Is it on finance? Just wondering how many people actually buy then outright? They are my dream car and although I could finance a monthly payment I could never buy one outright! How much do you have to earn for that?! I’m on 89k for context

I’ll never for the life of me understand why someone, when buying a car would think:

”What I need is something hugely expensive, horrendously unreliable and also highly likely to get nicked….”🤔

Anyway I thought most farmers drove Toyota and Isuzu these days.

We have one because we live rurally and need to tow. But ours is old. Bought outright but might as well be on finance because it needs so much fixing - and that’s just parts, my husband is a mechanic!

@Roryhon

We have one because we live rurally and need to tow

Land Cruiser, Hilux, Pajero, Patrol, Discovery 2/3/4/, Defender, Toureg V10 diesel, Amarok....

Need I go on?

Range Rover is not the only car available to those who live rurally and need to tow. I should know.

Why buy it then, especially if it is a working tool? I wouldn't own anything which regularly drains that much money from my wallet - I'd rather spend it on experiences or things that enhance my life.

I've never had such frequent use and value out of a warranty as I had with my Range Rover - I was on 1st name terms with local RR assistance man.

Same here. Me and the AA became besties

JacquesHarlow · 13/05/2024 08:33

My favourite thing on this thread are the people who are wringing their hands about the exorbitant running costs, insurance or repair bills, as if it is a kind of public exhibition of their deep pockets.

I just shake my head at the foolishness.

I would never have such low esteem that I 'need' a Range Rover in my life and am prepared to pay 1000s a month in repairs, insurance and leasing costs, just to show everyone I've made it.

They're comfortable as hell, they have a peerless pedigree in terms of Royal Family endorsement and off road credentials, but the people that drive them today are hilarious.

You forgot 'doesn't fit in most car parks, an environmental disaster and just about everyone who sees you driving it will think you're a complete twat'.

It seems to be the car of choice for people like Katie Price, so maybe they appeal to people who think she's someone to look up to instead of being somewhere between the Queen of complete twats and a desperately sad individual with serious mental health problems.

Probably irrelevant, but I just don't understand how people can pay what used to be a house price (and still is in some places) for a vehicle that gets you from A to B1 The most expensive car I have ever bought was £1000, and currently we have a car each, both of which cost us £500 - yes they're old (Dh's still has a tape deck !) but mine, in particular - 2001 - is still going and while it doesn't have anything fancy in it and sometimes is a little bumpy - is still going strong.

I understand that some people need to travel a lot over the year, but still £75 - 100k on a car? I love the look of disdain I get from wankpanzer owners as they overtake me or pull out in front, because they think I am irrelevant and unimportant, I just think 'well, I have £x extra a month than you and am still going in the same direction!
It baffles me

Same. I drive a nice but practical car which serves a purpose. For the record I too could afford a Range Rover lease but would prefer to not spend that much money on something which serves the same purpose as the thing I have. There is definitely a link between ego and car. And I wonder if there is an insecurity there with people thinking the car will give them the importance they crave.

I real a bit sorry for the people who own one because they need it for pulling a horse trailer etc as they've clearly bought it to serve a purpose rather than their ego. The brand has been ruined a bit sadly. Kind of like Burberry.

Forthearsenal · 13/05/2024 08:34

They're revolting, tossers cars indeed. Cannot stand them, speaks volumes if someone needs one for show...

Nigellasstickytoffeepudding · 13/05/2024 08:36

What's the difference between a range rover and a hedgehog?

We had on - owned outright.

Just traded it aft era insurance went up ridiculously high and the annual warranty extension was £1500/

We loved it but not that much

ScottishScouser · 13/05/2024 08:43

In our defence, we do live in the highlands and often get snowed in.

Peacelily001 · 13/05/2024 08:57

They’re very common where I live. Almost as popular as Fiestas used to be.
Driven either by TOWIE types or working young people still living at home with no outgoings.
There are loads of cars I’d rather own over a RR.

quietpink · 13/05/2024 09:02

Love mine
Never had a problem

RedPony1 · 13/05/2024 09:05

I like them!! Mostly because i like that it pisses people off when people have them 😂

I don't have one, we picked a VW Amarok for our tow car but if i had the extra money, i'd have one in a heart beat, they are so nice to drive and DP is a mechanic so we don't have to worry about labour rates 😂

Willyoujustbequiet · 13/05/2024 09:28

Deathbyfluffy · 13/05/2024 08:09

They’ll be ‘proper’ Land Rovers and Range Rovers - not the Evoque etc which is just an imitation with all the unreliability of the real thing.

Yes that's true.

Alltheshoes74 · 13/05/2024 09:37

Had one, sold it and bought a Merc 4x4 - far more reliable and can insure it, the boot space is great too. I bought it outright

TallulahBetty · 13/05/2024 09:38

Chelsea Tractors

FlameGrilledSquirrel · 13/05/2024 09:43

Indicators seem to be even more optional than the DeutscheTwattenPanzers on the damned things.

Do seem to be the obnoxious road users vehicle of choice at the moment.

twoforj0y · 13/05/2024 09:51

Where I am in rural ireland, there are a lot of Ford Rangers and other pick-up style trucks that are driven. I lived in England a long time and they are definitely more common in the roads in the UK.

I've always had cars by LR but not the RR. I used to tow my horses and they are great towers.

Test drove the Evoke, god it's lovely to drive! But I went for a Discovery Sport, it's less fancy but it's a fantastic car for country roads and huge boot space for kids bikes etc.

I don't understand the hate!

bluedomino · 13/05/2024 09:59

Don't forget to put a private number plate on your Range Rover too. That way everyone will know you definitely are a total w*nker.

usernother · 13/05/2024 09:59

Mine was a birthday present. I love it because it's so comfortable and nice to drive but it eats fuel and insurance is high.

Zanatdy · 13/05/2024 09:59

They are so expensive to insure, so I’d never get one

Polishedshoesalways · 13/05/2024 10:01

I couldn’t do without mine. Smooth, safe in all weathers. We live rurally so would be cut off without one in mid winter. My dc and dogs are safe. We haven’t had any issues with insurance or repairs. It’s been pretty perfect and consistent. Drive across France and Italy without a hitch. £90k well spent.

Duvetdweller · 12/05/2024 21:55

It won’t be your dream car after you get one and it’s never out of the bloody garage

Yes, DH had a Range Rover Sport (on lease) the build quality was so poor, he was pleased to see the back of it.

Whammyammy · 13/05/2024 10:02

RRs are ugly, breakdown all the time and one of the easiest cars to steal apparently.
They are no longer the status symbol they once were

I would honestly be embarrassed to drive one.
