I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Funnily enough I was just poking around on Reddit and came across a thread exactly like this from 5 months ago. Right down to the Times having run a "preparedness" article. That time posters were speculating a connection to something to do with hacking and Sellafield. That one passed me by entirely.

I live roughly 20 miles away from Sellafield as the crow flies, so no point prepping, we'd have around 120 seconds ☠️

BusyMummy001 · 24/05/2024 08:44

RenegotiatingT&Cs is what usually happens if your company is financially at risk -it’s what finished Woolworths. Tbh I’d forget the political stuff and take a look on line at my company’s accounts and start uploading my cv to job sites if the profit margins are going down and the debtors’ amounts are increasing year on year.

Viviennemary · 24/05/2024 08:44

They've called the election now because things are going to be worse this winter. Maybe food and fuel shortages if the Ukraine war escalates and Putin starts sabre rattling even more. Things certainly aren't going to get better under the Tories. It might for Sunak and his mega rich family. Their wealth is in the hundreds of millions and growing all the time. Who even needs that much money.

I work in retail and there's strikes in distribution that are impacting our deliveries so to bypass this they are sending bigger orders out. I don't know if it will affect all supermarkets though but it's been a nightmare this week for us.

This sounds like a really sensible reason why the supermarkets would be ordering in bigger deliveries then. Hopefully this is what is causing it. Thanks for posting this.

The election has been called on 4th July, because the tories don’t want to waste their summer preparing for an election they know they will lose. Might as well call it now, lose their seats and get the summer off…

Also, if they string it out and make voters wait longer to bin them off, they will lose by a greater margin as resentment of the tory shit show builds.

DyslexicPoster · 24/05/2024 08:46

Whippetlovely · 24/05/2024 07:29

They definitely will not. Most people are cross about how covid was dealt with and have zero trust in the government and pharmaceutical companies now. Many of us think the people still wearing masks after we now know they are completely ineffective are completely brainwashed. There is no hope for some people but many millions thankful have woken up.

Edited

But they might if the next pandemic is more lethal. If covid 2 came along with a death rate of 2% I'd think twice.

If bird flu came out with a death rate of say for random 25% I'd be shitting myself into compliance. Not all viruses are equal.

Perhaps they're anticipating stockpiling behaviour because of the current government's fear-mongering in the press this week. Which presumably is part of their campaign plan. I.e. frighten everyone into voting for "consistency".

Exactly this!!!

There are new Brexit supply checks and charges so food is going to get more expensive and the supply chain is less resilient. That's my guess anyway. I think Sunak called the election because of the letters of no-confidence in his leadership Tory MPs had started submitting.

And the quality gets worse, sick of buying so called fresh veg to have it go off in around 2 days, tomatoes are awful, have all but given up buying them, had some green beans the other day and never got to eat any of them as they were turning black and going slimy when I got them out of the fridge. Interestingly, the Tories aren't campaigning on the myriad success of Brexit!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 24/05/2024 08:51

Just more brexit dividends as the border checks we voted for are finally brought in (the Tories have been delaying them for YEARS to avoid the fallout of what they caused. Prices will inevitably go up at the checkout as a result.

I’m actually thinking about WTH are we supposed to do about the vegetable crisis in autumn. No one seems to be talking about it though. The crops have all been fucked and there will be nothing OR what there is will be super expensive

Agree, it is going to be bad by all accounts, I have read that not much can be planted due to the gound being water-logged after the endless rain in April. When there will be good news? Everything seems to be endlessly grim

Are we going to get taken over by serpents do you think? Shock

This is a certainty

ILikePistachios · 24/05/2024 08:56

Given what's happening in Lithuania, Russia's recent announcements, Iran's PM being assassinated, recent airport passport issues, train network outages and the election being announced so soon, it's not insane to be suspicious of perhaps a large scale cyber attack or something that brings down any of our vital infrastructure. However given how high the risk of that happening is, I imagine something would have been put into place to minimise the effects and chaos it would bring.

Myself and a couple of friends have noticed people panic buying water, batteries and tinned food though so people are clearly twitchy, the government prepare campaign and recent TV/newspaper stories on being prepared isn't helping

This, I suspect it's an absolutely shitty election campaign to frighten voters into "choosing" the status quo.

blackheartsgirl · 24/05/2024 08:58

Something i did notice in my local Morrisons last week, a worker with a brand new hi vis with the writing social distancing ambassador (or something like that) on the back. That was new. It did make ponder I must admit

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/05/2024 08:58

Nothing good is round the corner that’s for sure. I’m assuming a huge scale war in Europe that will bankrupt us all further.

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2024 09:01

In 2020 we'd been reading increasingly alarming stuff about the virus from the start of January, initially in China, then elsewhere, and governments in countries all over the planet were making statements.

This one seems to be UK only - certainly I don't think Ireland would be sticking its neck out over Palestine if the politicians thought a solar flare or a hostile state was going to damage the infrastructure in the next week or two.

So it's probably about a UK-only risk factor, and Brexit seems the likeliest.

But really, having a week's worth of essentials in the house is always a good idea, as is having savings that will carry you through a couple of months if necessary.

Mrsdyna · 24/05/2024 09:04

The UK has been the canary down the mine for where I live, so I'm hoping it's nothing.

DeanElderberry · 24/05/2024 09:07

Gosh, for us it's increasingly seemed a bit 'oh do keep up, UK' - particularly around Covid, but evidently about normal emergency preparedness as well.

You think Morrisons "knows" something and yet it hasn't already been leaked to the press by someone in the many layers of bureaucracy between the government and a shop-floor worker?

You don't think the more likely option is that they needed a high-vis jacket and found one lurking in a cupboard from 4 years ago?

This, I suspect it's an absolutely shitty election campaign to frighten voters into "choosing" the status quo.

It's absolutely their only hope of winning. Scaring us into thinking Labour will be worse. They might be but I'm taking the chance.

Countrylife2002 · 24/05/2024 07:21

Also bottled water doesn’t last that long even unopened so that’s a total waste of money to buy ahead!

I have already said this, several times, but you don't need to buy bottled water. You simply fill any bottles/containers from your tap and then replace the water every so often.

Grammarnut · 24/05/2024 09:17

More like he wants to get away from dealing with the infected blood scandal, the Post Office scandal and the reports on results of cutting midwife funding.

GiganticArkReadywithHottub · 24/05/2024 09:18

I remember these threads on covid where people would blast the OP saying 'it's just like bird flu, swine flu' etc, it'll turn out to be nothing. So now I think a bit of pondering is a good thing.

Bringbackthebeaver · 24/05/2024 08:26

😐I was just explaining why it doesn't work for everyone because you said you don't understand why some people don't do it. It doesn't work for us for the reasons I outlined, so we don't do it.

You think it doesn't work for you but no one knows what might happen in the future.

What if there was threat of a nuclear attack and we were all told to stay indoors. No shops open so if you have little or no food you will most likely run out.

Whippetlovely · 24/05/2024 09:27

MsCheeryble · 24/05/2024 07:41

What research is there that says "Most people" feel this way? If we have zero trust in pharmaceutical companies, how come the vast majority of us got vaccinated, and how come the death and serious illness rate fell so quickly once vaccines came along? How do you account for the fact that we are accepting prescriptions for products made by pharmaceutical companies ever day? If masks are "completely ineffective", how do you account for the fact that HCPs wear them?

Because we were gullible! We know it is ineffective doesn’t stop getting it or spreading it. HIV vaccines scandle?? Pharmaceutical companies are only interested in making money for shareholders not getting people better. That would not be the best business model. You get a tablet then four others to deal with the side effects of that. The stats were made up if you died of something else but had covid it was a covid death. So many lies but I don’t need to convert you I am not a Mormon. Think what you want. I am stating a fact that most people won’t listen next time. You only need to have conversations about it to know this. Everybody from people at the running club, my 70 year old mother, work colleagues, school gates. Most people are sceptical whether you like it or not. This is not tin foil hat , it’s common sense people will question things more if it were to happen again. That’s not being stupid it’s sensible. I’ll wait for the name calling and gas lighting as we aren’t allowed to have an opinion other than yours. Zzzzzz
