I work in food supply chain.
Four of the 'big' grocery retailers have just asked to renegotiate at least four weeks min supply, as opposed to two.
This happened in Feb 2020 as well.
Lots of rhetoric about being on a war footing, from politicos.
And then Sunak essentially jumping ship yesterday, as though he knows there is a crisis on the horizon that he wants no part of.
There is no way that the Tories have a prayer in a July election.
So what do they know that they aren't telling us?

MP Andrew Bridgen

is not particularly credible.

MyRamone · 24/05/2024 11:27

Exactly. Andrew Bridgen is a bonkers conspiracy theorist who was found guilty of lying under oath and getting police to spuriously investigate his own brother. I'm therefore happy to believe the absolute opposite of what he says.

OokBook · 24/05/2024 11:27

YANBU OP. There have been news articles for months with high up military folk talking about wanting to reintroduce conscription to prepare for war with Russia. Between that and the genocide in Palestine that the Tories and Labour both support, WW3 seems fairly likely to be on the horizon. I'm anxious AF.

In 2020 we'd been reading increasingly alarming stuff about the virus from the start of January, initially in China, then elsewhere, and governments in countries all over the planet were making statements.

This one seems to be UK only - certainly I don't think Ireland would be sticking its neck out over Palestine if the politicians thought a solar flare or a hostile state was going to damage the infrastructure in the next week or two.

So it's probably about a UK-only risk factor, and Brexit seems the likeliest.

But really, having a week's worth of essentials in the house is always a good idea, as is having savings that will carry you through a couple of months if necessary.

I mean - you're right. But this much in savings is for some people unreachable atm.

The election has been called for the summer because the tories want to avoid another shit winter of overwhelmed nhs, unaffordable bills, rise in homelessness being reported as kids with “no home for Christmas”, and flooding etc. All those things will still be true in the summer but less visible, less obviously tragic and less severe - it’s not so bad if you can’t afford to hear your home in summer. People are generally more enthusiastic in summer, ans they aren’t gearing up to pay their tax bill in Jan if they are self employed.

Added to that, I checked the election timing in relation to the Euros. They will happen just before the first play offs. England is favourite so should definitely make it out of group so there’ll be a wave of patriotism and positivity flowing and a football-dominated news cycle masking the brexit food shortages and war news.

it’s cynical as fuck but that’s politics and the tories for you.

This 👍

DrBlackbird · 24/05/2024 11:29

It might be something to do with Oliver Dowden's website, recommending every household should have at least 3 weeks' supply of non- perishable food, bottled water, torches etc as emergency backup for any future pandemics/floods/other disasters. I heard about it yesterday but then it was overshadowed rather by Rishi in the Rain.

I’m going to watch the walking dead for tips order the wine and loo roll in🤣

I haven’t watched Rishi emulating Rhianna yet, I must get on that. Can’t wait for that dick to get voted out. A fresh new bunch of dicks awaits.

@OokBook well so am I now lol. steps away from the internet

Everyone has some space somewhere. Top of wardrobe, loft, behind sofa etc etc etc.

Also if you buy 1 extra item when you shop it doesn't cost much. You can get a bag of pasta for under £1.

Some people struggle to feed themselves for a month as it is, having extra isn't always possible for everyone.

Given what's happening in Lithuania, Russia's recent announcements, Iran's PM being assassinated, recent airport passport issues, train network outages and the election being announced so soon, it's not insane to be suspicious of perhaps a large scale cyber attack or something that brings down any of our vital infrastructure. However given how high the risk of that happening is, I imagine something would have been put into place to minimise the effects and chaos it would bring.

Myself and a couple of friends have noticed people panic buying water, batteries and tinned food though so people are clearly twitchy, the government prepare campaign and recent TV/newspaper stories on being prepared isn't helping

Nothing happened in Lithuania, I'm from there.

Yes, there seems to be a policy in the UK at the moment of keeping a lot of people in really dire poverty. I hope your next government starts to change that.

Mummyofbananas · 24/05/2024 11:46

I've been watching bird flu updates for a while and it's starting to look at bit scary.
War with russia is also starting to look like a distinct possibility.

RamblingEclectic · 24/05/2024 11:49

The UK government and local areas have had prepare websites with guidance for the public and emergency plans for years now.

I looks like the UK one has had a bit of a revamp, but it's not new.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 23/05/2024 22:32

OP I'm kind of with you. It does feel like we're being primed for something. But what? Could be any number of things affecting global supply chains / infrastructures. Cyber disruption? Suppose all we can do is hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Knock off the mystery paranoia. You're not in on some secret, you just make yourself sound ignorant.

I’m old enough to remember the ‘protect and survive’ advice that advocated just that. Stock up your store cupboards, paint your windows white and if the alert sounds huddle up under the nearest table for protection and kiss your arse goodbye.

Are you sure? Pretty sure Protect and Survive films and booklets were never broadcast / published.

Not for everyone but for many who don't, for whatever reason, see the need to

JennieTheZebra · 24/05/2024 12:01

@40weeksmummy I think they meant Lithuanian border guards being given ‘heavy weapons’ or maybe the issues with the maritime border with Russia-or even the new Rheinmetall plant. I mean, Lithuania hasn’t exactly been quiet on the Ukraine war-and nor should they be, but it does stoke the tension iyswim.

Sorry for this, but something's up.

We're being primed for a possible war from Russia. I do think it's coming soon.

Igotjelly · 24/05/2024 12:21

TheNoonBell · 24/05/2024 11:23

MP Andrew Bridgen thinks the war will be announced in July/August and that Rishi doesn't want to be a wartime PM. He also says we are already at war, we just haven't been told yet.
