Nothing much in there is a pound and they are stocking clothing etc?
Do they need a name change?
Misleading.

This rather like the $2 shops in Australia, which are now called variety shops. People still call them $2 shops though, in the same way video stores - when they existed - were so called even though they almost exclusively sold DVDs.

I was shocked when I couldn't buy a pair of boots in Boots, and today I discovered that Amazon aren't based in the jungle, Bloody Cheek!

And, and, have you ever tried to get a room, for even one night, in Hotel Chocolat? Well don't bother, they gave me short shrift when I enquired, fobbed me off with a small sample chocolate (which was very nice, by the way).

But everything there does cost £5, does it not?

Not any more. Not for a while.

Here's a tip - don't bother asking for a Lamb Madras in Currys!

I always thought it was kind of a daft name.

Then again, Australia has the reject shop and crazy clarks.

Gdn1 · 15/05/2024 06:17

Some of the larger Poundlands are called Poundland Plus.

When I lived in Hounslow they had a Poundland, a 99p shop and a 98p shop all battling in out in the High St. I wonder what they’re called now?

I miss the 99p shop. Everything WAS 99p

The Poundland near me was a 99p shop and was much better.

I used to get cheap reading glasses for £1 which were great for leaving around the house.

Haven't been in for over a year now as last time I went in their hardware section was about three feet wide, and they seem to have reduced the section of glasses and are mainly women's style (I'm a bloke and wouldn't wear them even if giving them away Grin )

I thought this was going to be about how it sounds like a euphemism for a sex shop, but your point is also valid

ExhaustedHousewife · 15/05/2024 08:00

Some of these alternative names 😂

Davros · 15/05/2024 09:51

How about YeOldeGuineauLand

Along with 50 shops selling pots of hot sweetcorn and Peruvian pan pipes. Grin
