Am I being unreasonable here? I live in a densely populated area with lots of people packed into a smallish space. Every fucking spring as soon as the weather gets warmer some selfish prick keeps one of these burning all night. The smell and fumes travel and every one else if they don’t want their house smelling like a bonfire has to shut every windows regardless of the heat. They should be banned. Plus pollution, etc.

OP posts:
Alicewinn · 12/05/2024 10:40

If it’s just wood they are burning, I’d find it hard to get stressed about it. Plastic or chemical firelighters would not be ok

Bellyblueboy · 12/05/2024 10:44

at my last house we had very small gardens. Neighbours got one. It was a meter to the right and then directly underneath my bedroom window. The lit it every night. The house stank. A whole summer I couldn’t open windows because the smell cling to curtains.

I am so grateful my new neighbours are more considerate. The odd bbq is of course perfectly normal - but a fire billowing out smoke for hours and hours every night - awful.

Longma · 12/05/2024 10:53

We had one. In my head it would be cosy to sit around, with the calming glow and warmth in our skins after the sun went down.

The reality is that they produce a lot of smoke, regardless of what smokeless products we bought. It got everywhere and seemed to hit everyone regardless of where you sat. And that smoke clung to your clothes for ages.

After a handful of uses it went to the skip.

I have a much bigger problem with people who play music in their gardens. Fire pits don’t bother me, assuming the whole street wants their peace and quiet ruined does.

Noise cancelling headphones.

I love to sunbathe or potter in my garden or just lie on a lounger with a good book. I either play music through my own headphones or just wear them to block out the sound, which could be anything from neighbourhood squeaky trampoline going for hours on end; someone who thinks the whole neighbourhood loves IAMDDB, Tupac, Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj as much as they do, the non-stop yapping Pomeranian who's dog owner can no longer hear, the mother who feels she has to be screaming at full capacity at her children all of the time... from an upstairs window. I live in London so it can be very full on. Noise cancelling headphones can be a real game changer.

You're doing it wrong! We've had ours for over 10 years, not massively smoky x

SeaBreezeDewberryMusk · 12/05/2024 11:04

YANBU

I have neighbours who smoke cannabis. It bloody stinks and I have to shut windows too on hot sunny days. Some folk are just selfish and inconsiderate.

DarkLene · 12/05/2024 03:11

Well I’m not a lover of the bbq as I’m a veggie and i won’t go on because some smart arse will come along and say you can also bbq veg. The point about the fire pit stench is it’s ALL FUCKING NIGHT.

shouldn't be any different to a log burner that people have in their homes. they burn wood just the same

hangingonfordearlife1 · 12/05/2024 11:12

ThomasineMay · 12/05/2024 07:05

Every time we gets hot evenings, a neighbour inevitably burns theirs all night and I have to make a choice between either letting letting my baby breathe in pollution and smoke all night or closing the windows and stressing all night that they're too hot.

Edited

talking about pollution of burning wood is ridiculous when the average car gives our 70% more noxious fumes

KimberleyClark · 12/05/2024 11:14

JacquesHarlow · 12/05/2024 06:13

And nowadays, the younger generation consider having a garden a luxury because they struggle to afford a home with one. So people should enjoy them.

What a bizarre statement to make in the context of this thread.

Some people can shoehorn boomer hatred into anything.

GoingDownLikeBHS · 12/05/2024 11:17

@hangingonfordearlife1 you're joking surely? You don't have a car with its engine running outside your bedroom window for 8 hours!

Couple of years ago when it was around 35 degrees one night in the summer, next door lit one of these, I had no idea they'd got one prior to that night. We couldn't use the bedroom nearest for 2 nights, it was sickening, my DD had to sleep on the sofa but even then our entire house stank. So they're burning fuck knows what a few metres from the bedrooms and apparently thats a live and let live attitude?! Everyone having fun eh?

Also why do they smell so bad? Surely if its just wood there should be no difference in smell whether its a bonfire or a fire pit? But from what OP is saying there is a difference. And why are they only used when its very hot and people are more likely to have breathing difficulties?

Bellyblueboy · 12/05/2024 11:25

hangingonfordearlife1 · 12/05/2024 11:09

But chimneys are much, much higher.

in the case of my previous neighbours the fire pit was underneath my bred room window. It’s very, very different to neighbours having a wood burning stove or fire.

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 12/05/2024 11:26

I have a fire a couple of times a week, 99% of the time in the evenings. I buy good wood to make it less smokey as possible.

My neighbours are welcome to tell me it's annoying them, but they haven't, so I assume everyone is ok with it.

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/05/2024 06:04

Hmm petrol smell... 😍⛽

I agree re that smell

My dream job would have been petrol attendant and spend my days filling people's tanks 😆

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 12/05/2024 11:33

This thread has made me consider buying a solo stove now, though.

Wendysfriend · 12/05/2024 11:35

Oh wow all night, that's awful. One of my brother's has one he has a house on some land so no neighbours but I really hate how the fire smell clings to you. When we visit we all wear old clothes, that fire smell is terrible, everyone just smells dirty.

I have a neighbour who uses charcoal BBQ, it's truly disgusting, they don't clean it, just cook on top of dirt, their food always smells of dead bodies, I do laugh though when she tells me that everyone's mouths must be watering when they're cooking 😂

IamSlave · 12/05/2024 11:36

Bbq don't last for long.

I've got two dc coughing their guts up with suspected whopping cough and smoke has been wafting around our house for hours.

It's a hot night and we can't open the windows.

All because of some selfish fuckers fire pit.

I love them when you are sat by them, but we don't have one because I couldn't enjoy it knowing people were seething trapped with windows shut all because of me

charitynamechange · 12/05/2024 11:38

@IamSlave I've been reading in the news about the rise in whooping cough cases. Didn't seem to be around when my children were young. Sounds horrible

Stressed1011 · 12/05/2024 11:41

houseonthehill · 12/05/2024 09:05

I like to light one next to my hot tub.

With a massive windchime clanking beside it? 🤣

MonsteraMama · 12/05/2024 11:44

We've got one, and hot and cold smokers. We don't have direct neighbours though, I'm not sure I'd have them going if we did. I love the smell but appreciate not everyone does. The smoke does travel even if you use low-smoke wood.

They are lovely though. There is something primally fun about sticking marshmallows or little sausages or corn cobs on a stick and putting them over a fire.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 12/05/2024 11:44

KimberleyClark · 12/05/2024 11:14

🤣🤣

Definitely wasn't boomer hatred, I have nothing against any generation. It just is a fact that gardens are considered a luxury now. Actually, many new builds are sacrificing gardens in some of their plots to a) build more houses and b) make them slightly more "affordable".

Also lived without a garden myself so I do appreciate how much of a good thing they are.

DeedlessIndeed · 12/05/2024 11:46

I think that if people in cities/urban areas aren't allowed to install and use wood-burners, then they shouldn't be able to use fire pits.

If one is allowed, then surely both should be?

It’s a shame that you have to block out birdsong and bees etc as well though.

Runningbird43 · 12/05/2024 11:48

Same with wood burners. Neighbour has just installed one and the smell of woodsmoke all evening is really annoying. Especially on a dry day when I have to bring my washing in!

Okbyethen · 12/05/2024 11:50

I hate the bastard things. My neighbour had theirs going yesterday and I had to shut the windows. I wanted them open because it's warm but no, my stupid selfish twat neighbour has to have smoke wafting everywhere and made the inside of my house stink of smoke too 🤬

Yeah, I'm not a fan 😄

I'd be surprised anyone could hear a bee through all that racket
