To request my complimentary stay after all these years

ElsieandMavis · 17/05/2024 18:57

I had a really disappointing stay at a hotel about 10 years ago. When I complained to the manager, she was really apologetic and offered me a complimentary 3 night stay as a gesture of goodwill and to give them the opportunity to show me the usual quality of their product.

For various reasons, I never went back to her to arrange the complimentary stay.

AIBU to contact her now after 10 years to redeem my freebie? If so, how should I word the email request? I’ve checked that the same manager is still in charge at the hotel.

I work in a position where I sometimes offer similar kinds of things. Often people come back within a year or two. If someone came back after a decade I'd definitely think they were a cheeky fucker, but if I'd not included an end date I'd more than likely still honour it.

A few issues that might pop up if you go ahead and chance your arm: the manager who offered it has very likely moved on. Has ownership changed hands over the past decade? What's the difference in cost between now and ten years ago for a three night stay?

No the manager is still there, as she said.

Shes never been able to move on. Never felt she could leave. Because one day, she might come back. The Woman Of The Three Night Freebie. She haunts her dreams and torments her days.

OP for all you know she’s never slept well at night since. The fact you never came back may have tortured her.

Release this woman from the hell of her own making.

In that case, it would be wrong not to.

Worth trying but anything pre covid doesn't seem to be viable anymore. X

Pre Covid?! This is practically pre- The Black Death

Jiski · 17/05/2024 19:23

If you don’t ask you don’t get. Just say, “this was offered 10 years ago I guess it’s probably not valid but I wanted to check if I can use it..” or something along those lines. A quick email to somewhere you’ve never been for a quick answer. It’s not going to hurt anyone

I was really impressed with her customer service when I raised the issues. She was genuinely apologetic and keen to resolve the problems so they didn’t happen again.

Omg.
If this is real...!
Ok, so I think you should accept you missed the boat and that's on you.
Have a small ceremony to acknowledge the freebie you could have had but didn't, acknowledge your disappointment over the missed opportunity and maybe light a candle.

But suspect the warmth may have gone out of this good will gesture given the economic climate which determined her overheads and financial footing at the time has likely altered beyond all recognition (maybe considering this will help you let go and move on). 😁

I don’t like this advice. I want my free stay.

Is the hotel still owned by the same people?

Serencwtch · 17/05/2024 19:35

This has got to be a reverse.

Yes, it’s a big chain of venues.

It’s not, I’m obviously just a CF.

A chain? Then go for it! They can only say no.

"Hi, I had a terrible stay a decade ago and was gifted a complimentary three night stay in recompense. Unfortunately I was kidnapped and kept prisoner for the last 9 years, so I've not been able to take your organisation up in the offer, but I'd like to now whilst I enjoy my new found freedom.. I realise my request is unusual, but I hope you can accept it due to the unusual circumstances."

Seriously OP, there is no way to stop it being a CF request, because it is a CF request.

Genius response.

pasturesgreen · 17/05/2024 19:39

Horrendously cringeworthy to get back in touch after 10 years to try and claim a freebie, but if you feel you can survive the embarrassment, by all means go ahead and report back with the answer for our enjoyment.

PiggieWig · 17/05/2024 19:39

I think you’ve left it a bit late

AgnesX · 17/05/2024 19:40

If you've not returned in the last 10 years I can't imagine that they'll entertain you. After all that's the main purpose of making you the offer (repeat business)

That said, if you don't ask you don't get.

Twattles · 17/05/2024 19:40

Just reply to the email asking to book it and make no mention of the original date. They can only say no.

ElsieandMavis · 17/05/2024 19:40

I think most of you are just jealous that I’ve got a freebie ….

what @LookAtThatCritter said. There’s no end date and time does fly by - Harmon asking but if they say no, then I’d take it on the chin.
