To feel the weather is actually now making me a terrible parent

Another day pouring with rain and resorting to tv or other long winded draining activities in the house. I’m so fed up. So miserable. It’s May now! I know complaining about it doesn’t make it better but I’ve just had enough. No fresh air again, just like the first 4 months of the year. It’s completely pouring down

Get them out in the rain! Yeah it's shit though

BaiIey · 22/05/2024 07:56

You don't need to stay in because its raining. What makes you think you need to stay in?

Sunnysummer24 · 22/05/2024 07:57

May is often unpredictable.

But yes, half term next week is looking like it’s going to be harder work and more expensive. I was hoping for lots of park and NT visits.

HappiestSleeping · 22/05/2024 07:58

No such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.

It has been shit this year though. Dog has been muddy more than not.

TorturedPoets · 22/05/2024 07:58

No way would I stay in the house all day with young children whatever the weather.

BiddyPop · 22/05/2024 07:58

Buy wellies and waterproofs, and get them out in the weather.

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 22/05/2024 08:00

Swimming, bowling, cinema? Waterproofs on and a short trip to the playground, take towels and get bundles up in the car afterwards, muddy puddle walk.donr get me wrong though I hate going out in the rain, I just hate sitting in more!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 22/05/2024 08:00

I got fed up of the rain and booked a week in Mallorca. Here right now, it's great!

Yanbu op.
But you do need to improvise you can't just say rain = TV.
Have they got wet suits? Have you got waterproofs?

VolvoFan · 22/05/2024 08:05

One of the most satisfying things in the world as a kid was to jump into puddles and stamp in them. The more splash the better. Get your kids into waterproofs and wellies and have them stamp the puddles. They'll love it.

Bjorkdidit · 22/05/2024 08:13

Go to the woods as there will be shelter from the worst of the rain.

Or swimming, library, whatever.

WhatNoRaisins · 22/05/2024 08:15

Come on OP, let the rain kiss you.

In all seriousness I relate. I hate taking them out in the rain but I hate staying in with them. It's a complete myth that all kids love the rain and mud.

I'm definitely a better parent when we can get to the park and I'm trying not to think about how much money we'll be spending this half term to keep them off screens.

Bringbackthebeaver · 22/05/2024 08:18

Just put your raincoats and boots on and go outside. It's not that bad.

Laiste · 22/05/2024 08:21

How old are the kids?

Once they get to 8, 9, 10 splashing in puddles doesn't really cut it.

Most of the alternatives cost money even if it seems a small amount it adds up and you have to make hard decisions.

YANBU OP. Sick of this effing weather.
PRAYING for a bit of decent weather when we go away this year. Caravan UK.

@BaiIey it’s not just a bit of rain. It’s torrential with a bit of high wind thrown in.

I am so fed up with it. Yes you can dress
For it but it's not fun.

TorturedPoets · 22/05/2024 08:31

Soft play for a couple of hours? Tires everybody out and you can sit with a coffee.

Surprised at these answers, who wants to take a small child out in torrential rain,Confused

Sorry but I don't believe that it is non stop heavy rain all day every day for days on end to the extent you can't possibly go out at all.

It's only 8am. Just wait for it to ease up a bit and then head out.

They don’t melt 😄

Sleepismyfavourite · 22/05/2024 08:34

Aren’t yesterday & today school days though?
The rain has been relentless though I agree. DD is autistic & absolutely hates the rain & wind- I think it’s partly a sensory thing. We really struggle to get her out when it’s like this. It looks a bit better here later in the week.

You have my genuine sympathy - I used to feel like this, too.

Something that worked for me on days like this that I didn't find draining: empty a cheap box of cereal in a flattish plastic box, with some diggers or animals. It kept DC busy for about an hour and if they ate it, no problem. Any leftovers went back in the box for the next wet day!

Hang in there. Good luck.

Lol at being able to ‘sit with a coffee’ with a 16 month old at soft play 😂

Everyone getting high and mighty saying it’s only rain, wear appropriate clothing etc- yeah, we know. We’ve been doing it on and off for months. There’s not a puddle that hasn’t been splashed in. I don’t have money for endless inside activities, personally. The library does not fill an afternoon. Soft play and swimming isn’t something we can do daily. Sometimes it’s nice to have the option of using the local playgrounds and having a bloody picnic. I’ll always take mine out regardless but some of you are dreaming if you think endless mud squelching and puddle splashing doesn’t get tedious, even for the children.
