Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

We had one a few years ago, my dh has had 2. We used to joke with other RR owners about being in the £500 club. Meaning everytime it goes into the garage it costs £500. The new ones are in the £1000 club for the same reason.

A friend of mine had one, he runs his own million pound company and even he said it was too expensive to run so bought himself a Porsche suv as it was cheaper Confused

Eyesopenwideawake · 13/05/2024 14:09

@Peachy2005 kind of you to type all that out but I’ve no intention of buying one. Sold mine in 2016 and currently have a boring, but reliable, Freelander as our farm car.

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 13/05/2024 14:16

Sorry to jump on this thread of gleeful RR bashing but for those of you in the know (ie owners) do the same reliability and service issues also apply to Discovery 5? We are about to buy a 2017 model but all this talk of reliability is worrying me!

Prelapsarianhag · 13/05/2024 14:17

Knob's car.

rhubarbcrumblez · 13/05/2024 14:19

They're so tacky, and as such assume they're all on finance. Sorry.

Betterifido · 13/05/2024 14:20

I only know one person who has one, it’s financed and the monthly prices are sky high as well!

RandomButtons · 13/05/2024 14:28

They are butt ugly and break down constantly. Can’t understand the appeal myself.

My cousin makes a really good living fixing them, they break down all the time.

Sorry @Eyesopenwideawake

Typed @ op and it filled you in instead of the actual OP 😂

TizerorFizz · 13/05/2024 14:57

@RandomButtons
They don't break down all the time. We don't have a Disco 5 (mainly because I prefer a split rear door) but my Disco 4 has never broken down. Most people posting have never owned one! I think if you are ok with the rear door, go for it. It's 7 years old and you should expect some maintenance. My Disco 4 is older but it sails over muddy terrain, doesn't worry about floods and has hill descent control. You get a lot of car for the money. Plus the extra seats - which we have. It's a tremendous workhorse and very good on the road as well as off it. It's still one of the best off road cars ever.

I'm probably getting a new Evoque hybrid next year. We will keep the Disco but the Mini hybrid will go back. The new one doesn't look as nice as the Evoque. We live in the country and like to get out and about.

We love our cars and don't need to worry about money. We've a few other cars and they are part of what we enjoy about life. I've had Bmwx5s, Range Rovers and an Evoque as well as 2 Discos and DH has Porsche Macan at the moment. That's a truly great car.

Wow - so I’ve potentially got another 10 years with the old girl! I’m glad actually - although my teenage sons are getting increasingly embarrassed to be seen in it! Yes, I always thought something catastrophic happened after reaching 100k miles - so glad to hear it is not the case.

Keep her serviced regularly, oil and filters once a year with someone trusted and it’ll go a long way to keep her going for a long time yet.

Your teenage sons get to be embarrassed only when they can afford to buy and run something shiny and new-until then mouths zipped 😆. I have a 10 year old car at the moment, she’s low mileage at only 70k but I intend to keep her until she dies. I’ve had all sorts in the past though, I once bought a 3 year old Mondeo that had 107k on the clock-it was a beautiful car. And my husbands currently got a 2009 Citroen c5 that’s done 140k and every panel has been bashed, it’s no looker but it’s a bloody strong car. My kids luckily don’t bat an eyelid but they’d be told to walk if they decided to moan 😂.

The people we know with them get them as company cars. OP, have you looked at annual insurance costs? They’re insane. They’re a high-theft car, so insurance is astronomical. Only affordable if the company pays insurance for you, or if you’re super rich.

Why anyone drives these Wanker Panzers is beyond me. People seem to get their self esteem from their car

This made me laugh! So true!

Surely that is just a reflection on the relative desirability of Land Rover and Ford products. Thieves don’t tend to steal stuff they can’t sell on.

It's a reflection of the market for spare parts and the ease of stealing these cars. Cars aren't generally sold on, they are broken up for parts. The reason fiestas are so popular among thieves is because Ford have discontinued the line, so spare parts are becoming increasingly harder to source.

The reason RR/LRs are so popular is because a. they are very easy to steal b. the spare parts market is huge, because of the well documented reliability issues with them.

Soigneur · 13/05/2024 15:43

The first time I saw a Disco 5 was by the side of the M3, with foot-high flames emanating from around the bonnet and the front wheel arches. Incredibly, the driver was still sitting in the driver's seat, on the phone, presumably to the AA. Previous Discos also had a reputation for being a bit burn-y so no change there then.

YouOKHun · 13/05/2024 15:48

I have to agree with everyone who says don’t bother due to unreliability. My neighbour has had three new Range Rovers over the time I’ve had the same 4x4 and they’ve all had a much easier life than my car, yet they have constantly gone wrong and I’m not sure why he didn’t learn his lesson ages ago. And when I say ‘gone wrong’ I mean thousands of pounds in each case as well as irritating snags.

They are actually pretty good off-road but because they are so insanely expensive no one who needs to go off road properly would contemplate buying a RR. So now they are really just status symbols for more successful crack dealers. Too expensive to use for their original purpose and too big to drive around town.

YouOKHun · 13/05/2024 15:51

@Soigneur everyone I know in the motor trade calls the Landrover Discovery the Landrover Recovery.

I was chatting to a police officer apparently a lot of them vanish off to foreign climes. He was telling me the local cinema car park had seen a spate of thefts as it’s likely the owner will be gone for 2 hours + which is enough time to get away and disable tracking systems.

AlexiaH · 13/05/2024 15:52

Friend at work had one on finance, nothing but problems! Have a look into the cost of everyday things on it it’s 🤣 new battery is £100’s as are tyres, does like 20-25 per gallon, road tax is ££££ 🤦🏼‍♀️ Mate get yourself a sweet M3 or an M4 I love driving my other half’s one. If you want a bulbous truck the Cayennes are nicer or even a Gwagon

For high value cars, sure. But a 10 year old Fiesta (the most stolen car in the UK) is getting chopped for parts.

Yeah I meant RRs. Lots go to Asia/ Africa.

I was extremely surprised when my DH bought me an Evoque convertible for my birthday.. (especially as I normally get a scarf !!) .. I absolutely fucking love it ! It was 2 years old when I got it. He bought it outright 20k .. no problems in last 3 years..

ttcat37 · 13/05/2024 16:41

People can say it’s a knob’s car etc but having done a shit load of miles when we had ours I’m ok with people thinking whatever they want. I’m quite happy to be the knob driving an armchair with heated massage seats.

BurnerName1 · 13/05/2024 16:43

I find them a really useful way of flagging 'people I won't get on with'. And yes they do seem to love a blue badge space without actually having a blue badge, the pricks.
