If you own a ranger rover

Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

@NorthUtsireSouthUtsire if you normally get given a scarf I’d start asking questions about why there has been such a substantial upgrade in the present giving (unless it was a big birthday in which case it might be fine ;)

ginasevern · 13/05/2024 16:46

Unless you're a farmer or something similar you will look like a complete and utter tosser. But I guess if the cap fits.

TizerorFizz · 13/05/2024 16:47

Why do people think Range Rover owners haven't saved! We have saved. Lots. Pensions all over the place. I don't want a big RR but my Disco is fine and I think an Evoque is just about right. The large RR is a prestige car. Of course it costs money to run. Most cars like this do but the warranty is pretty good. We don't expect the Evoque to get to an age where there's an issue with it.

People can say it’s a knob’s car etc but having done a shit load of miles when we had ours I’m ok with people thinking whatever they want. I’m quite happy to be the knob driving an armchair with heated massage seats.

@ttcat37 I had massage seats in a car and it felt like being pressed up against two ferrets fighting in a bag. It also put me in mind of being in Australia on a friends farm and observing a friend’s horrible plastic sofa which started moving about like a massaging car seat - it turned out to be a massive fuck-off snake living in its interior. You may be a happy knob in your heated squirming seat but I think they’re a luxury too far.

WalkingonWheels · 13/05/2024 17:13

They're known as Chav-Mobiles round here. And as a disabled person, it's really frustrating because they are often found using disabled spaces with no blue badge. I'd judge someone who drove one, sorry.

RubberyChicken · 13/05/2024 17:16

A RR isn't that much wider than a Ford Focus, obviously much taller

I used to have (an old one). Loved it - I could get 11 bales of hay and three dogs in it at the same time! Plus it was like driving an armchair 😂

Is that not what Land Rovers are for?

Not really anymore. Now the brand is all about “modern luxury” also being peerless as no other car can compare 😉

Not mines but work had a velar which had shiatsu massage seats. I was indeed a happy knob. I was gutted when they got the new one and it just has heat: lots of adjustable support.

HollaHolla · 13/05/2024 17:45

Interestingly, I was test driving small, older cars, with a relative at the weekend. The salesman said about 70% of the prestige cars they sell are on the lease deals/finance. The people who buy outright usually come in with up to £20-£25k, and get something 2+ years old. (I spend £11k on a 3 year old car, earlier this year...) We asked him what he does - buys outright every time. 💁

DagnabbitDeputyDawg · 13/05/2024 17:47

If you dream of owning a Range Rover, I presume the first thing you will do with it is park it across someone's drive or on the zig-zags in front of a school.

Just like people seem to dream of owning a BMW just so they never have to use their indicators, my experience of Range Rover drivers is that they must dream of obstructing as many other road users as possible.

Oh, and will you be driving without insurance? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/land-rover/land-rovers-thefts-expensive-insurance/

How Range Rovers became virtually uninsurable

Thefts of the car have risen so much that affordable insurance is just not possible

From the side it's very apparent why these things are such a danger. A child is going to be hit right in the torso (you know, the bit protecting vital organs) and will be pushed under the Range Rover. Get hit by the Ford Focus on the other hand, the kid's lower body is hit and they end up on the bonnet - a far safer place than under the car.

You can't get proper ones any more. The classic Defender (my sheep-farming uncle had a succession of these) has been discontinued and replaced with a luxury model. Farmers these days buy a Japanese-built pickup for half of the cost of a new Defender.

It was more in reply to the comments about how wide they are and not fitting into carparks.
I thought it very common knowledge they will cause worse injuires if you get hit by one, but thank you for highlighting it

jeaux90 · 13/05/2024 18:41

Bloody love my RR. I took a bank loan which was cheaper than the dealer financing by a long shot.

Never had any issues with it and they just sent me a free faraday pouch.

TizerorFizz · 13/05/2024 19:30

60% of all new car sales are suvs. If the Rangy doesn't get you, the Toyota Land Cruiser will. Cars have been getting bigger but the Range Rover is 5star Euro NCAP rating and the pedestrian rating is way better than a host of other family cars!

He can longer drive following stoke so also think he didn't want to climb in to my Audi TT any longer and fancied a more comfortable chauffeur drive .. (but tell myself it was pure love 🤣)

Scrumbleton · 13/05/2024 20:09

i have had an Evoque for 6 years - bought new - outright - only needed tyres and brake pads - twice which is a lot for under 50k miles butbi do a LOT of off road driving which is hard on brakes and tyres. I love my car - i think the judges on here are TWATs

OneTC · 13/05/2024 20:30

The explosion of them and similar vehicles in the countryside was caused by people moving from London and believing having one is part of the rural cosplay, luxury vehicles were not a common sight growing up

Actually driving in the countryside used to be loads more pleasant before people started braving the expedition to their out of town Sainsbury's in their definitely not built for single lane vehicles. Got stuck a while ago behind 2 that couldn't pass each other even at a passing point, one had to reverse right back down to a wider one 🫣

RR and SUVs aren't the only ones guilty of this though, all cars are much wider than ever, but SUVs are the worst example

Lonelycrab · 13/05/2024 20:54

Well I guess one advantage of owning a RR is that they also have their own, personal motorway speed limit of 90mph as opposed to us plebs limited to 70😁

JMKid · 13/05/2024 21:05

Don’t be a wanker tanka driver. It’s only a certain person where I live that have them, all fake looking and pretentious!

redastherose · 13/05/2024 22:48

I used to own one, it was second hand Range Rover Vogue and such a lovely car to drive, extremely comfortable and fabulous room inside. Unfortunately, as PP said it cost a fortune to keep running but I did own it outright. I think it cost £36k when I bought it.

Yesfrepp · 13/05/2024 22:52

well it’s safe to say I’ve been largely put off my dream car after reading all this!!! 😅
