To think Universal Credit are a bunch of cunts

StarbucksStraw · 16/05/2024 21:28

I work full time but also claim Universal Credit.

They have awarded me £0 this month because two of my wages have fallen within one assessment period therefore to them, it looks like I have earned twice as much.

This happens several times a year because of how my wages are paid, each time I have to raise a dispute, they then "move" one lot of wages to a different assessment period and adjust my statement and pay me the outstanding amount. This is usually sorted within a few days but sometimes takes longer.

This time my payment is nearly three weeks overdue. I have no money left, all of my wages have been spent on rent, direct debits etc. Every time I ask them for an update I get fuck all.

How can they leave someone in this situation? They told me to ask the local authority for help but I've had no luck.

They already have the information from HMRC/ my employer showing when I was paid and how much. What the actual fuck do the expect people to do? I can't run my car to get to work on fresh air and I doubt my son wants to live off whatever stale shite is left in the cupboard for the next fuck knows how long.

I don't know what I'm hoping for from this post... anyone else had success in getting them to hurry up?

Let me guess. You are going to talk about how much tax you pay and we should be grateful to you for it? That easy to get a better job.

I am sure OP pays tax.

Ilovemycatalot · 17/05/2024 10:40

I’m a nursery worker on just over minimum wage. I get universal credit.
If I and others like me left our jobs for better paid roles who would look after your children so iall these higher earners could go to work?
Every job is valuable in its own way and we need ppl doing all sorts of roles for a functioning society. Sadly a lot of jobs that are vital to society are disgustingly low paid.

What’s insulting is that the op calls everyone doing THEIR job a ‘bunch of cunts’

seriously, her attitude is disgusting.

But that isn't what you wrote about.

I bet you 99% of people claiming UC would rather just get paid enough to live on by their employer.

Only 38% of UC claimants work, so i very much doubt your 99% figure is accurate.

OK, 99% of that 38% then.

Honestly, the OP is rude and horrible. Her sense of entitlement is disgraceful and her language towards others appalling.

They left me with no money for 7 months. And took them over 2 years to sort housing payments. UC is an utter joke.

LauderSyme · 17/05/2024 11:21

i claim UC and other benefits for my disabled child. I also work.

Amongst all the very fair negative points made here by UC claimants, I think it is worth acknowledging that we are very lucky to live in a country with a welfare safety net.

Billions of people don't and if they can't earn it or beg for it, they go without.

Think you might need to Google what irony means.

WithACatLikeTread · 17/05/2024 11:31

Yes she is rude but I can understand her annoyance even if it should be directed at her employer.

frankentall · 17/05/2024 11:36

Does it really count as rude if not actively directed to individuals? I'd be concerned if she was calling them cunts to their faces but I assume she isn't.

What you loose one month will make up for it the following month don’t see the problem here

When people are living month to month it's often a struggle making it to end end of the month its all.very well sitting g there saying it's not a problem as it will be made up next month but that doesn't help.this month when people are struggling
Honestly some posters have no idea .

Well exactly for all those saying just get a better paid job ,we would all be up shit cheek if nobody was doing low paid/minimum wage jobs .

What do you imagine would happen if everyone just got a better job?

peakygold · 17/05/2024 12:24

Is there a local foodbank who could help you out in crisis? Maybe a local 'social credit' scheme or similar could lend you some money to tide you over? A foodbank would signpost you to more help too. YANBU. I truly believe they train civil servants to be cunty.

Elebag · 17/05/2024 12:25

If everyone got a better paid job who is going to be cleaning the streets, working at the council, hospital, retail, care jobs in large towns and cities? Unless maybe rents are slashed by 50%, that might work?

There's a sort of wilfull ignorance in the failure to apperciate that someone can be in a position where they have so little spare income that non-payment of something leaves them destitute. And they have no idea what stress and panic it can cause.

I once didn't get paid as promised in my first month in a new job, because of a typo in my start date. I felt sick when I found out my salary hadn't been paid, and my mortgage and all my other standing orders were due to be paid the following day. When payroll told me that the system showed I wasn't going to start till a month after I actually had, and it couldn't be sorted out for a month, I thought I was going to faint. I was in an absolute panic. I had no money and didn't even think I had enough petrol in my car to get home. There was no way I was capable of being rational, I was so stressed out.

Thankfully, my lovely (and very assertive) boss went on the warpath, got them to make an emergency advance payment, so that I had money for the next few days and got an agreement that they would reimburse any bank charges I incurred. OP hasn't got a lovely boss who can put things right, and she's in the shit.

Some people lack the empathy to grasp the impact something like this can have, and prefer to punch down than punch up. I think they like the superior feeling it gives them.

I think the OP may realise now that, while UC has many faults, the cock-up here is with the way the pay date is shown on the employer's RTI return. They can input the pay date as the last day of the month and still pay on the last Friday of the month.

LiterallyOnFire · 17/05/2024 12:54

@LiterallyOnFire What a nasty ignorant ageist attitude

Why @oldsu ?

Do you consider blu-rinse to be an age-specific characterisation.

Maybe you're right, I've never heard it used that way. I was just agreeing with the "conservative matrons" comment that I quoted. Which was what I meant by it. So it was politically intended, not a comment on age.

Quite honestly all the "save to cover it", "get a better job" brigade do sound clueless and ossified, but I don't think it's an age or generational thing. It's more a "don't look past the end if your nose" issue.

I absolutely would never say it directly to an individual, and I've been nothing but polite when actually engaging with UC staff - obviously I know that this situation isn't within their personal control, and I'm sure most people who read my post know that it wasn't directed personally at any UC staff, and more at the system in general which is just endlessly frustrating to deal with.

It's allowed on here, MN is renowned for being sweary, and no-one's forcing you to read it.

If the word "cunt" is problematic for you, I'm sure there are other forums where the language may be more to your liking.

It’s not necessary to use that language to get your points and opinions across!

Bignanna · 17/05/2024 13:34

It's not necessary for you to come on and whinge and berate someone just because you don't like their choice of words, but here we are.

OP posts:
HintofVintagePink · 17/05/2024 13:41

OP have you approached your employer to ask about options to tide you over whilst you try and change the payment date with UC?

This will just keep happening and it looks like you are the only one who can sort it out.
