All these weight loss drugs... surely we are heading towards disaster?

So as we all know there are various weight loss drugs that have become very popular in recent months.

It seems like the whole of Hollywood is using it.

Even regular people are spending huge amounts of money on it from online pharmacies.

I get that these drugs might be useful for certain people with real medical conditions, but really a lot of people are using it as a quick fix to be thin.

With no consideration to side effects or future health. And without thinking about what happens when you stop it?

Surely the best way to lose weight involves no drugs. No fad diets. But exercising more, moving more, eating a balanced diet. Retraining your brain and finding food and exercise you enjoy.

I say this as an overweight person too! Surely there are other ways.

If every other person is taking these drugs won't there be a huge pool of people to monitor side effects etc?

Aibu to say the whole thing makes me feel very uneasy.

I have long thought that if the government were serious about solving the obesity health crisis they would tax processed foods more heavily and use the cash to subsidise foods sold in their natural state (or within one or two steps) but no one wants to solve it because it’s making lots of people rich and behind them rich people richer.

Poppysmom22 · 21/05/2024 14:58

But we also need to give people time back to prepare ‘good’ food.

If you look at all the mad things people have done to loose weight in the past - taking sliming pills full of amphetamines, taking laxatives, 'heroin chic' got it's name from somewhere... colonic irrigation (surely that's not ok...), eating loads of low fat foods filled with aspartame... They ate tapeworms in the Victorian era FFS!

If it was a simple as 'use a bit of discipline and eat more kale'... do you think people would be eating tapeworms and popping speed!

Smoking too, that’s a known appetite suppressant.

Poppysmom22 · 21/05/2024 15:01

@shellswirl it’s not a lack of education in my case but I agree that the lack of food sciences in The curriculum is disturbing. I’m addicted to food. But unlike other addictions I can’t just never have it again.

You don't need to upload a photo... there are no checks.
Personally I am a huge fan of Wegovy. I have lost a stone in 4 months.

I would not be putting fuck knows what into my body for 3.5lbs a month.

Poppysmom22 · 21/05/2024 15:04

Maybe if I had never been a healthy weight I could resign myself to this state more easily I don’t know.

Is there a reason you can't eat a balanced diet?

WayOutOfLine · 21/05/2024 15:06

Thing is, no-one has to take these drugs. We already are heading for disaster with 64% of women over 40% being obese, not overweight, that's most of Mumsnet- if that study I posted is true. I don't see how a smallish percentage of people taking these medications is making things worse.

What is a balanced diet? I can only be healthy BMI on one meal a day...that's when I was young too. Do you consider that to be a healthy diet?

I do eat a balanced diet but I eat too much of everything I know this. I eat my feelings it’s beyond fuel and engine it’s heavily linked to my emotional state and I walk miles everyday literally miles, and that doesn’t make a difference either. I’m conscious of UPFs so I avoid them as much as I can. I don’t have loads of sugar, when I was younger I could cut the sugar and shite and move a bit more and I could lose it but now literally nothing shifts it

OneTC · 21/05/2024 15:10

Within reason I honestly couldn't care how people lose weight, it's a choice for them alone. I'm lucky with my weight and metabolism, it requires no will power, it's just how I work. Not everyone is so lucky though so anyone that wants to should have at it

BustyLee · 21/05/2024 15:10

Poppysmom22 · 21/05/2024 13:26

It’s not about being thin it’s about not being obese and reducing poor health outcomes in future. It won’t make me a size 8 my skeleton is bigger than an 8. But it might stop me having a heart attack at 50 like my dad

Are skeletons a particular size?

I thought I was “big boned” until I went a bit ott with a diet and went from a size 14 to a size six…then a four…:

Totally understand this. I will have to try really hard to shift one lb in a week.

@shellswirl mounjaro IS NOT a treatment for diabetes it is specifically designed for weight loss.

Not true. It is the brand name for tirzepatide which is used, like semaglutide, for both diabetes and weight loss. https://www.ema.europa.eu/en/medicines/human/EPAR/mounjaro

You can get this through low carb/keto, without having to take drugs.

I done keto/low carb. I can't process protein quick enough and it made me ill.

Poppysmom22 · 21/05/2024 15:23

@BustyLee i don't think I’m big boned because that’s not a thing 🤣

Surely you never we had weight loss issues . I have always lost weight easily until I hit my 40s , I’ve been on every diet possible the last 2 years and nothing works as before so I’m giving mounjaro a go . I exercise 4 times a week , have an active life and count my calories religiously .

Etincelle · 21/05/2024 15:30

If people are worried about taking weight loss meds then don't take them. No need to fake concern for strangers who do want to take it.

What's your one meal a day? How big is your portion size? How many calories are in it? My last 'meal' was my lunch which was half a tub of cottage cheese and some salad veg. Do you need to eat just that a day to stay a healthy bmi?
