Our lovely FTB 🙄have requested wheelie bins be included after generous discount… many unreasonable requests met!

AIBU to leave dead nan ashes under the floorboards & take the wheel bins as a summer plunge pool for the kids 🫣

My rubbish, recycling & food bins are provided by the council.

I have to pay an annual subscription for my garden waste bin so I cancelled that.
I'm assuming they took the green bin away after I moved out.

Not necessarily! In our area they insist on delivering a new garden waste bin with each new subscription, even if there is already a bin at the property. When we moved (just next door, long story!) we left our garden waste bin at old house for new owners. They set up new subscription and, despite telling the council they didn't need a bin they insisted on sending one as the system automatically orders one and they couldn't override it. So they now have two bins.

Our new house was new build and as such the council delivered a full set of new bins. Including a garden waste bin. We then set up a garden waste subscription and another bin was duly delivered. Come time for renewal the next year I was a bit slow off the mark and missed the cut off date. The only option was to set up a new subscription. Bin number 3 was duly delivered. Some months later we noticed the bin hadn't been emptied on the usual day. After some investigation the council discovered the subscription had been cancelled in error. They re-set up the account. Another bin was then delivered, leaving us with a grand total of four!

Luckily we don't pay any extra for all these bins, you pay the same annual fee whether it's a new subscription or a renewal. Massive waste of money for the council though!

I live in dread of missing the deadline for the next renewal in case yet another bin comes winging our way - we are running out of garden space! Grin

Two really weird things about this thread.

  1. The OP even considering taking the bins with her.
  2. Someone saying "YABU for using the word 'nan'".

Got to love Mumsnet, the batshittery never disappoints 🤣

Lightbulbs and loo seat on the packing list!

We're not in the Netherlands where everything is removed. You should leave the bins, light fixtures etc. It is very unusual to consider taking the bins in the first place.

Oaktree55 · 17/05/2024 13:04

Surely the Council provides bins so yes I’d expect them to remain at the property

Not unreasonable to ask if bins can be left. How many people would want to be moving their dirty old bins around? Our buyers asked for the fridge/washer which we agreed to. Saves everyone some hassle. Not much money compared to the cost of the house.

In the current market it’s also pretty normal for a house price to be discounted.

I don’t really know why you’re upset.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 17/05/2024 12:40

Unless of course you live in an area, like I do, where you have to buy your own. Then your bin does, in fact, belong to you.

I would leave it if I moved, though!

To a PP, yes it's a Tory stronghold. You should see the price list for bulky waste collection! I can understand why people fly tip if they can't afford it. I think you have to pay at the council tip now, too.

in my area you have to purchase your wheels bins - they aren't cheap either - but still they have the council stamp stating property of council and you are supposed to leave them at the property when you leave, however you leave

Lifeomars · 17/05/2024 13:12

i was under the impression that wheelie bins are the property of the local authority, they certainly are where I live, it says so on the lids. This is from the council's website:

All wheelie bins remain the property of the Council. However, whilst you are using the bin, we encourage you to write your house number/address on it – there is a dedicated space provided for this.

Rosscameasdoody · 17/05/2024 13:13

Moved home several times in the last few years. Never once taken the wheelie bins. Is this a wind up ? They don’t belong to you anyway, they belong to the council.

Zimunya · 17/05/2024 13:14

@Sellthishousetorhosecunts - just wanted to wish you peace and happiness in your new home. Yes, on the face of it, it is unreasonable to take the bins, but I think lots of posters are forgetting the complete stress and trauma of selling a house, especillay when your buyers are CFERs who try every singly thing to drive the price down.

Homesweethome23 · 17/05/2024 13:15

If they are council wheelie bins then they stay if they are personal wheelie bins bought by you then you take them.

TorroFerney · 17/05/2024 13:15

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 17/05/2024 07:32

Let me blow your mind! You are incorrect!

Some councils charge for bins or you buy them from Amazon.

Councils differ in their policies and procedures!

Slightly off tangent but one our three bins broke and they came round to see if they could fix it, not worth it so we got a new one free. Was impressed with the speed they came round and just getting a new one.

On a practical note, If you do take them they may not be the right ones for your area, we have three, the main rubbish bin is a lot slimmer than the next county along as we get a weekly rubbish collection and I think they are fortnightly.

Trunkybum · 17/05/2024 13:19

I'm truly baffled how some people here seem to not understand that not all councils provide wheelie bins, free or otherwise.

Until very recently, Cornwall council did not provide any type of bin. You just had to put your rubbish out however you wanted. We had a dustbin but lots of people just shove their bags on the street with a cover over the top to stop seagulls.

So if you wanted a wheelie bin, you had to by your own from B&Q or wherever, the council were nothing to do with it. Therefore, if you've spent £50 on a bin, you'd not be unreasonable for taking it with you.

So just to reiterate, depending on where you live, the wheelie bin might be NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BLOODY COUNCIL.

Also, to the person who said OP was being unreasonable for saying "nan", WTF?

Coalfacebigtits · 17/05/2024 13:20

In my area wheelie bins are very controversial. If your have one it will be emptied, but you’re only allowed one if the council decide you’re on one of the allocated wheelie bin streets. Everyone wants one , because of rats, but if you don’t have a council issue one , it won’t be emptied.
Therefore council issued wheelie bins are like gold dust and are often stolen in the dead of night, and everyone goes to great lengths to make their bin identifiable.
I totally get the request !!

maddiemookins16mum · 17/05/2024 13:25

I’ve never take bins with me.

Alittlefrustrated · 17/05/2024 13:26

Did you buy them independently of the council OP? If not, despite "buying" them, they belong to the council, not you, and they must be left. Do the buyers feel they need to state specifics because you have been...... awkward? I hope you are joking re loo seats and light bulbs. That would just be mean.

Erdinger · 17/05/2024 13:27

Relocate89 · 16/05/2024 23:17

Do people take wheelie bins with them?!

None that I know of

CarolinaInTheMorning · 17/05/2024 13:29

Paperthin · 16/05/2024 23:19

NOBODY takes their wheels bins OP, not in the UK anyway.

Not in my part of the US, either. They are supplied by the county.

caringcarer · 17/05/2024 13:30

LittleGreenDragons · 16/05/2024 23:17

The wheelie bins stay with the property. They aren't yours, they belong to the council. Where do you do live if you believe they go with you?

This. Nobody takes Wheely bins with them.

ThreeTescoBags · 17/05/2024 13:32

If you are going you leave your nan then you'd be doubly unreasonable to take the bin and deprive them of somewhere to empty the bag once they're done hoovering her up.

JustMarriedBecca · 17/05/2024 13:33

Wheelieusefulbinlover · 16/05/2024 23:19

Not every council provides wheelie bins for free. Mine doesn't, we had to order ours for £50 each! I paid for them, they're mine to take with me like my garden furniture

We have to pay £112 to USE the bins extra on top of Council tax as we have extra green bins for garden waste but the bins belong to the Council.

Wheelieusefulbinlover · 17/05/2024 13:37

Brawcolli · 17/05/2024 12:41

What’s wrong with the word nan?

This is mumsnet, you're meant to call her grandmama 🙄

Towerofsong · 17/05/2024 13:44

WearyAuldWumman · 16/05/2024 23:23

Ah. Didn't know that.

In my area, your council tax pays for them.

In my area, the council provides them for the property, but if you lose or break one you can be charged for a replacement.

daffodilandtulip · 17/05/2024 13:49

We pay for ours and I still wouldn't want to put them on the removal van with all my things!

Londonrach1 · 17/05/2024 13:52

The bins stay in the property. I can't image why you want to take them with you. Yabu
