I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

Yes this. It was reported in The Times this week too - recommending that everyone should hold 4 days supply to improve the country's resilience, using an example of a sulphur cloud from an Icelandic volcano meaning everybody would have to stay indoors for 4 days

Nuclear or biological warfare then?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 23/05/2024 22:59

Funny how the narrative changes and so quickly sometimes. One minute you're a nutter if you've got a shed full of beans and bog roll, the next it's just common sense and we should have been doing it for years just like all our European neighbours.

JaneJeffer · 23/05/2024 23:00

Well if you've got a shed full of beans you're going to need all that bog roll innit

Onionskins78 · 23/05/2024 23:00

I don’t want to scaremonger but I did hear something on the international news about some form of bird flu jumping in to humans for the first time. The person just got conjunctivitis and recovered though!

Don’t quote me on this please because I have no expert knowledge whatsoever.

Hopefully another Mumsnetter will be along soon with better info!

But this is what I have Googled from the US CDC:

[1] first human case of A(H5N1) bird flu in the United States linked to an outbreak in dairy cows was also the first likely case of human infection with A(H5N1) from a cow globally. This was reported on April 1, 2024. The person reported eye redness as their only symptom, consistent with conjunctivitis, and recovered.

We have always had a stock of stuff, anything could happen anytime, it's a shame people need to have the government tell them this and they can't use their own common sense

marie3e · 23/05/2024 23:01

Well it could happen, war here. Maybe it's just routine in the circumstances.

chosenone · 23/05/2024 23:01

It’s not linked to the contaminated water situation in Devon is it? Could water supplies be targeted?

MistressoftheDarkSide · 23/05/2024 23:03

RainbowsMoonbeams · 23/05/2024 22:56

But 2020 was scaremongering nonsense!

Well, that's a can of worms indeed.

What I'm getting at us that on MN there were threads about what might be incoming as Covid spread in January and February which were scoffed at as scaremongering then we did actually have lockdowns etc. So I'm a little less sceptical because I never imagined I'd see such administrative chaos in my lifetime. Fool me once and all that.

I broadly agree. I'm just musing.

I have just found more info here on the BBC but whether it’s a cause for concern or not I have no clue!

A 70-year-old system could help us prepare a bird flu vaccine for humans

The widespread presence of bird flu in US cattle and milk has vaccine scientists on high alert.

It's probably down to the secondary petri dish conditions of people using those sardine cans (aeroplanes) to go on holiday. Covid is rife, cases of measles, whooping cough and TB are on the rise. All this means factories will have less workers, truckers won't be driving etc etc.

Then you have the French blocking the ports or air traffic control on strike every summer as they try to convince their government of something so nothing will be coming across from Europe. Pensions, farmers, petrol...

So no conspiracies - just another usual shit summer for us all - and that's before we moan about the non stop rain Blush

Bird flu is jumping the species barrier in US cattle so everyone needs to eyeball that. But its still a posabilty it won't jump to human to human transmission. But that being said we are ever increasingly getting closer to next global pandemic and that's nothing new.

The general election was due anyway, save a few months whatever but it was looming.

I'm not worried about anything secret or new. I'm.worried ( very low level) on what I can easily read on the bbc tbh. Worrying shit 360 rubbed in your face.

marie3e · 23/05/2024 23:13

I don't know what I would do with my cats

Pollipops1 · 23/05/2024 23:15

If war is coming what good is some tins of beans & tuna?

Surely it’s more a case of further water contamination etc & the gov needing more time to organise themselves.

Babyshambles90 · 23/05/2024 23:15

Sadly there are a few possibilities! Biological or nuclear attack, water supply contamination, food shortages, H5N1 flu, unusual covid variant. H5N1 is becoming a growing concern as more red flag situations occur. Increasing numbers of dairy herds in the US are now affected, at least 2 farm workers diagnosed, and sporadic cases like the kid returning from India to Australia and being diagnosed with H5N1 with no obvious exposure to animals or sick people, which suggests wider levels circulating undetected. It’s really been a case of when not if for a while but the risk of an H5N1 pandemic is concerning, and after covid people are unlikely to be accepting of masking, lockdowns or other methods of infection control which makes the situation far more challenging.

This is very true. I'm not about to panic, but nor am I going to sneer at the possibility of something being prepared for. Many of us did that in 2020. Everything changed forever in the course of a few short months. Covid has already proven that life can change almost overnight. How many of us were in some kind of denial right up until the first day of lockdown?

It's pretty obvious from what's been said in recent days that the government wants the UK to have more food stockpiles. While it may be something of a leap (at least right now) to go from that to WW3, it does make me think they're anticipating a potential supply chain issue and preparing accordingly.

If you don't factor in that we are only now actually implementing Brexit on the ports

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 23/05/2024 23:21

After the bacteria in the water situation in Devon I'd say it's
Pretty Sensible

However
Only In Mumsnet have I seen this mentioned

Delawear · 23/05/2024 23:23

It’s food supplies, and could be just this, but if the food supply is not reliable, the population is more vulnerable to whatever else may happen.

Brexit regulations affecting food imports and contributing to continued labour shortages, meaning crops don’t get picked, carcasses don’t get processed…, climate change affecting growing conditions, farmers unable to make enough of a living so retiring or switching careers.

Ive seen people claim they what was coming the previous year which im definitely sceptical about…

MistressoftheDarkSide · 23/05/2024 23:23

@songaboutjam

Exactly this. I'm of the same mindset. I don't like surprises so I keep half an eye on things in the news and on various sites. Nine times out of ten everything settles down and we move onto the next thing. It's continuous rumbling in particular directions that holds my attention and the escalating general instability in the UK and worldwide politics is giving me a hinky feeling.

Might lay in some extra cat food.

Pollipops1 · 23/05/2024 23:26

I just hope there is not a load of panic buying.

For sure, if anything comes out of recent events, let’s hope that the new government after July 4th has the sense to implement a raft of measures to protect UK farmers and their products and land.

PurplePositivity · 23/05/2024 23:36

DH was bollocking on about this tonight when we did the food shop. Wanting to get extra toilet rolls, water and tinned food. I told him to stop being daft but get me a couple more bottles of wine Grin

He was then muttering about finding space to start stock piling, I suffer with anxiety and don't listen to the news anymore, I zoned out from him too, god love him.
