to start a thread about potholes?

MyNameIsFine · 24/05/2024 10:09

Another mumsnetter started a thread to complain that nobody is interested in VAT on private school fees. There are far more important things to discuss - like potholes. Unfortunately, some really inconsiderate people posted on her pothole thread about VAT on private school fees.

So here it is: a thread about potholes (not VAT on private school fees). How are the potholes round your way?

What I don't understand here is that some newer roads that see similar amounts of traffic are in a worse state then older roads. 🤔

Is the materials they use now less superior then it used to be? Does anyone know about this?

And yes the roads local to us are in a terrible state. Even the fancy private school has had to patch their driveway. But it seems they had the funds to do it, where as the road outside it still a mess.

Bad, enough said.

ToxicChristmas · 24/05/2024 10:25

Horrendous.
I cycle a lot and some of the pot holes here make it genuinely a dangerous activity. I've had to slam on my brakes before to avoid going into a crater at the side of the road. It was that or swerve into traffic. Our village hasn't got a decent road anywhere.

Mellowautumnmists · 24/05/2024 10:42

I've just claimed against my local council for a burst tyre. The roads are dreadful where I am.

Iheartmysmart · 24/05/2024 10:45

Bloody awful round here. I sometimes feel like my teeth are going to be rattled out of my head! Even the newer roads are in a dire state. Fortunately I have a tiny car so try to weave in and out of the worst ones. Must look like I’m drunk at times but I’m not sacrificing my car suspension or tyres.

MyNameIsFine · 24/05/2024 10:46

What part of the country are the roads like this? Where I am, the roads aren't bad (maybe because by a hospital?), but the council doesn't want anybody actually driving on them(!) and keeps closing them off and sending all the traffic down one way causing massive delays.

Horrendous here! We have multiple roads where you can now see large portions of the old cobbled streets below the asphalt.

I also know that some of our larger potholes have been reported frequently for months and are still not filled in.

I'm in the Cotswolds. Maybe it's worse as I'm rural (although popular tourist area). The whole road surfaces seem to be poor or broken down as well as huge pot holes. Cycling really is teeth rattling.

Blackburn, Lancashire? I'm not sure how many there are now but afaik the potholes are worse in size and number across the county since this report.
Apparently part of the problem is that we used to get our bitumen from Russia

Might as well there is a thread about everything else today.

GoofyGoldie · 24/05/2024 10:51

The potholes here are terrible, really bad.
Newcastle Upon Tyne.

blobby10 · 24/05/2024 10:52

In Leicestershire the council are quite good at sorting out potholes if you report them. Northamptonshire are the complete opposite - even if a hole is large and deep it won't 'meet their criteria for repair'! Last year I cycled from South leic to Hartpury (gloucestershire) and the varying states of the roads through the different counties was shocking.

If you see one please report it - google 'report a pothole' and it will link you to the relevant council. If you have a photo them its more likely to get repaired ditto an accurate postcode/location.

PenguinIce · 24/05/2024 10:52

Our county council announced they fix on average 500 potholes a day which seems a lot. Assume materials they use might be less durable but also think the volume of traffic has majorly increased. Also wonder if cars now are so much heavier than 20 years ago, lots more suv type cars.

In Norfolk the rural roads can be quite bad with the run-off from the fields after the heavy rain, the rain making them invisible until you hit them.

Goslingsforlife · 24/05/2024 10:55

bad. One of my DC had two bike accidents recently because of them. Luckily just a simple fall..

ZipZapZoom · 24/05/2024 10:56

Out of interest I just googled to see if I could find similar stats for our council and they filled in less than 2000 in one month...which may go some way to explaining why our roads look so shit!

ILikePistachios · 24/05/2024 10:59

Absolutely awful where I am, there's a hill that turns into a river when it rains as all the drains are full of mud, several cars a week are damaged due to the potholes, one of which is too deep to drive over so cars need to swerve into the middle of the road to get past it. The council attempted a patch job twice which just made it worse so now they're fully closing the road next month and hopefully properly fixing it

Aurle · 24/05/2024 11:01

North highlands, absolutely awful both in countryside and towns just huge chunks of the road missing and expecting it to get worse this summer with all the caravans and heavy motorhomes doing the mc500

Wooloohooloo · 24/05/2024 11:03

I live in and drive around various bits of Lancashire and they're consistently horrendous.

ComtesseDeSpair · 24/05/2024 11:10

They’ve gotten worse in my part of London in the past couple of years and I think that’s largely due to LTNs. I’m incredibly supportive of all kinds of endeavours to get cars off London’s roads, including ULEZ, and I’d even support pay-per-mile driving: but LTNs have simply pushed greater volumes of traffic onto roads which weren’t built for either the volume or the weight of the vehicles now using them. A decade ago our street was a fairly quiet B-road, and with cars parked on one side it’s only one-lane; but it’s not unusual now to see coaches and lorries fighting their way up and down it and causing gridlock because it’s one narrow lane.

midgetastic · 24/05/2024 11:17

I suspect t since LTN reduce traffic overall it would lead to less holes , albeit some in different places

Add climate change to an unwillingness to tax wealth and an unwillingness to spend for quality and an unwillingness to get out of cars and a limited rail network , if something can be done cheaper and this is what we get - a direct product of the choices society makes

sp1ders · 24/05/2024 11:46

I can't take learner ds out to practice because I'm so busy having to watch out for potholes and I can't watch the road for him at the same time. My little car wouldn't survive some of the holes round here so I need to avoid them.

ThreeDimensional · 24/05/2024 12:02

Cotswolds/Gloucestershire. They've been dreadful around here. Owners of large vehicles like SUVs should pay more road tax.

I read the news today, oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall
I'd love to turn you on
😁
