To feel the weather is actually now making me a terrible parent

Another day pouring with rain and resorting to tv or other long winded draining activities in the house. I’m so fed up. So miserable. It’s May now! I know complaining about it doesn’t make it better but I’ve just had enough. No fresh air again, just like the first 4 months of the year. It’s completely pouring down

I think what people forget with their enthusiastic suggestions of toddler groups and ‘arts and crafts’, is that they fill approximately 1 hour out of 12.

Whereas good weather means you can stay put in the park, walk, beach, garden, woods, picnic etc as long as you want

Kathryn1983 · 28/05/2024 20:26

Also it's completely fine to watch a bit more tv on a particularly bad weather day
it's not the devil incarnate and a bit of boredom does kids no harm either

for more actual practical advice try 5min mum they have lots of activities for kids that take 5min to set up

consider some as hoc childcare to have a break or rhyme time or story time at a local library perhaps

buddy up with another like minded mum with similar age kids and let them play together perhaps

if you have the space consider
indoor stepping stones and playing floor is lava things like that are good
you can get Montessori style balancing beams which kids love too
indoor obstacle race etc if you have the space (you can even move furniture out the way )
balloon bop or those spinners that look like sycamore seeds are fun and indoor friendly
get reusable stickers and let them
loose on the patio doors - mine did this for hours !
you can also do some pretty cool experiments with random kitchen stuff which yes only maybe occupy 45min or an hour but it's focus time with mum and I find the kids are then happier to do independent play after

with tiny toddlers honestly they actually love mundane helping tasks like loading dishes and washing
or helping with a Tesco shop so don't underestimate those things and think it all has to be a laugh a riot to make them happy

most after school care programs offer holiday clubs who do sports and term time there are usually lots of baby groups in urban areas

The next person who shows up chirping about waterproofs and puddles deserves to be trapped inside their house by a giant puddlesuit.

The next person implying on a sunny day they're down the beach with blissful kids and don't step foot indoors from dawn to dusk needs a serious memory assessment as they're looking with rose tinted glasses 🤦‍♀️

I don’t think anyone is, but it is nearly June. It is fairly normal to spend a lot of time outside at this time of year without needing half the stock of Muddy Puddles.

It's rained again all bloody day. If netball gets rained off again tomorrow for the second week I won't be happy

I was only thinking today that I really feel sorry for parents, in this hideous weather, as I was walking through town and noticing bedraggled wet families. It's just not fair, the weather we're having. Hoping for a change in it, anyway.

THIS!!

NO-ONE can argue with this!

I don’t live in a big house, I’m a single parent of two ND kids but life is what you make it! If you want to be pessimistic and miserable them go ahead and dwell in your pit of sorrow. I choose not to!

I give up! You can’t reason with these types. You do you Pollyanna!

(FYI def not miserable or pessimistic just would like to enjoy being outside IN SPRING AND SUMMER without wellies and a fucking pac a mac)

I have just had a horrific 100 mile drive down the A1 in torrential rain.
Visibility was awful, I aquaplaned across several small lakes large puddles and the spray from the lorries was scary.

I am a competent and confident driver but I felt anything but confident today.

Fortunately all the drivers were being sensible and slowed right down, but it was a very unpleasant experience.

I would have been no better off had I been wearing "the right clothes".

Too much rain is unpleasant for most of us and downright dangerous sometimes.

Yep! Glad you managed to arrive at your destination safely

Yawnfest79 · 29/05/2024 09:10

I want to emigrate! I’m sick of it! I couldn’t stay home all day with mine but it just means everything is stupidly expensive!

Segway16 · 29/05/2024 16:25

I feel the same. Every single day that I’m not working it pisses down and a lot of indoor activities (bowling, cinema) aren’t suitable for my ND child. Staying in the house is not suitable for any of my children. And my moods are very linked to the weather - endless grey and rain just drains me of energy. This weather is terrible for May / June and I’m fed up!

Littlemisscapable · 29/05/2024 16:40

Yeah its awful isn't it.... apparently its similar in Northern France / Belgium as well ? Where is summer ? Will we have to adapt and accept this is summer with climate change getting worse ? Why are many indoor activities soooo expensive particularly the older they get? I hear you OP..you are not alone !

WithACatLikeTread · 29/05/2024 18:33

I live in what is normally a dry part of the UK. Only this last few weeks have we been able to go and play in the park and grass as it was too muddy. We haven't been able to visit for months. I normally walk to play groups but I have had to miss a couple as I would have been absolutely drenched getting there. This week is rain on and off. I can't afford soft play all the time.

This weather is not normal.
