Nothing much in there is a pound and they are stocking clothing etc?
Do they need a name change?
Misleading.

I guess Iceland don't just sell frozen goods

No, but Iceland is mainly frozen goods. The freezers take up about 75% of the shop floor. The only reason they sell eggs, milk and bread etc is to keep people in the shop instead of taking their custom elsewhere for non frozen essentials. Poundland isn’t mainly £1 goods anymore.

Weil it’s not called One Pound Land is it?

x2boys · 14/05/2024 21:42

Quite cheap but not really a pound shop anymore ?

yumyumyumy · 14/05/2024 21:42

Cheapshit

Needmorelego · 14/05/2024 21:45

All their "own brand" stuff is being rebranded under the Pepco name.
The company name is apparently Pepco now.
I reckon the shop name will change soon.
I like a lot of their new Pepco home products. Better quality.
(Apparently the Pepco name is already used in several East European countries)

Also Carphone Warehouse. We're some way past having phones you can't take out a car, and they're not sold from warehouses.

Why are you picking on Poundland, when everything5pounds exists...

But everything there does cost £5, does it not?

thefattwin · 14/05/2024 22:13

The thing is they're trying to align themselves with home bargains/ range / b&m / rip wilkos more price wise but they still sell absolute crap. I mean I know they all do but the toys and house hold bits tend to be especially inferior tat. When it was a £1 it was understandable but I don't go in any more.

Mumofyellows · 14/05/2024 22:14

In my hometown back in the 90's there was a shop called Annie's 50p bazaar which then changed to 55p, 60p, 65p and so on over the years, it was the most random little shop and I had forgotten all about it til this thread!

Nope

Needmorelego · 14/05/2024 22:18

@thefattwin I have found the quality of homewares, DIY stuff and stationary etc has improved since it's been rebranded. It's definitely better.
The toys are still a bit rubbish. The thing is if a toy costs £1 is will be crap. They do seem to be starting to get better quality bits in so I'm happy to pay more. I think the really crappy quality toys will gradually disappear.

Katemax82 · 14/05/2024 22:29

Fiverland

CranfordScones · 14/05/2024 22:48

Change the name to Woolworths - it's what many of them used to be called.

I miss the 99p shop. Everything WAS 99p

Yes! I loved the 99p shop, it was much better than Poundland, nicer stuff and everything really was 99p!

HighOnMaiden · 14/05/2024 23:11

Stopped going in a while ago. The joke used to be asking the assistants how much everything was, when now that’s what you genuinely have to do.

it also became a bit of a con, selling smaller packs for a pound when they were much better value in other stores.

Davros · 14/05/2024 23:29

I drove past our nearest Poundland today around 11.30am and it was shut. I wondered if it had gone bust

I guess Iceland don't just sell frozen goods

....and Farmfoods most definitely doesn't just sell food from farms.
That said, whoever invented the name Poundland didn't really consider inflation.

Poundstretcher do that too, and they always try to sell me more 'special offer' stuff at the till.
If I wanted 50 'rip as soon as you look at them bin bags' I would have picked them up on the way round....

Starlightstarbright3 · 14/05/2024 23:58

Mostly more than a Poundland .

once was a Poundland

StellaGibson2022 · 15/05/2024 00:00

It’s rubbish now - I wonder who actually goes there now. Ours is half empty.

My DC also loves pointing out everything that isnt a pound!

SergeantDawkins · 15/05/2024 00:02

I went to one today, I don’t think anything I bought was a pound. Very cheap still, but not as cheap as it once was when things were actually £1. Even the sweets were £1.25.
Maybe they should call it “you don’t get much for a pound, land”
