I'm sitting open mouthed listening to the personal details of the life of our next-door but one neighbour. Does she think no-one else might be sitting in their gardens on this gorgeous sunny day.

And yesterday, I was waiting in the car with the windows open waiting to pick up DS1, and had to endure a racist rant from the man in the garden of a nearby house.

incredible!

Some neighbours across had friends round. DD’s bedroom faces their garden and she had her window open. She heard one man exclaim ‘I’m going for a piss.’
However dh’s slammed her window shut on hearing one man say’Yeah all lives matter.’

I realise I will be shot down in flames, but please explain the problem with "yeah all lives matter"? In what context was this said.

I was under the impression that all lives do matter equally - or am I wrong?

No, I was parked in a street in a different area waiting to pick DS up

Then don't worry about it.

Don't worry what goes on in other streets, and other houses and other gardens.

Just get on with your own business and leave people to get on with theirs.

What you overheard isn't any of your business.

I would dearly love to report to my NDN that the apple of her eye youngest son is not going to Uni as she suspects. I only know this because he proudly tells his mates this when he is prowling around his back verandah next to mine, shouting into his phone. He is also clearly an Andrew Tate fan judging by other things he rants about. He spends a lot of time shouting into the phone, shouting at his gaming console and basically shouting in general. He also smokes a hell of a lot of pot. Would love to know where the little darling is getting the money to pay for it as he doesn’t ever go anywhere.

It’s normally said in response to ‘black lives matter’, as a way of saying that specific action shouldn’t be taken to reduce racist violence against people of colour. So often seen as a bit of a racist dog whistle.

If you realise you will be “shot down in flames” then surely that means you know what the issue is with that statement, and if the daughter slammed the window shut, then surely you don’t need the context spelt out to you either.

VeryHappyBunny · 20/05/2024 03:00

I was interested in what context the sentence was used.

So am I wrong to think that all lives matter equally? Or do you think that some matter more than others?

A bit different, but I live in Central Europe, in a city that attracts a lot of tourists. I was on the train yesterday evening, coming back from visiting a friend. The train was quite empty and the British couple across the aisle from me were discussing whether they thought I was Czech or Hungarian, or possibly a Ukrainian refugee. They discussed my weight (not thin enough to be Ukrainian apparently), my colouring, hair, what I was wearing. I leaned over eventually and said “Do you mind? And are you not aware that most people here speak English?” They shut up after that and were silent for the rest of the journey.

People should lower down their voices.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 20/05/2024 07:54

Ok I’ll spell it out.
He was a white middle aged man. Yes wearing his sports attire ( whilst showing no visible signs of being heavily into fitness) complaining about all the fuss the Black Lives Matter campaign was attracting.
Dd didn’t want to listen to him telling the world he needed the toilet or his racist views.

shocked? no

curious? yes

I have a racist neighbour - what are you curious about?

FluentRubyDog · 20/05/2024 08:05

godmum56 · 19/05/2024 20:46

so what should I (and others) do? Stay indoors? sit with the car windows shut?

Just don't listen in and carry on enjoying your life. It's that easy. Most people do it all the time. Non-nosy ones, at least.

Never happened. Not once. DH prefers sulking, sadly. And I have no sensitivity, just smirking into my tea about the whole thing.

I was waiting in a hospital department last week. 2 staff sat at a desk with PC terminal less than 8ft away were discussing test results. Obviously thought I wouldn’t understand or couldn’t hear. Yes I did and yes I could.

It obviously isn't "listening in". Some people on this thread just love a spite session. You know which ones. Grow up. It isn't school.

And READ the post.

OP said it was a neighbour two doors away.

She said she was in the car with the window open. (On a warm sunny day in most places)

She did nothing wrong.
