Preface: I’m pregnant and very hormonal so there’s a chance I’m being sensitive, please tell me if so!

DH was on his way to work earlier. I called through to the kitchen, ‘oh, I forgot to take the bin out, would you mind?’

He replied, ‘yeah, don’t worry, already on it’. I went into the kitchen to get my glass of water as he was putting the liner out the bin and I said, ‘I’ve just been shoving the stuff down all day, hope it wasn’t too messy’

He smiled and just said ‘I’ll add it to the divorce list’

He was smiling/laughing while saying it but neither of us has ever joked about divorce before or anything like it. He does always banter about other things as he’s that kind of person who doesn’t take himself too seriously but it really caught me off guard. I asked him why he said it and he hugged me and said he was joking and sorry for the bad joke.

AIBU to still think it was weird to say?

Very outing... however I once got upset because my hormones needed to be annoyed but I couldn't find anything to be upset about. So in my desperation I called my friend moaning how Mr bloody perfect has not done anything to annoy me. I then got worked up cos she said 'isn't that a good thing'
In that moment I hated him and her.
He then popped his head through the door saying 'I don't fancy cooking tonight, fancy a chinese' (my fave takeout'
Never hated him so much!
I laugh about it now. He 10 years on is still smug his hormonal partner couldn't find anything to moan about!

Heat and hormones, he could have asked you if you wanted ice in your water and you would still have thought he said something wrong.

Maybe tell him that being pregnant you are sensitive so may need to be careful about divorce jokes.

Hope you are ok OP

Not the point of the thread I know but it shouldn’t it a done deal that he takes the bins out. Surely a pregnant woman shouldn’t be dragging heavy bins down paths.

Oh shut up, she's pregnant not dying. Illness and unusually high risk pregnancy notwithstanding pregnant women can crack on as normal for the most part. I was mucking my horse out and shifting straw bales about until the week before I went into labour.

Don't worry OP, you'll laugh about this once your hormones have chilled out!

WhatFlavourIsIt · 12/05/2024 20:48

I've said similar to my husband. I have no plans to divorce him, but it really gets on my tits when he continues to push the rubbish down in a clearly full bin.

You sound like me 🤣. Husbands should have the decency to be annoying twats when we are hormonal and need a good rage.

Mind you, I can normally find SOMETHING to whinge about 😂😂

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 12/05/2024 20:48

Yep, this is true. A black bag of rubbish is way heavier than a toddler on your hip when pregnant!

Oh gosh some women really become princesses when pregnant! 😳 (normal healthy pregnancies only)

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 12/05/2024 20:51

Even the most sensitive guy doesn't realise how vulnerable pregnant women can be. It was a lame joke and he was kind to you when you told him it upset you. That's all it is OP. I'm sure he won't do it again.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 12/05/2024 20:52

I think he was trying to make you laugh OP or at least not feel bad about getting him to empty a rammed full bin - it's the kind of thing my DH would say and I know it's because he loves me that it's funny

He sounds like a good egg your DH

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 12/05/2024 20:53

@MistyGreenAndBlue I found nothing. I hated him for it, and I hated my friend who didn't understand 🤣

God how irritating. Screw the pair of them 🤣🤣

JMSA · 12/05/2024 20:56

YABU, sorry!

Invisablepanic · 12/05/2024 20:57

I remember last time I was pregnant standing in the kitchen laughing at something with DH and then the laughing suddenly turned into tears. I was crying for quite a few minutes but I had been in a good mood all day. Hormones are crazy!

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 12/05/2024 20:59

@MistyGreenAndBlue I was colouring to try to calm down. I said to friend 'i wanna shoce this pencil up his perfect effing nose'
The howl she made!
Oh then an hour later came the crying cos I was horrible and didn't deserve a great guy like him. Then his understanding hug peed me off again!

I have 3 kids and he is still alive the guy is either really thick to get me pregnant that many times, very brave or has a genuine death wish!

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 12/05/2024 20:59

Sounds like a totally daft joke to me.
(Completely get feeling hormonal and pregnant though, sometimes feels anything but a joke!)

KreedKafer · 12/05/2024 21:01

He made a completely harmless joke! Totally normal. I honestly don’t think I know anyone who would be even remotely offended or upset by this.

I’d laugh if my partner said that to me.

Just wait until the menopause. 😂😉

😂 Sounds like something I'd do. My brain's been known to invent things to be mad at if I can't automatically think of something lol.
I'll l be half way through a row in my head with DH and be getting more and more wound up until my sense kicks in and goes "you realise this hasn't even happened, you daft cow?! Sit down and shut up 🤣)

PurpleBugz · 12/05/2024 21:05

It tell him the divorce joke upset you. But I do honk you are overeating

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 12/05/2024 21:07

I’ve just been shoving the stuff down all day, hope it wasn’t too messy’ I would be seething. So you've not emptied it ALL day and just kept adding to it? Why?!!!

Yes this

I started joking about divorce at the wedding reception and I do it on a fairly regular basis. DH knows I adore him and divorce is not on the cards.

He didn't mean it, OP. But pregnancy can make you feel vulnerable so on that basis, YANBU. Send him to the shop for some ice-cream for you?

HelloCiao · 12/05/2024 23:28

You are being sensitive and this sounds like the sort of humour my husband and I have. When my husband takes the bins out, he always says, "Whoops, I've forgotten something," and picks me up and pretends to put me in the bin 😄
