Do you wear make up when boarding a plane?

I’m going on holiday soon and it’s my first time flying. I usually wear make up everyday and want to wear make up on a 5 hour flight. I’ve read make up should be avoided on planes due to drying the skin out. Does anyone else wear make when on a plane or is it it best to avoid?

Yes, but only light stuff - eyebrows, concealer, cheek tint.

If it’s a long flight I decant cleanser into a little pot and around a hour before landing I clean my face and reapply makeup. It’s more about feeling fresh and remoisturising. I have little pots with moisturiser, tinted moisturiser, a slice of cheek and lip tint and lip balm. My eyebrow pencil travels in my handbag.

Thank you so much for the responses. It’s just that I’ve read everywhere to avoid wearing. Don’t want to not wear it and not look my best when I land on holiday. X

There is no harm in wearing makeup on flights however, you could prep your face with moisturiser before the flight and take your makeup in your hand luggage to apply before landing.

Yeah, I do sometimes. I've never heard anything about it being a bad idea. On a long flight I might wash my face before sleeping, and sometimes I'll put it back on and sometimes not depending what I'm doing immediately after the flight. Nobody but passport control are looking at my face, and I don't think they'd judge me either way.

Nobody looks their best when they land. Everyone looks a bit disheveled, quite rumpled and generally a bit red and sweaty. Then everyone goes to their hotel, has a shower, puts their new holiday clothes (not their travelling clothes), got into some air con and everyone looks like the sparklier version of themselves.

What time is the flight? I always think it's very odd when people rock up to the airport at 5am or whatever with a full face of make up. Like, you could have had some extra time in bed!
But I'm not vain so I don't care what I look like when flying (or at any other time).

My passport photo is so bad I don’t think they’d recognise me if I look all fresh and sparkly.

ShadesofPoachedSmoke · 21/05/2024 14:04

I don't as I have dry skin anyway and flights dry it out even more. So I go bare faced so I can cleanse and reapply a good moisturiser during the flight. I also love a hydrating mist for travelling too.

mitogoshi · 21/05/2024 14:05

Not usually but I'm not a huge wearer, I tend to put a bit on before landing. A lot depends on how early you need to head to the airport I find, last time I flew we left at 5.30am

socks1107 · 21/05/2024 14:06

I was cabin crew for ten years and always make up, still do on flights. Never had an issue with my skin

Yes, mine looks like a something from a mortician's portfolio.

I rarely go out the door without makeup on! Not caked in it, but always at least a BB cream, blush and mascara. If I was doing a long flight I'd remove the makeup once settled, slather on moisturiser and enjoy some rest. I'd then apply makeup before landing. But for a short flight I just wear makeup as normal. Last time I had a small facial hydrating spray so used that a couple of times during the flight and it was nice and refreshing so I'd do that again.

Willywaitingforbreakfast · 21/05/2024 14:22

Absolutely not, I wear fake eyelashes as well which would do my head In on a long flight. Do you makeup on the plane if anything will kill some time as well

KreedKafer · 21/05/2024 14:52

There's no reason at all not to wear makeup on a plane, unless you happen to feel more comfortable with a bare face. If you'd wear makeup for a five-hour train journey, you can wear it for a five-hour flight. Your face will be unharmed.

For a five-hour flight, I'd just wear whatever makeup I usually wear. If I was flying long-haul overnight, I might take some wipes and remove my makeup at some point during the flight and then freshen my face up a bit before landing. but that's only to make me feel a bit brighter and more awake.

Whereas I think it's very odd that anyone would be looking at other people's faces at the airport and judging them for their harmless personal choices.

I don't care what I look like

Weird that you care so much about what other people look like, then.

FeedMeSantiago · 21/05/2024 15:06

Depends on the flight - a 6am flight, no make up. An 8pm flight home after a last day of the holiday spent sightseeing then yes, as I'd be wearing make up anyway.

I've probably flown a roughly equal amount with and without make up on and have never noticed a difference in my skin. I always moisturise before make up as I have dry skin and I moisturise on make up free days too.

SlothsNeverGetIll · 21/05/2024 16:53

I've just done a very long flight and didn't wear a scrap of makeup or my contact lenses.
That allowed me to regularly spritz my face and put eye drops in my eyes and put vaseline on my lips to keep everything moisturised.
On a short flight I might wear a touch of makeup though.

Wolfpa · 21/05/2024 16:56

You are going to look rubbish no matter what. Do what makes you feel comfortable

ohheadhurts · 21/05/2024 17:01

UK air is quite dry (really low humidity) so you'll be alright – your skin is used to dry air. If I've lived somewhere with humidity for a while, my face physically hurts on the plane due to how dry it feels. If I've been in the UK for a while, plane air feels more or less the same.

This. I don't bother these days.

Flights are sweaty and stuffy and uncomfortable, your hair and makeup is going to look a bit rough after a flight and hours in airports anyway.

Deebee90 · 21/05/2024 17:06

I do when flying out but if I’m flying back from somewhere warm I don’t on the way back. Just plenty of moisturiser

Idontjetwashthefucker · 21/05/2024 17:07

Nope, I take a water spray for my face and moisturise frequently, cba putting make up on. Most of my flights (long haul) are very early in the morning and I'd rather have an extra half hour in bed

falloutfirce · 21/05/2024 17:11

I wear the usual make up I always wear when I'm out of the house. I don't feel my skin dries out much and I don't use any extra moisturiser. My skin doesn't tend to be dry.

EmilyTjP · 21/05/2024 17:13

Never heard this in my life. I wear make up as normal.

Pepsiisbetterthancoke · 21/05/2024 17:15

As others have said you are not going to look fresh faced after a long haul flight if that’s what you are going on. Unless you reapply but doing your make up in a plane toilet would be quite grim

Personally I would much prefer to feel fresh on a flight rather than caked in make up. But that’s due to personal preference not because it’s what I have read (never read that you shouldn’t so not sure where you have seen it to be saying it’s everywhere)

Chypre · 21/05/2024 17:18

Yes for a short haul (2-3-5 hours), definite NO for anything 8hrs+. It just looks like crap after all tossing and trying to sleep and dehydration, I prefer to go with a bare face and a sheet mask stash
