Do you wear make up when boarding a plane?

I’m going on holiday soon and it’s my first time flying. I usually wear make up everyday and want to wear make up on a 5 hour flight. I’ve read make up should be avoided on planes due to drying the skin out. Does anyone else wear make when on a plane or is it it best to avoid?

What time is the flight? I always think it's very odd when people rock up to the airport at 5am or whatever with a full face of make up. Like, you could have had some extra time in bed!
But I'm not vain so I don't care what I look like when flying (or at any other time).

You don’t care what you look like, very odd that you judge how other people look like then.

As long as you look like your passport photo, you'll be fine.

Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks and bloody Mary mix.

Thank you so much for the responses. It’s just that I’ve read everywhere to avoid wearing. Don’t want to not wear it and not look my best when I land on holiday. X

It’s fine to wear make up on a flight, but it is drying and I have noticed a few people end up looking a bit cakey on arrival as a result. It won’t cause any real damage, just doesn’t look great.

If I want/need to look my best on arrival, I don’t wear any make up on the flight, make sure I apply a light moisturiser a couple of times on the flight, and then put my make up on before landing.

You won't look good make up or no make up after a long flight (8 hours plus)

Most people prioritise comfort - moisturiser, eye drops, use the blanket and headphones to get some rest.

These days many people change into trackies specifically to travel in as there's a feeling that no point wasting good clothes in travelling days.

Use to fly a lot for work, one hour flights I would wear make up as usual. Long distance I normally take it off after boarding with makeup wipes if im wearing any ( I don’t always) love a good hot face cloth, not sure if airlines still do them. I’d re-apply a little before landing depending on location and occasion.

I don't wear makeup the rest of the time, so I wouldn't put it on just to go on a plane.

I do try to plaster myself in brutally expensive moisturiser from the testers in Duty Free to counter the dry air, though 😀

This. It’s part of the holiday lol

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 21/05/2024 18:21

I always wear light make-up wherever I'm going. It wouldn't occur to me to do any different to go on a plane tbh. How dry can one plane trip really make your skin?! Also, unless you've got a welcoming committee waiting on the runway, I don't see why it would be particularly important to look immaculate straight off the flight. Everyone looks a bit dishevelled getting off the plane.

Business class does, at least some. You can buy the individually wrapped face towels, they are fantastic and very useful. But sadly not hot obviously.

As I said in my earlier post it depends on where you're from. UK air is dry/very low humidity all year round so plane air isn't much different (hence everyone on this thread saying plane air is alright). If you're coming from a humid place, plane air will be very drying and can even be painful.

Bunnyannesummers · 21/05/2024 18:27

I do skincare on the flight and then apply make up about twenty minutes before landing

I agree. Even my nostrils and eyes become painfully dry.

Most of the cabin crew wear make up.

even the men 😎

FiveGuyPastry · 21/05/2024 18:29

I just do as normal and turn up. Never thought about it.

After a 5 hour flight + luggage + customs I look like a mess anyway regardless of makeup. 🤣

why not split the difference and start the flight bare faced and toss on a little bit before landing? But really it doesn’t matter you won’t notice a difference if you’re wearing makeup or not.

JoleneTookHerMan · 21/05/2024 19:42

I don't on the plane as my face and eyes always feel quite dry during the flight. I normally like to slather on a hydrating cream, lip balm and eyedrops during the flight.

Before landing or in the airport toilets after landing, I might put some light make up on.

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 21/05/2024 19:59

In the nicest way, you're overthinking.

RampantIvy · 21/05/2024 20:03

No.
I'm in a crowded airport right now and it looks like most women are make up free.

pizzaHeart · 21/05/2024 20:06

If I have time I do foundation, blusher and lipstick, if not I wouldn’t worry much.

JJathome · 21/05/2024 20:07

Idontjetwashthefucker · 21/05/2024 17:07

Nope, I take a water spray for my face and moisturise frequently, cba putting make up on. Most of my flights (long haul) are very early in the morning and I'd rather have an extra half hour in bed

It takes you half an hour to put make up on? Wow. I take max 5.

Calliopespa · 21/05/2024 20:08

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/05/2024 14:06

Yes, mine looks like a something from a mortician's portfolio.

Do they actually have a portfolio? Is it fo you can choose how you want your coffin make up done?

re make up I’ve never thought about it and never noticed an issue . I wear a light liquid foundation when I do wear make up, but for people who wear quite heavy make up I would have thought on a long haul flight it might smudge when sleeping?

honeylulu · 21/05/2024 20:13

I wear make up every day so normal to wear on flight. If an early flight I put it on after security. If long haul I take wipes and clean off the foundation and reapply after sleeping/ before landing. It's not about how you look for others, it's how you feel. I feel best with make up on!

Mrscharlieeeee · 21/05/2024 20:14

Yes I do, if it's a long haul night flight I do skincare on the plane and remove it all but short flights of 4 hours or so I'll have a full face on.

PeloMom · 21/05/2024 20:15

Depends. If I’m boarding a 6hr+ red eye I’d likely sleep - so no make up. If it’s a relatively short flight during the day (and not an early ungodly hour)- most likely I’d wear make up

PennyPugwash · 21/05/2024 20:42

I never wear it when flying for work. I'm usually on the red eye and just haven't the energy at that hour of the day. I apply it when I land in the airport bathroom.
When going for hols and weekend away, I always wear it

I would also rather hit the testers in the duty free 🤣
