To think that those private school parents banging on about their fees

Thegreatergoodgerald · 23/05/2024 11:23

Seriously have misjudged how little anyone else gives a stuff??? NHS, social care, state education, public transport, bloody potholes everywhere - that’s what matters to everyone I know.
Not whether or not VAT is added to a business.

YANBU - it’s hardly the end of the world if Clemmie or Charles end up going to a state school. We have bigger things to worry about in the U.K. right now

YABU - of course everyone cares private school parents might have to pay more

Nor is it true that the teachers will want to work in the state sector. They might just leave teaching. Many will. All teaching is stressful, why up your stress with bigger classes and potentially worse behaviour?

Because you have a mortgage to pay and a family to feed, perhaps? After all most people work for money.

Beansticks · 23/05/2024 20:32

twistyizzy · 23/05/2024 20:29

Again please can you show me evidence of "hardly any" families have got that to spare.
It has been done to death ie savings/1 parent working purely to pay for fees etc etc

The average household income is £35k before taxes. £15k from that for one child leaves next to nothing to pay rocketing rent/ mortgages, food, bills etc.

twistyizzy · 23/05/2024 20:32

Beansticks · 23/05/2024 20:28

No it’s the same posters doing the same incorrect scaremongering. Many many posts illustrating why. And look at the vote scores.

"Incorrect" 😆. Some of us have done a lot of research in order to fully understand the policy. None of it stacks up once you drill down into the detail. But it is the Brexit NHS bus ie promising a populist strapline with no chance of being delivered.

SofaThrow · 23/05/2024 20:32

sheoaouhra · 23/05/2024 20:24

lots of private school teachers will work in state schools, lots of teachers switch between the tow regularly throughout their career, lots of state schools have better pay and conditions than private schools. Some might not, but many will

Sorry but no. Anyone who thinks that private school teachers are going to be clamouring to work in a state school - even if they are suddenly out of a job thanks to Sir Kier - are in could cuckoo land. Not happening.

Vango · 23/05/2024 20:33

I'm honestly baffled that anyone believes that the proposed policy is going to benefit the state sector in any way. It reminds me of the argument that a vote in favour of Brexit would result in a £350m per week "funding bonanza" for the NHS. Are things any better 8 years on?

Polishedshoesalways · 23/05/2024 20:33

I think we are about to see an enormous capital flight that will have long reaching consequences for generations.

Beansticks · 23/05/2024 20:33

Polishedshoesalways · 23/05/2024 20:30

Small number??? Are you actually kidding?

No not kidding it will be a tiny number because a tiny percentage are privately educated and most will stay.

But average doesn't = most. It is the median taken from all salaries from the highest to lowest. It isn't the most frequently occurring salary

Over 500, 000 kids are privately educated.

It will benefit state schools by increasing the pool of applicants for jobs - currently we have zero applicants for some vacancies!

What makes you think that a private school teacher would move to a state school? You are pretty presumptuous and delusional. I don’t know where to begin. They might move to the “better” state schools if they lost their private school job but the failing schools will need to work very hard to attract good teachers. Current State school teachers are leaving the profession in droves because of the current state of the schools and you think a private school teacher will scoop up those jobs?! You will find that both state and private teachers want one thing in common which is good working conditions and to feel supported with TAs EHCPs etc and that the school gets decent funding for buying the basics etc. teachers are being social workers, police, teachers, a motherly or father figure, a support and someone who feeds( because some turn up hungry at school) and sometimes washes the students clothes. It shouldn’t be like this.
The failure of state school at the moment is a reflection of a wider issue and the poor state of the country in every single aspect. It’s going to take years to fix.

no, completely normal - I and many of my colleagues have worked in private in the past, but prefer state - better pay and conditions, as I said. Not that I wouldn't consider private again if the right job came up. Most teachers would consider either, when job hunting

Oh you mean you fee paying parents desperate to save your private education. You can do an internet search to back up anything.

crumblingschools · 23/05/2024 20:36

@BIossomtoes many teachers are already leaving the profession, and I assume many of them have mortgages too

They might become tutors to make up the educational shortfall however…. Given the massive class sizes that are virtually guaranteed.

It’s also going to cost the tax payer an extra £65 million to fund all the extra school places now the parents won’t be paying fees any longer - and it will be down to you to pay.

Beansticks · 23/05/2024 20:18

Schools aren’t failing. Children are under huge pressures( SM, screen addiction, col, broken mental health support, dire curriculum the Tories introduced , SEN underfunding….)which the Tories have done zilch about.

Labours idea of a MH professional in every school is a good start.

But how does penalising private schools help with any of that?

the private school system is taking care of itself. People should just leave it the fuck alone. Don’t open a can of worms/set up some sort of unpredictable situation that could worsen what’s going on elsewhere.

SpudleyLass · 23/05/2024 20:36

My DD is at an independent specialist school because there were no spaces in state specialist settings.

I know Starmer has claimed that kids with EHCPs wont be affected but I worry Labour will do an about face on this.

I fought for two years for her to have an appropriate setting and I don't want it be taken away again so soon.

This policy is enough to prevent me from voting Labour, sorry. That said, I'm not voting Tory either. I'm not voting at all.

Willyoujustbequiet · 23/05/2024 20:36

Whoswhoof · 23/05/2024 20:24

Disagree. Reality of whose life? What majority?

the majority of people aren’t struggling at all with CoL.

More than MOST households have to live on? what an utterly ridiculous statement.

Seriously?

The average cost of fees is £17k ( not boarding)
Average household income is £35k (ONS)

I said the fees for 3 children would be more than what most households have to live on. 3 x £17k is actually considerably more than most have to live on.

Now who is being utterly ridiculous.

crumblingschools · 23/05/2024 20:37

@sheoaouhra what better conditions?

Beansticks · 23/05/2024 20:37

twistyizzy · 23/05/2024 20:34

Over 500, 000 kids are privately educated.

Most of which will stay. 5 or 10% of 500,000 is a drop in the ocean across the uk.

No, talking to economists, speaking to IFS and ASI, speaking to MPs snd journalists etc.
Getting views from lawyers and education experts.

I know it’s a vote winner that’s why we have it as a policy. It’s populist rather than sensible.

So it doesn’t mean the impact will be as people expect. It may well be as pp say, people move and best state gets more competition and house prices rise

It’s hard to predict behaviour but I really do think this is GE fodder and not much more. Education wont be improved which is a pity. We use state btw so it’s not the money

crumblingschools · 23/05/2024 20:38

Where are the mental health experts coming from?

Private education should absolutely not be left alone. More needs to be done to sort the huge inequalities it causes.
