I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

We don't really take Russia seriously but they do threaten to bomb us all the time. It will depend on how much we help bomb them or how far Russia thinks we can go. I never thought it would go this far but it may as well be Britain attacking Russia here and there

Notawool · 23/05/2024 22:16

The election has been called on 4th July, because the tories don’t want to waste their summer preparing for an election they know they will lose. Might as well call it now, lose their seats and get the summer off…

This!

Toptotoe · 24/05/2024 06:58

There were a few things on twitter yesterday saying there was a reason that would be revealed. One saying we are already at war with Russia - Andrew Bigden (?) MP was saying we’ve been lobbing bombs at Russia - it’s just not been declared. Apparently Rishi says he does not want to be a war time prime minister but he was being forced into it by his generals. Didn’t pay much heed to it but reading OPs post made me think of it

Imminent alien invasion

Twiglets1 · 24/05/2024 07:03

Some people aren’t happy unless we’re all doomed 🙄

LaurieFairyCake · 24/05/2024 07:10

There's masses of self interest in panic buying as the Tories have a lot of shares in supermarkets and in the production

Plus there's also the agenda to push of "we're going to war you can't trust Labour to not get in bed with the Russians'

Absolute bollocks obviously

scalt · 24/05/2024 07:14

I said it on another thread, there must be a reason the government issued "preppers' guidance" very recently; we're distracted by the election, but they need to be able to say "we did tell you to do your prepping". Also, as we were nudged, nudged and nudged again during the plandemic (sorry, pandemic, I can't spell), the government is probably checking that the "nudge" unit still works, and if people still respond to it; or if they are now thinking "it's just the government crying wolf again".

There was "panic buying" of a certain valuable commodity about two and a half years ago, because a certain big company said something silly that made people panic, and buy it in massive quantities. Most people have probably forgotten all about it, but I haven't. (I'm not going to say what it was, in case I cause another panic!) That panic had the government's fingerprints all over it, as far as I'm concerned.

Sweden99 · 24/05/2024 07:16

Having the preparation warnings and oddly timed election might indicate something particular to the UK.
Brexit is coming up with new trade barriers. It seems most likely if it is anything.
Sweden is getting a similar message, but they have Russia next door upto all sorts (cyber attacks etc).

VestibuleVirgin · 24/05/2024 07:16

We're all doomed. Doomed, I tell ye....

Countrylife2002 · 24/05/2024 07:19

Honestly I think this is just politics the Govt signalling this as their main election message will be Tories are best for security (spoiler alert, as if). It’s just electioneering. They’ve presumably suggested this to supermarkets who have changed their supply plans.

Countrylife2002 · 24/05/2024 07:21

Also bottled water doesn’t last that long even unopened so that’s a total waste of money to buy ahead!

Horsemother · 24/05/2024 07:25

I hate this bloody scaremongering, it always causes panic buying.

I don't agree actually that people will be less accepting of infection control measures than they were in 2020. I was amazed at how much people accepted changes in 2020, and were willing to try and do their bit to get through the crisis. There are still a few people round here who wear masks when out shopping now; I think many people would try and do the responsible thing/ follow Government advice if we had another pandemic.

They definitely will not. Most people are cross about how covid was dealt with and have zero trust in the government and pharmaceutical companies now. Many of us think the people still wearing masks after we now know they are completely ineffective are completely brainwashed. There is no hope for some people but many millions thankful have woken up.

Of course they would

My sister worked in ICU, which was filled up during the waves with people dying. Once the vaccine came along, the only people in there were unvaccinated.
My close friend all the way over in North Carolina had the same experience.
Both have retired from ICU since.

Much of what you wrote is untrue.
I am sorry that Covid hurt your feelings by making you feel unimportant. But you should refrain from posting poison.

tuvamoodyson · 24/05/2024 07:36

I’ve kept my cupboards stocked up for 40 years! Always have toilet rolls/toiletries etc. I don’t hoard stuff, but I always have ‘extra’ I’d definitely manage for 3 weeks days!

Fallenangelofthenorth · 23/05/2024 22:30

Well my partner works in print and I knew about the social distancing stickers the supermarkets were ordering waaay before they stuck them on the floor. Honestly, where do people thinks they appeared from?

YANBU @BeverForget. Supermarkets are not going to order double for no reason. Is this all supermarkets? Or one in particular?

We knew Covid existed 3-4 months before lockdown, and by late January it was virtually inevitable it was coming here unless we closed the borders. It doesn't take long to print stickers and notices. So what do you or OP suggest is out there that we don't know about? I take it your partner hasn't been doing any unusual printing lately?

Sweden99 · 24/05/2024 07:37

@MsCheeryble, we also know brexit border checks are coming.

I agree, something feels odd, felt it all week.

😂

Fulshaw · 24/05/2024 07:40

Isn’t it because there’s been so much rain the wheat crops are expected to be rubbish this year or something?

AgnesX · 24/05/2024 07:40

Business continuity and risk. Standard stuff. The taxing of products coming from Europe might have some bearing on it but I don't think it's anything worth worrying about.

Conspiracy theorists crack on.

baroqueandblue · 24/05/2024 07:41

TabithaTimeTurner · 24/05/2024 00:22

This is exactly what's happening. The gov has obvs told the supermarkets they were going to make their 3 day preparation plan notification yesterday. Rishi has then made his general election speech on the same day hoping everyone will think omg something’s afoot we’d better vote for the conservatives to keep the status quo we can’t have anymore turmoil if something big is coming.
Keeping you frightened makes you easier to control.

Completely plausible. Tories got wind of Starmer's intention to use the word 'change' to carry his election campaign and are now trying to psych us all out. They're cynically manipulating certain sections of the public into a panic mindset so that they conclude it's better to stick with the abusive, neglectful devil they know 🙄 Gaslighting 101.

Ironically, as far as many of Sunak's MPs are now concerned, it was only when they heard Starmer suddenly touting 'Change!' that they realised Sunak had actually called a General Election...

TheMildManneredMilitant · 24/05/2024 07:41

I think many are reading far too much into a Gov Comms campaign that was probably instigated as a part of a general preparedness/resilience plan. I'd imagine after the chaos of COVID it's something that's being taken more seriously.

Given the winter is usually the worst time for some of the more predictable issues like bad weather/flood/power cuts/illness, you'd want to get people thinking about it well in advance.

What research is there that says "Most people" feel this way? If we have zero trust in pharmaceutical companies, how come the vast majority of us got vaccinated, and how come the death and serious illness rate fell so quickly once vaccines came along? How do you account for the fact that we are accepting prescriptions for products made by pharmaceutical companies ever day? If masks are "completely ineffective", how do you account for the fact that HCPs wear them?

MsCheeryble · 24/05/2024 07:43

Sweden99 · 24/05/2024 07:37

@MsCheeryble, we also know brexit border checks are coming.

Well, exactly. Which accounts for what the supermarkets are doing. Not a mysterious dreadful unknown coming down the line.
