I'm sitting open mouthed listening to the personal details of the life of our next-door but one neighbour. Does she think no-one else might be sitting in their gardens on this gorgeous sunny day.

And yesterday, I was waiting in the car with the windows open waiting to pick up DS1, and had to endure a racist rant from the man in the garden of a nearby house.

incredible!

@chilliprawn

Nope . It was someone I worked with . I've got no control over other peoples behaviour. Probably did it for shits and giggles .They weren't recordings as far as I know just random passers by chatting that they listened to.

We are noisy pitas I'm afraid, probably entitled too for good measure. Couldn't care less, just cba.
BUT
We will wind it in if either side have people round, to keep the castle- esque illusion, even to the point of going inside to give them some space and let them have their turn at being noisy.

MistyRoseBlue · 20/05/2024 16:15

I didn't listen to them . I wasn't there . They just told us about it at work and some of the conversations they listened to . I've no control over other people and their actions .

How ? I can't control what comes out of people's mouths or their actions. I think you've been out in the sun too long 😂 Tell you what if it makes you feel better report it to the police or the daily mail 😂

I didn't listen In to the conversations as I wasn't there . They just repeated the convos they heard . So what ? I couldn't give a fuck . I don't know these people and they don't know me and to be frank I can't be fucked to keep replying to an uptight Arsehole . So fire away all you want .

I heard someone in the neighbouring garden having sex yesterday evening. I decided to finish reading my book indoors!

Gosh, aren't your gardens overlooked?

Domtickandlarry · 20/05/2024 16:33

YANBU - the roofer on the house opposite us has been WHINING and bitching about his ex-wife for a week. I don’t know how one of the others hasn’t thrown him off the roof yet!

Yesmate · 19/05/2024 16:16

Next door but one? You must have been straining to hear unless they were shouting? Are you sure it was your neighbour, could they have had people over that didn’t realise how close by the neighbours are?

I can hear my neighbours 4 doors away. They don’t talk they shout. They are not old but I’m wondering if they are deaf. They shout at each other - they shout at their daughter - they shoot at the poor dog. They are a pain in the neck!!! Pa I have zero objection to neighbours talking in their gardens but please just stop shouting ( and swearing)

Noodles1234 · 20/05/2024 17:46

I know!
totally understand you will hear people, but I always try to be considerate over the noise we make, ie not too loud, no swearing or anything abusive (not that we are like that, but I’ve picked up on my FiL being a little mean).

Music, not often but have done, but always “middle of the road music” and no swearing rap music or thumping bass lines.

bifold doors you hear all the inside of their houses too, I’ve heard all sorts of personal info so I pop the TV or radio on, I haven’t mentioned what about but really wish people realised in case people have a gossip next door.

TeeBagGer · 20/05/2024 17:47

I can assure you that no one can hear me from my garden!

Rickx · 20/05/2024 17:48

YANBU I'm constantly amazed how people loudly divulge personal information in public spaces. Someone suggested you put on headphones if you don't want to hear, but I'd say that you have a perfect right to sit in your own garden without needing to hear personal details of your neighbours!

Glasgowgal200 · 20/05/2024 18:25

Was on a bus a few years ago and woman who was sitting behind me was having a phone conversation with presumably her boss and she was trying to get a day off as her child was ill and they were refusing her as she wasn't the person who was unwell and were, trying to get her to get someone else to look after her. Don't know what the outcome was!!!!! Sometimes it's better than the TV when you're on public transport. It's fascinating listening to other people's convos!!!!!

Tospyornottospy · 19/05/2024 15:54

But why should they care if someone can hear them? Unless they are confessing to a crime or something 😀

Privacy?

I'm cringing more at the fact you're obviously listening in on other people's conversations. I'd apply the "not my circus, not my monkeys" adage and move on with my life determined to reserve my nose for my business only.

There is a difference between listening and hearing.

NotIAm · 20/05/2024 19:33

There is a difference between listening and hearing.

Absolutely. I really didn’t want to hear my neighbours having sex in their garden.

venus7 · 20/05/2024 19:34

1offnamechange · 19/05/2024 16:56

I don't understand people who say things like this
Surely you have met people who talk loudly before?

When my neighbour sits in her garden and I'm in mine, there's approximately 2 feet between us, albeit part of that blocked by a fence. We're closer than I am to my own backdoor. I can hear her better than my family in my own house, so when she is talking full volume about her relationship it is impossible NOT to hear her, as much as I'd prefer silence.

Unless you expect people to wander round their OWN GARDENS with headphones in constantly, and thereby risk not hearing their own family call to them, or the doorbell going (and also, just, why should you!), it's not 'obviously listening in' out of any sort of nosiness, it's being physically incapable of NOT hearing.

OP isn't saying she does anything with the information she overhears, just that she can't help hearing it and wonders why people are happy for their neighbours to overhear what can often be quite private and confidential conversations.

Which makes perfect sense to me, my neighbour has never stopped me in the street to tell me how well her ex used to fuck her, so I'm assuming it's not information she particularly wants me to know, therefore OP querying why people seem to someone think a small fence or hedge magically renders them inaudible is a fair point.

Beautifully, and clearly, expressed.

BasiliskStare · 20/05/2024 19:34

@AgnesX - you are right I probably should have done , but as a woman of a certain age , rather selfishly , I was rather more concerned about getting my big suitcase out of the luggage rack and on to the ( non terminus) station platform. 😊Or I should have mentioned it earlier - I see your point .
