Teachers don’t want Thank You Teacher gifts

Graveltone · 24/05/2024 15:27

Even though schools have 5-8 weeks of term left, the shops have various TYT gifts such as mugs, coasters, keyrings etc. Teachers do not want this crap! Charity shops near me have numerous TYT mugs and crap on sale!

My friend is a teacher and parents have been told not to give gifts. Teachers don’t want 30 mugs, boxes of chocolate, alcohol (that is embarrassing if teacher doesn’t drink for various reasons) etc. Nor want flowers - don’t have enough vases at home to house 30 bunches of flowers.

Friend’s school accepts cards and hm gifts.

Think before you spend your money on your DC’s teachers.

OP posts:

That's fine. They can fuck off then.

No teacher has said this though @MinervaMcGonagallsCat It's the OP ASSUMING that because a 'friend' of hers (who is apparently a teacher,) gets pissed off with getting 30 mugs at the end of every school year, (allegedly!) that every single teacher in the world hates gifts! 🙄

steamedisbest · 24/05/2024 15:42

what will you be doing Op? if anything? and presuming you actually have school aged children

Solpa · 24/05/2024 15:42

DS is a teacher. He's very happy to receive gifts. His Y13s usually gets him something nice. The cards are the best though, he keeps them all. Also an email to the head for specific things is always a bonus.

NeedToStopSpendingOnCrap · 24/05/2024 15:38

Somtiemes a child may want to give a gift but parents can't afford much ?

I personally give a Costa or similar gift card or one of them ones where you can use at multiple food chains like harvester

My favourite gift one year was a packet of bourbons because the child had been so excited to tell me he had saved up and bought them for me himself. My heart melted.

Cas112 · 24/05/2024 15:41

My friend is a teacher and absolutely loves the flowers and chocolates she gets Confused

Your friend can't speak for every teacher in the world. What a weird post

Exactly this!

AND - I don't think this thread is going the way the OP wanted it to. 😆

MonsteraMama · 24/05/2024 15:44

So because you have two friends who are teachers you think you can make a post speaking for all teachers? Bold.

pambeesleyhalpert · 24/05/2024 15:44

My friends a teacher and loves the presents! Esp the wine and chocolates! Surely you can't speak for all teachers OP!?

Another friend is a teacher. When she gets alcohol, it’s usually some awful cheap wine like Echo Falls strawberry or in Sainsburys do a wine called Penguin Sands.

Summer holidays, I don’t care what it is. 🍷 🍸 🍹 🍺

🤣

How ungrateful are some people! The kids (and parents) want to show they are thankful for the work that has been put in over the year and gift what they can and this is how they are thought of!

It's really not how you're thought of though.

The OP is talking through their arse.

The teacher friends I know are extremely grateful for anything where thought has been put in...whether that be a home made card, chocolates, wine, a mug or something else.

Please ignore the OP.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 24/05/2024 15:46

What nonsense, it's lovely to be thought about after all the hard work in a school year. TA's often spend more 1-1 time with your children than the class teachers and they really love it too! Not expected but very much appreciated.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 24/05/2024 15:47

My friend used to be a teacher... excess chocolates/biscuits would be brought to share with friends

She was always grateful to have recieved them

Gymmum82 · 24/05/2024 15:49

Ours like vouchers. Whole class club together and get £200 odd voucher that they can spend on what they like. I wouldn’t say no to that if I was a teacher

InchesOnTheDoorFrame · 24/05/2024 15:49

The OP is talking through their arse.

This ⬆️

MamaGarl85 · 24/05/2024 15:49

Not sure this went the way OP thought it would!

Ungrateful snob. HTH

WitchyBits · 24/05/2024 15:50

Sorry but I don't think any teacher objects too well thought out gifts. I'm not talking key rings or home bargains/£shop mugs. When my youngest left primary we got her teacher a set of personalised plectrums, a matching capo and a guitar strap with his bands name on. And he got an engraved beer mug with a hand written/engraved message and a picture of an oak tree by my daughter ( they were the oak class). A 4 pack of beer from a micro brewery he liked. And the TAs got a hand written card and a £10voucher each. The whole teaching and kitchen staff got a tank you card and a box of crisps and a double dozen of Krispy Kreme's to share out ( this was the week before break up, around the 8-10th July) .

Every member of staff that we saw in that last week made a point to say thank, how it was unexpected but they all loved it and they really appreciated it.

By accident, I saw the teacher in his band on a local event in the paper a few months ago and he was wearing the strap my daughter got him on stage. That was 6 years ago. So he must really hate it 🤷🏼‍♀️😂.

freshgreenmintleaves · 24/05/2024 15:52

The best thing is to get together with other parents and get an M&S voucher or similar; and the kids can get together and sign a card. Let’s face it, most of these keychains and mugs are going straight to the landfill or charity shop. OP, you’re not being unreasonable.

Speak for yourself! (Or your friend rather) Personally, I like receiving chocs and wine!!

delilabell · 24/05/2024 15:54

I'm a TA ina secondary school. I'd love a gift! Also I might be missing the point but I love echo falls wine 🤣

SimpleRose · 24/05/2024 15:56

I’m confused OP why you care so much if you’re not a teacher???

when I was a teacher I liked end of term gifts personally. I give my kids teachers vouchers or money. I don’t think it’s something to get worked up about

SabreIsMyFave · 24/05/2024 15:56

MamaGarl85 · 24/05/2024 15:49

Not sure this went the way OP thought it would!

Yeah this. ^ I said this too.

Screamingabdabz · 24/05/2024 15:56

I would hate a load of teacher tat but if you’re a sentimental, grateful-for-any-old-shit type like my DH who has kept every ‘daddy’ mug since the kids were at toddler group (they’re adults now) then you’ll be different. I’m sure there is a spectrum of those in between too.

I think the problem is most people are shit at gift giving. It’s about them rather than the recipient. What does the teacher like? A lovely hand written card always, but after that be thoughtful. Just buying some home bargains crap because it has the word ‘teacher’ on it needs slightly more discernment. Would a voucher or a nice plant or quality notebook be better?

TheKeatingFive · 24/05/2024 15:57

Despite the endless guff about it on here, I expect most people are very happy with gifts of wine/chocs/flowers. Vouchers even better. Maybe not the mugs.

burnoutbabe · 24/05/2024 15:58

Surely it's just a case of avoiding the sort of. Thank you teacher stuff they sell in supermarkets?

As no one wants that sort of thing (I'd hate a worlds best accountant and even worse if I got a few of them every year)

That sort of stuff is just stuff that will end up in landfill.
