Teachers don’t want Thank You Teacher gifts

Even though schools have 5-8 weeks of term left, the shops have various TYT gifts such as mugs, coasters, keyrings etc. Teachers do not want this crap! Charity shops near me have numerous TYT mugs and crap on sale!

My friend is a teacher and parents have been told not to give gifts. Teachers don’t want 30 mugs, boxes of chocolate, alcohol (that is embarrassing if teacher doesn’t drink for various reasons) etc. Nor want flowers - don’t have enough vases at home to house 30 bunches of flowers.

Friend’s school accepts cards and hm gifts.

Think before you spend your money on your DC’s teachers.

My SIL loves the choc and booze sooooo

Apollo365 · 24/05/2024 15:58

We always do a club together voucher here

tennesseewhiskey1 · 24/05/2024 15:59

Well OP - your a bit of a rude person aren't you - are you a teacher and you got nothing?!

Another friend is a teacher. When she gets alcohol, it’s usually some awful cheap wine like Echo Falls strawberry or in Sainsburys do a wine called Penguin Sands.

On a separate note, Sainsbury's house wines are really good.

DelythBeautyQueen · 24/05/2024 15:59

I'm sure anyone would appreciate the thought that comes with a gift, whatever it is.

I'm not a teacher, but we used to get a lot of gifts when I was a nurse. Wine, chocolates and boxes of tights were always much appreciated.

Personal gifts like mugs and keyrings were less common, because gifts were usually given to the whole team rather than individuals.

One mum used to give her child's teacher a photo of her child in a mini novelty frame . Somehow I think that was going in the bin . Did she honestly think the teacher was going to put this on her mantelpiece? 😂

Agree and their Prosecco is my fave

Bluevelvetsofa · 24/05/2024 16:00

Gifts aren’t expected, but it’s lovely to receive them, whatever they are. Cards and emails are certainly appreciated, but if someone has gone to the effort of buying something for a teacher, it would be churlish to be rude about it.

My favourite things were usually the small gifts. I particularly remember a fridge magnet that had an appropriate message on it.

More likely one of those ‘teachers are only doing their job and get too much holiday so why should they get all those presents’ type of people.

MizzMarple · 24/05/2024 16:03

A friend worked at a very posh public school and used to get amazing presents like massive fortnum and mason hampers. He definitely liked the presents! (And anything he didn’t like he shared with family and friends).

countdowntonap · 24/05/2024 16:04

My favourite gift was a lottery ticket - and I won a tenner! Had lots of Prosecco and chocolate last year that kept me going through summer.

LaceyLou82 · 24/05/2024 16:05

Oh we do a collection for end of term and get vouchers! Usually easy enough!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 24/05/2024 16:05

I think most decent people in any job enjoy a small token of appreciation.

I never expect it but am delighted when it happens.

My mum is a retired teacher and she used to enjoy it especially the cards, especially the ones the kids wrote themselves.

Yeah this. ^ This thread is nothing but a teacher-bashing exercise!

Cliedi · 24/05/2024 16:05

I usually get the teachers a bottle of decent wine or fizz. Something they can easily re-gift if they don’t want to celebrate being free of my children with alcohol.

the Op isn’t a teacher

What a mean-spirited post. Hmm

WaltzingWaters · 24/05/2024 16:06

I’m not a teacher but if I were I’d certainly welcome flowers, chocolate and alcohol!

definitely wouldn’t want a million “best teacher” mugs though.

TeenLifeMum · 24/05/2024 16:06

Dd is leaving secondary and her form tutor has been her tutor since year 7. She’s been really poorly for 2 years but has struggled in part time to see her year group through to GCSEs. We’ve bought her a silver necklace with a forgetmenot flower in resin. It’s delicate and pretty and when dd gave it to her she cried.

best teacher mugs however seem daft to me.

Mamai100 · 24/05/2024 16:06

The OP is full of shit - they aren't even a bloody teacher!

My dad was a teacher, he retired last year and was always incredibly grateful for any gifts. He still uses a best teacher mug for his coffee and the chocolates and alcohol always went down a treat. He didn't get a lot of mugs either, I think that might have been the only one!

You're right - she won't be back. The thread didn't turn into a teacher-bashing thread full of haters like she planned ... It's just made her look like a proper Charlie! 😆

Ungrateful snob. HTH

Ha ha, we all have different tastes.
I wouldn't buy someone random wine, if I was going to buy wine I'd make sure it was something they liked.
As it is I didn't ever buy wine for a teacher.

steamedisbest · 24/05/2024 16:14

imagine “friend” doesn’t exist
