I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

I have already said this, several times, but you don't need to buy bottled water. You simply fill any bottles/containers from your tap and then replace the water every so often.

Or you rotate stocks. Go out and buy some bottled water and a few tins soon. If you haven't used them by the end of the year, put them in your normal grocery cupboard and use them up and replace with fresh items. Set a calendar entry to do this once a year at a time of your choosing.

If you're the worthy type who 'never uses tinned food' then set the date for 6 months before the use by date and donate it all to the food bank at this time.

I can barely manage to organise myself to get my weekly shopping needs in a single shop so I dread to think what random stuff we’d end up with if I attempted to stockpile.

ColdGirlWinter · 24/05/2024 09:35

This must be why I can't get my chocolate Pringles from Aldi.

Lazytiger · 24/05/2024 09:43

Well I for one am pleased. So unlike our government to be proactive. Watch Clarksons Farm. The weather was awful last year. There are two major wars and China owns most of Africa (major food producer). The government are right to do a risk analysis about an ‘any event’ disruption to food supply. We are an over populated Island and we are very vulnerable to shortages and a sudden hike in inflation.
Hopeful they will kick the net zero bollocks into the long grass and incentivise our farmers to grow food rather, than ‘plant’ solar panels, so we are less at risk if there is a supply chain issue.

I did the vaccines last time because I could tell from the very basic trial data that Oxford was dangerous and was offered Pfizer in first week as a HCP.

I took it out of terror that if I didn’t get that one then, in all likelihood I might be forced to get the Oxford.

I was allergic to Pfizer. Very odd stuff happened to me and similar to fellow colleagues.

It feels like I have been very low level ill ever since. Then I had a child and that bouncing from illness to illness continued. It been years now since I felt well. I was saying to DP yesterday I hope one day I wake up and I realise it’s been months without illness.

So that might have been pure coincidence but I wouldn’t risk it. There’s no way I will take experimental vaccines again. I would give it a few years.

BeverForget thanks for sharing, I would rather be prepared.

And the quality gets worse, sick of buying so called fresh veg to have it go off in around 2 days, tomatoes are awful, have all but given up buying them, had some green beans the other day and never got to eat any of them as they were turning black and going slimy when I got them out of the fridge. Interestingly, the Tories aren't campaigning on the myriad success of Brexit!

Yes! They've stopped putting best by dates on lots too, I've noticed.

That was to help reduce waste as there are many people who throw food away when it goes past the "Best Before". But it's a "Best" before, not a "Use by".

No conspiracy there 😊

@marie3e
They've made a website 'Prepare'

prepare.campaign.gov.uk/get-prepared-for-emergencies/

I only found out about it from someone's Twitter.

They do this in other countries…we’re at the cow’s tail…

Bjorkdidit · 24/05/2024 10:01

Best by dates are irrelevant for fruit and veg as it's the condition that's important, not how old it is. A lot of produce is stored for months before it goes on sale, so how long it remains edible is entirely down to storage conditions, not an arbitrary date.

If it looks fresh, it's fine. If it's starting to look a bit past it's best, you need to use it up, freeze it, put it in soup etc. Slightly squishy tomatoes that might not be nice in salad are absolutely fine in tomato sauce or cooked into a dish. Only when it starts looking like compost does it need throwing away, but you should really aim to use it before it gets to that state.

Because people are panic buying because of threads like this and it’s a viscous cycle?

I've just retired from nursing. I felt very uneasy about experimental vaccines too. I felt forced/guilted to have them, whilst working. I was very relieved that healthy children weren't being offered them - having a primary aged child at the time.

maybe they they know we are in for a wet summer with terrible flooding.......

fliptopbin · 24/05/2024 10:11

Does anyone actually think that this government has the brains to pull off something like this?
From what I read, most Tory MP's were taken by surprise about the election timing, so I think the preparedness website going live on the same day was a coincidence.
The food supply change is probably due to the new Brexit checks. And as for the election, ots not that much of a surprise at all, because it was always going to be this year, we just didn't know exactly when.
Basically, if there is a choice between conspiracy and incompetence, its usually incompetence.

anyolddinosaur · 24/05/2024 10:13

Would anyone who went through covid be without spare toilet rolls ever again? I'll be reviewing our food supplies as there is stuff in the cupboards but not necessarily edible without cooking. We'd survive but OH would be starving before he'd eat some of it. We already have torches and candles but more wine than water 😀

And my view on election date is that Sunak has been offered a job elsewhere........

Best before (which is what I should of said) definitely has relevance, for fruit and veg,in terms of an indication as to how long you have, to enjoy them at their best. Use by, not so much. Common sense and intended purpose for the produce, guides me regarding that.

You think Morrisons "knows" something and yet it hasn't already been leaked to the press by someone in the many layers of bureaucracy between the government and a shop-floor worker?

You don't think the more likely option is that they needed a high-vis jacket and found one lurking in a cupboard from 4 years ago?

No I don’t, honestly and it was just idle pondering 😂 when I was queuing

and tbh you don’t just find a random hi vis in a cupboard and think you’ll just bung it on when you are working the tills, I used to work in Morrisons, it was a specific brand new hi vis.

i just thought it was incongruous.

I saw two wearing the same hi vis today, I’ve just got back from there

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2024 10:19

view on election date is that Sunak has been offered a job elsewhere........

Or been invited to an Independence Day party with fireworks display stateside and wants to go and to stay over.

kerstina · 24/05/2024 10:20

I hadn’t seen this thread before now but for some reason woke up thinking about Russia and how they had poisoned Sergei Skripal on our soil . Someone capable of that won’t let our support for Ukraine go unpunished.

MPs and ministers don't have a lot to do with this. They might sign things off, but all the deciding about what is needed and what happens is what the civil service and public bodies do.

jamimmi · 24/05/2024 10:25

My main concern is medication. There is currently a shortage of insulin is some forms. This is due to import checks no issue with production. It's made in Europe. DH unable to get any for his pump but commity pharmacist managed to get a different version of the same insulin to tide him over but it's not being used as the manufacturer advised. Its a life saving drug so kind of important and 1 to2 days or less with no supply and he's dead l. I wonder if this is all about to really blow up

Rosscameasdoody · 24/05/2024 10:31

BeverForget · 23/05/2024 22:21

It isn't that stupid a concept.
This is what happened in food supply in 2020.

Post Brexit problems in the food supply chain most likely, caused by the ending of transitional arrangements. But I’m inclined to think that this is a desperate ploy from the Tories to garner votes from the more nervous among the electorate who won’t vote for the unknown if they think there’s a crisis in the offing.

You think it doesn't work for you but no one knows what might happen in the future.

What if there was threat of a nuclear attack and we were all told to stay indoors. No shops open so if you have little or no food you will most likely run out.

If there was a nuclear attack being in doors wouldn't save you.

Who doesn’t already have matches, candles and batteries at home? Aren’t they just standard things to have?

erm, those of us on very low household budgets who can barely manage one days food at a time, let alone 3 days AND luxury extras

Well, yes. He and his wife will be hard pushed to make ends meet if he’s out of work post election 😂
