To feel the weather is actually now making me a terrible parent

Another day pouring with rain and resorting to tv or other long winded draining activities in the house. I’m so fed up. So miserable. It’s May now! I know complaining about it doesn’t make it better but I’ve just had enough. No fresh air again, just like the first 4 months of the year. It’s completely pouring down

OP posts:

Can you ask friends round and let the kids play even if only to tire him out a bit? It's relentless at that age but hopefully still has a nap.
How about a swim? Takes ages when counting the actually getting ready bit !

You do realise it’s been winter? It’s meant to be weather like that, then it’s April showers and the last couple of weeks have been hot and sunny around here and most of the country if the news is anything to go by. caught the sun a little too much at the weekend watching the kids play football. The point the OP is making is that she feels a bad mum because she is staying in not doing anything. The response is to ignore the weather and go out and do something anyway the children don’t care. It’s not rocket science.

It is late May. It hasn’t ‘been winter’ for quite some time. The rain has been frequent and prolonged in much of the country for many months, outside of seasonal expectations. Go and do some research on the net office website if you don’t believe me.

RampantIvy · 24/05/2024 09:16

No it hasn't.

Are you even in the UK?

TreesWelliesKnees · 24/05/2024 09:19

I remember those days well... 16 months old is at least too young to complain they're bored! I used to take my toddlers to a garden centre that had an indoor section and a cafe, the library, friends' houses with an invite back, etc. Also in some areas you might find things like specialist animal centres that have open days. Not too far from me there's a huge bird, fish and reptile pet shop. That used to take up a whole afternoon.

Today is nice here. Before that there was torrential rain with a 2 day break for sun

buffyslayer · 24/05/2024 11:24

It's definitely not been nice the last couple of weeks
There were 2 days exactly where I am as I sat in the garden for both of them
Netball was cancelled Wednesday due to an amber rain warning, it poured down yesterday and today it's raining yet again

Tomorrow looks nice so far....

To feel the weather is actually now making me a terrible parent
Tumblewit · 24/05/2024 13:01

Today is nice here, and no rain forecast for the next 7 days other than slight chance on Sunday

Scotgran1 · 26/05/2024 10:49

take them to local library, museums, things of interest. I live in Edinburgh but usually there is something local.

Assuming that the OP lives where they haven't closed local libraries or there are plentiful museums.

It's always the same on these threads where city dwellers are oblivious of the fact that not everyone has the same local amenities or public transport options as they do.

Travellingislife · 28/05/2024 09:15

Ynbu. I hate the weather we’ve been having too. Everything is much easier if it’s sunny and warm, well I’ll even take grey but dry.
I agree with going to baby groups and still go out even if it’s raining but it sucks and I moan a lot about the rain. I have to walk the dog at least twice a day so we’re forced out, that passes some time.
My youngest is 6 months and I do baby groups when the oldest is at pre school. I also meet up with other mums in each others houses and that keeps me sane. I could not just stay in the house all day.
When the oldest isn’t at pre school and it’s awful weather we still go to the play park or we might do a toddler group at the library or go to soft play. I make sure we have at least one activity out of the house a day, ideally one in the morning and one in the afternoon though.
We had great weather on Saturday and we were outside for most of it, it makes such a difference to everyone’s mood.

RampantIvy · 28/05/2024 09:18

I saw a headline on a newspaper yesterday stating that we have had the worst spring for 200 years.

Anyone saying that they have had lovely weather must live in a very localised micro climate, and I want to move there.

BigDahliaFan · 28/05/2024 09:33

We are North West and have had about half a dozen genuinely nice spring days so far this year.

It's pretty much been grey, cold and miserable since July last year.

It does get one down.

Arts and crafts, play in the bath, tog up and go outside to jump in puddles, invite a friend over with a little one for company. It is what it is but you attitude makes a huge difference. Try to stop feeling so sorry for yourself

Oh please. The amount of days we’ve had (today is miserable too!) that are wet, there’s no amount of jolly hockeysticks that are going to make indoor activities particularly appealing or exciting at this point. It’s nothing to do with attitude, it’s been relentless and there’s nothing wrong with wanting a few dry days consecutively to enjoy being outside. We don’t all live in nice big houses or have toddlers that are particularly interested in ‘arts and crafts’ either. Last time I checked the day was quite a few hours long, these kind of activities fill 15 minutes at best if your children are very young. I’ve just read an article about this possibly turning into the wettest summer on record, puddlesuit wankers can do one.

Lilacbluebells · 28/05/2024 10:35

MN is a bit strange about wet weather. It’s like acknowledging that ‘yeah, it’s a bit shit isn’t it!’ will bring down biblical wrath upon us.

Mine are booked into a role play centre this afternoon but the morning has consisted of Peppa pig Blush

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/05/2024 11:26

Agree wet weather and small kids isn't nice

But I found it worse staying in

So waterproofs buggy /car and go to thr library or mother and toddler. Most churches run them so find out which so what days

Least at 16mths should sleep 1-3 so some peace for you after lunch

Lilacbluebells · 28/05/2024 11:28

It’s half term. Most toddler / baby groups aren’t running.

@Hesma

all those things are shit especially if you’ve done them time and time again which most people have due to how shit the weather has been for months now.

oh and people are allowed to feel sorry for themselves! This weather is shite! It should be sunny and warm now!

Invest in some waterproofs and get outside!
we can't control the weather and children don't care about the rain. Plus bonus - play grounds and the beach are often empty 🤣
just have a warm indoor activity and hot chocolate ready for when you get home and you'll be grand

@Kathryn1983

Nah! Because…

a) I’m sure op already has waterproof gear. Even with waterproofs, it’s still unpleasant when it’s the kind of pissy rain it has been.

b) what’s so amazing about an empty park or beach. I’d rather have nice weather and have lots of people about.

c) not everyone likes hot chocolate, some people think it’s rank. I would also think that even if you do like you’d be sick to death of it by now given how much shite weather we’ve had this year.

LuckySantangelo35 · 28/05/2024 19:56

@Kathryn1983

oh and d) some kids do care about the weather. Some don’t like being out in rain. Kids have differences and personal preferences just like adults.

I don’t live in a big house, I’m a single parent of two ND kids but life is what you make it! If you want to be pessimistic and miserable them go ahead and dwell in your pit of sorrow. I choose not to!

Ok then stay indoors and be miserable 🫣

my kids have never complained about a rainy day as we have the right clothes and they are used to it
puddle jumping
duck feeding
even a theme park is fine in the rain

my nieces also give no shits about the rain

you can drink any warm drink you like - or no drink I prefer Horlicks to hot chocolate

maybe we have a scandivian attitude to it all

the rain has upset me due to the lack of outdoor washing not outdoor activities for kids

it gets to a point where if you choose to let the weather ruin your life that's on you not the weather!
