office wear

I work in an office and the majority of the peole wear casual and by that I mean jeans and t shirts and trainers. I always dress smart for work. Some who have tatoos wear short sleeves and show huge tattoos down each arm. I do not think that is appropriate for the office. I really wish i worked for a company who has a strict dress code wehre the women have to wear smart trousers and jackets and dresses and skirts and the men have to wear shirts and trousers and maybe a suit. I could not go to work looking sloppy even if there is no dress code

We have dress for your day, so if want to be casual you can and if need to be formal you can

Flute56 · 16/05/2024 19:21

If you go to your local Sainsburys and see the managers they are always wearing a suit

And so?

i know people have tatoos but cover them up at work. I know someone who works in an office and she was told to wear very smart casual. No jeans no trainers. When I was flat sharing many years ago my flat mate worked in the insurance industry and had to wear tights no bare legs. Also if you go into the ctity of London and see what the men wear. Most of tem are in suits with cuflinks and ties. . In fact I walked past a bar after work and two men were wearing pin striped suits

I would be more interested that someone could spell and use correct grammar Op. Just a thought...

I'm not a manager in Sainsbury's though?

edwinbear · 16/05/2024 19:34

I work on a bank trading floor. 20 years ago, men & women wore suits every day. Things have changed and smart casual in the office is fine, dress down on Fridays if you’re not WFH. Client meetings would still be a suit for the men, smart dress/blouse/skirt/trousers for women. Clients are rarely in suits these days and ties for men are unusual. The quality of your work is considered far more important than the quality of your wardrobe.

So what?

And once again, if you want to work somewhere where you are forced to wear a suit, you can do that.

What do you actually do for a living?

PineappleBanana · 16/05/2024 19:35

I work for a very famous institution that you would think would have a very smart dress code. I bought a capsule corporate wardrobe before starting. Everyone wears jeans, including C-Suite (unless they’re doing TV interviews). It’s the modern world.

Marblessolveeverything · 16/05/2024 19:37

The management of Sainsbury's are customer facing in an environment of uniforms, hardly comparable.

I don't understand why on earth someone's clothing is any of your business or concern.

Professionalism is displayed by your actions and output not outfit.

If you go to your local Sainsburys and see the managers they are always wearing a suit

Get a job there then, problem sorted.

DottieMoon · 16/05/2024 19:39

You sound completely ridiculous. Why does in matter what people wear to do their job. The world has moved on but unfortunately not everyone.

Londonscallingme · 16/05/2024 19:40

Surely there is a clear solution to your problem…. Go and work somewhere else?

They wear a fleece in my local Sainsbury's. I won't shop there again until they raise their standards!

We have this too. If you have a rare client meeting you'd dress in business wear. The rest of the time there's no difference in what I wear to the office or at home.

I also remember some bollocks about 'bring your authentic self to work'. Which I think I was about wearing whatever you feel comfortable with, whether that be a hijab or a man in a skirt.

so apply for jobs at those sorts of companies.
The rest of us will carry on as we are

TheRealSlimShandy · 16/05/2024 19:49

DH works for a law firm and wears <gasp> shorts when it’s warm.
I run my own business and my only work wear rule is that you cannot wear strapless tops on Zoom calls (because it basically looks like you’re naked and is therefore distracting).

PotatoPudding · 16/05/2024 19:51

So go and work for a law firm or funeral director.

I’ve worn joggers and a hoodie to the office all week to my job as a finance manager. It’s 2024; you’re the only person who cares what people are wearing to work. I suppose you disagree with hybrid and WFH too.

A cheap nasty polyester uniform suit. Why is that something to aspire to?

Personally, I think jeans and trainers are fine, but jogging bottoms and football shirts are not, but that’s just personal preference.

rainbowbee · 16/05/2024 20:04

Our actual boss wears jeans and holey vests from Primark, has pink hair and loads of tattoos. We have a guy who wears a suit, another guy who likes jeans and a polo. One lady likes dresses, heels, and piles of make up. Another lady channels her inner swamp witch. I'm a safe jeans shirt and blazer type with some bag lady moments. For me, it doesn't matter if you're decently covered and don't smell.

I've literally just got home from the City and saw no cufflinks or pin-striped suits. Some normal suits, mostly just chinos and shirts. Very few ties.

I think you're on the wind-up, OP. But by all means, if what colleagues wear is so important to you there are a few stuffy companies still insisting on suited and booted - go work for one!

SocksAndTheCity · 16/05/2024 20:16

I live (and work) in the City, and a tie is a rare event nowadays, although shirts and jackets are still worn in the more formal places.

I haven't seen a woman wearing heels for years. Maybe you should apply for the Apprentice OP? They like a bit of power dressing and you can even match your bag to your shoes without anybody saying anything 😀

PotatoPudding · 16/05/2024 20:19

I used to cringe at the women in my office wearing cheap polyester trousers and blouses with cheap faux leather shoes that made their feet stink. I honestly think people look so much nicer in offices now they can actually wear what they want.

cherish123 · 16/05/2024 20:20

I agree completely.
Standards have slipped.
It used to be no visible tattoos in one office I worked in.

hurlyburlygirly · 16/05/2024 20:25

We're a professional organisation where the md wears jeans. The only time I've needed to get involved recently was when someone wore what looked very like pyjama bottoms to work.

I regularly wear trainers. I love the relaxed code and would not want to go back to uncomfortable, expensive suits and heels
