To feel the weather is actually now making me a terrible parent

Another day pouring with rain and resorting to tv or other long winded draining activities in the house. I’m so fed up. So miserable. It’s May now! I know complaining about it doesn’t make it better but I’ve just had enough. No fresh air again, just like the first 4 months of the year. It’s completely pouring down

OP posts:

Rainsuits and waterproofs and off to the park. Muddy puddles etc etc. home for early bath time (as long in the tub as they want) and hot chocolate and a movie with a picnic tea. Life is what you make it and staying in all day just because its raining is a recipe for disaster.

It becomes tedious when you have done this Every. Single. Day for the last three months.

Really would love to see all these posters saying “get their waterproofs on” try and attempt to do so with my child.

no, I’m not a lax gentle parent who has no boundaries. She just fucking hates the way waterproofs feel and it would result in a full wrestling match, screaming and her repeatedly taking them off.

Can't blame her. I can't stand the feel of waterproofs on myself either

mathanxiety · 22/05/2024 23:35

Stay in.

There's nothing wrong with TV, making a fort with couch cushions, scribbling, sensory play with dried rice or macaroni, etc. Long baths can be fun too.

You could get out to the library, but it's often more work than it's worth to get a toddler out in the rain.

vanilli78 · 23/05/2024 18:34

Do you live in Devon by any chance?! It’s been relentless here for months. I hear what you’re saying . Only so many puddle walks etc you can do. While kids don’t melt in the rain, getting soaked every day loses its shine after a while!

JayJayj · 23/05/2024 18:44

Just go for a walk in the rain. My little girl is 17 months now but we just put on wellies and her rain suit and go splashing in puddles! She absolutely loves it. Then we come home for a shower and some reading/ playing whatever she fancies.

Yawn.

We have had months and months of this.
Walking in the rain Every. Single. Day has lost it's shine.

Everywhere is so muddy that walking off road is an endurance test and not fun.

I don't mind the odd drizzly walk, but I do not find walking in pouring rain the least bit enjoyable and neither do most people who have posted on this thread.

A mumsnetter has coined a very apt phrase for people like you.

Lilacbluebells · 23/05/2024 18:57

A little girl was killed by a mudslide in Yorkshire Yorkshire mudslide: Leah Harrison, 10, died on school trip [[https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-69053280 www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-69053280

Obviously I’m not suggesting that this is commonplace but it does show there is such a thing as bad weather and sometimes going out in it isn’t wise. There’s a massive risk from reduced visibility when walking in traffic, everywhere is slippier, falling trees and branches and this awful tragedy. So I really wish people would stop with the ‘just put on a puddlesuit’ nonsense.

Leah Harrison was taking part in a "forest walk" during a residential trip when she was killed.

We don't seem to have normal rain anymore, it always seems to be torrential rain to the extent it is impossible to go out in without being drenched in two minutes. It's depressing, winter is bad enough without the dreary weather continuing almost to the start of summer.

Will she still enjoy it when she's 7 and walks become BORINGAH

16 months puddle suit, wellies and out!

Biffbaff · 24/05/2024 00:17

My son was around this age when lockdown hit and playgrounds/playgroups etc were off. Some things I remember doing are:
Watching lots of Hey Duggee/Andy's Dinosaur Adventures
Den in the living room with a "disco" from a musical toy
Paper taped to wall and crayons to mark it with
Play tunnel, doubled as a peekaboo toy as he used to stand inside it and pop it up and down
Big plastic storage box - he loved sitting in it with whatever was in there (usually toys, books)
Tuff tray for messy stuff/sensory play etc - top tip, go to Toolstation and get a cement mixing tray. They're cheaper and exactly the same. Really good for containing the mess, plonking them on it as a new play space.
Books..got so fed up of reading the same one over and over again.

Just a few ideas to mix up indoor entertainment, but also hard agree that the weather is shite and having full use of the garden, park, walking bloody anywhere would be fricking fantastic.

Yes we are all capable of putting waterproofs and wellies and leaving the house with our children. The point of the thread is that it’s been so wet and miserable on and off for a prolonged period that this is becoming tedious for all involved.

No way would I stay in the house all day with young children whatever the weather.

This. Wellies on and off you pop.

Could we have some sort of bingo card for these threads?

I have toddler twins. I have been “wellies on and off you pop”ping for seven months now.

Fair enough. Another variation is hopping on a random bus as that is really exciting for DC of that age. Still rainy but fine for half a day to kill time.

maddening · 24/05/2024 07:09

Yabu, we need rain and sun, there.will be lovely days and rainy days, so far.i think it has been nicely balanced with a mix of warm days,.mixed days and yes some rainy days.

The rain fills our reservoirs, waters.our gardens and the farmers crops - look at parts of Spain that have been in drought for 3 years- the countryside is dying there .

FanofLeaves · 24/05/2024 07:16

er, apparently the 18 months leading up to now have been the fourth wettest on U.K. record. It hasn’t been ‘nicely balanced’ in most parts of the country. Yep, we know we need rain. There is such a thing as too much though, even for plants and farmers. I don’t blame anyone for complaining about it.

YABU. Our reservoirs are full and our farmers need it to stop raining just now. The fields are waterlogged and they are massively behind with their planting. Food prices are going to rocket this year as this wet weather had affected parts of northern France and Germany as well.

I know perfectly well that Spain and other Mediterranean countries have been short of rain but this thread is about the UK.

When my DC were little, the weather was awful and funds were low - apart from going out in the rain, which they loved, me not so much we went to 'big' shops like;
Ikea (long drive but worth it)
B&Q, I used to let them choose screws from the pick and mix bit (that I needed anyway) and put them into the little bags provided
John Lewis
Pets at Home (always a winner)
Halfords is quite entertaining
Decathlon (big one with tents on display) and get bonus cheap wellies/waterproofs at the same time
New build show houses
Big garden centres

The biggest winner for a cheap rainy day was 'follow a random car' but your DS might be a bit young for that. We ended up in all sorts of places but we live 10 miles inland and I made sure to only follow southbound cars otherwise we might have ended up in Scotland.

A cheap train journey was also a good time killer with a bit of eye spy thrown in.

We did similar, as well as the train station (platforms were undercover and we could train spot) the airport (plane spotting and a coffee/ babycino) and pensioners’ coffee mornings (there were always enough of that generation who really enjoyed spending time with a little one - it was a novelty).

Our area has a dearth of children’s groups.

He also spent a lot of time in the bath at that age. Coloured water, bubbles and - this kept him occupied for ages - Duplo in the bath. We had a lot of Duplo vehicles, too.

A friend in a city used to buy a rover ticket for the bus.

It is so much harder when it rains, though, and needs far more planning and clean up. It also really depends on where you live - visiting grandparents in a seaside town was always horrible in the rain, you needed a car to get anywhere like the above - and it’s always a strong, driving rain there. Even when it does dry up the ground stays sodden for another couple of days.

Not balanced evenly though Far more rain than normal

Ok so when " funds are low" you could afford petrol to do long drives to ikea or follow random cars?

And a " cheap" train journey. In the UK? Not seen on of those for years. Take half hour ride from my house and looking at £ 60 return for a adult and 2 kids

You do realise it’s been winter? It’s meant to be weather like that, then it’s April showers and the last couple of weeks have been hot and sunny around here and most of the country if the news is anything to go by. caught the sun a little too much at the weekend watching the kids play football. The point the OP is making is that she feels a bad mum because she is staying in not doing anything. The response is to ignore the weather and go out and do something anyway the children don’t care. It’s not rocket science.

My children aren’t happy in the driving rain. It doesn’t matter how much hot chocolate and appropriate clothes and cheery attitude I have. You can’t use play park equipment in wellies. The last 18 months have been the wettest on record in our area.
