know one of the teachers uses it to treat herself to a new handbag every year!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 24/05/2024 15:38

Well, this is rude! When I taught, I certainly had no expectations that people would buy me gifts but I was always grateful for anything received. They had taken the time to buy something for me and I appreciated it.

Whitesapphire · 24/05/2024 15:39

I give gift cards, I bet they don’t mind those.

You sound like such a snob. Very sneery condescending posts. Hmm

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 24/05/2024 15:39

That's fine. They can fuck off then.

@NeedToStopSpendingOnCrap

A handmade card is very much appriciated!

BluebellGrace · 24/05/2024 15:40

I wouldn't mind the chocolate and alcohol

CelesteCunningham · 24/05/2024 15:40

It's always nice to show appreciation and I'm sure most teachers take it in the spirit intended.

However we do a class collection for the teacher, classroom assistant, secretary and caretaker which means they get something decent. Always best grateful to whoever organises it, and dreading my turn! Blush We do a card from the DC and a note from us too, as that's much more personal.

MamaGarl85 · 24/05/2024 15:40

How ungrateful are some people! The kids (and parents) want to show they are thankful for the work that has been put in over the year and gift what they can and this is how they are thought of!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 24/05/2024 15:41

I know someone who bought the teacher a hamster.

Seriously. An actual hamster.

Apparently she liked hamsters.

Sure. We all do. They’re adorable. We don’t all want one though…

Cas112 · 24/05/2024 15:41

My friend is a teacher and absolutely loves the flowers and chocolates she gets Confused

Your friend can't speak for every teacher in the world. What a weird post
