Just having a laugh with the kids as DD4's first word was Cheese!

She had done the usual babbly stuff and we did all the usual "Oh that was dada, that was mama" thing, but the first honest to goodness word she said that we recognised without a doubt was Cheese! Luckily it was a weekend and we all heard it otherwise I dont think anyone would have believed me!

She was in her high chair, I gave her her lunch and said "ooh cheese!" and she said it right back. It was her favourite food, still is!

Hit me with your weirdest first words!

My daughter said zebra perfectly clearly when I waggled a toy zebra at her. She was ridiculously young, and didn’t say anything else until the normal age for speech. I wouldn’t have believed it but my Mum was there too and backed me up!

My first word was ‘pretty’, said whilst looking in the mirror…

As my DDs was "Donald's" you can guess what she was talking about! She was older though, past 3 as she's autistic.

When (NT) DS was about three he asked to go to "Fat Donalds", and of course its been called that ever since!

My DC's was bubble!

SapphosRock · 19/05/2024 21:17

DS's first word was 'lunch'. He used to call me 'lunch' while pointing at my breasts.

Cats! We had loads of cats coming in the garden and she’s still mad about cats. We have a cat

ClonedSquare · 19/05/2024 21:18

"Cheese" was one of our son's first clear words. Said with an outstretched hand as I gave him bits of Babybel. Never occurred to me that was strange, boy still loves his cheese.

SneezedToothOut · 19/05/2024 21:18

Friend’s daughter’s first word: fucks sake.

nicky2512 · 19/05/2024 21:19

DDs was shoes. Very clearly when passing Clark’s. She always loved her shoes and at 22 still does.
Ds was the usual mama and dada and then car.

Persipan · 19/05/2024 21:20

My son's first word was 'handle'.

DuchessNope · 19/05/2024 21:21

My DD’s first word was ‘more’. The first time she put two words together it was ‘more cheese’

DS first time combining words was “again cheese”. He could also say toasted teacake before he could say most single words. His actual first word apart from mama was lolly.

Shouldbedoing · 19/05/2024 21:23

My sons first word was bourbon
As in biscuit.
Mostly he pointed and grunted and big sister got what he wanted for him.
His next clear word was chocolate!

LondonFox · 19/05/2024 21:26

Dd: Kado (avocado).
DS: melk (yes, not milk and it is still melk 🤦🏼‍♀️)
Second was door as it was a way to get out.
In top 3 all my children had UP as a way to get them out of high chair, into swing, hug etc.

CurlewKate · 19/05/2024 21:29

My dad was much more spiritual than yours! Her first proper connected words were "pitty lights!" said at the Christmas lights switch on in our town. Her next was "I not wear that!" when I was in the process of buying her a navy blue swearshirt with Noddy on it.....

Lindy2 · 19/05/2024 21:30

DD's were Dadda, Mumma and then Cheeseballs - as in cheesy puff crisps. 🙈 I think Cheese might have felt like a slightly more healthy word choice.

Caswallonthefox · 19/05/2024 21:31

My ds's first word was his version of our dogs name, which progressed to his actual name with the wrong starting letter.

sparklychair · 19/05/2024 21:37

A friend's son's first word was "lawnmower" - however he was a late talker. His parents were quite confused.

RaspberryHouseBlues · 19/05/2024 21:40

Both of my mine, DS (10) and DD (5) had No as their first word, as did I according to my Mum. At one point DD said it so much that we referred to her as Little No, which I think I actually got from another Mumsnetter.

MuggleMe · 19/05/2024 21:50

DD2's was 'egg', she was watching her sister and cousins do an Easter egg hunt.

Spareincoming · 19/05/2024 21:54

Eldests was “tractor” probably down to his Dad announcing he was home most of the time by slamming the doors and half shouting “that fucking tractor!”

My grandaughter’s first word was cake! Screamed in a very loud voice at a trolley full of cakes going by in a restaurant

DS’s first word was cake.

My DW’s was sausages.

DNephew’s was kebab

We are a fairly food obsessed family…

How on earth? 😂

I had 9 month old DD2 tucked under my arm As I read the same book for the umpteenth Time to DD1.... Clear as day she said "Gruffello!"

Interestingly enough she is autistic, and hyperfocuses on stuff. When I practiced phonics with her older sister, she quickly absorbed the information, was obsessed with an interactive Alphablocks game, so basically taught herself to read at the age of 3! Her twin brother however was 7 before it all clicked for him... his first word was our dogs name....so much for Mama!

PadstowGirl · 19/05/2024 22:06

Dc1 "Door"
Dc2 "Goooooaaaal" whilst watching football.
Dc3 "No" second word "mine" the sad legacy of being a third child. 😅
