Fire Pits. Horrible anti social stink.

Am I being unreasonable here? I live in a densely populated area with lots of people packed into a smallish space. Every fucking spring as soon as the weather gets warmer some selfish prick keeps one of these burning all night. The smell and fumes travel and every one else if they don’t want their house smelling like a bonfire has to shut every windows regardless of the heat. They should be banned. Plus pollution, etc.

i am not keen, in a row of terraces it's really hard not to be affected and as pp have said the smell fills the house. I think it would be better if people actually tried to use better fuel like seasoned wood - that does usually smell better and produces less stinky smoke. Our neighbours seem to burn any old crap every evening on their fire pit and barbecue and it's grim and polluting.

GiacomettisCornetto · 12/05/2024 09:20

It's not the smell I'd be bothered by so much as the fine particulates that can't be filtered by the nose or upper respiratory defenses so they get deep in your lungs.

Especially when any of the 1000 carcinogens produced by a fire pit/bonfire attach to these fine particles

Particularly damaging for children as their lungs are still developing and they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. They also aggravate existing chronic heart & lung conditions and are linked with premature deaths in people suffering from congestive heart failure, angina, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema or asthma.

They'll probably be restricted eventually, as will wood burning stoves, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that heart and lung disease, stroke, and cancers are among the top five causes of global mortality, and one-quarter to one-third of deaths from these diseases are associated with increased exposure to combustion-related air pollution.

They're so bad for people with asthma. YANBU. Note down when the fires happen, complain to your council, they'll get fined. That should nip it in the bud.

You've not dealt with local councils have you?

I agree with this. We use seasoned, properly stored and dry wood which is so much nicer for everyone.

RubberyChicken · 12/05/2024 09:26

I love mine, it's nice and toasty. Nothing better than having it blazing, smoking a few joints and listening to some drum and bass

Hedjwitch · 12/05/2024 09:27

Iove my firepit. Use dry wood and make sure it is out before I go to bed.

Neighbours on one side have a yappy dog. Neighbours on other side have loud parties late into the night. Neighbour over the back played godawful rock music yesterday afternoon while I was trying to read in the sunshine.

I dont think my occasional fire is the problem here.

Bloom15 · 12/05/2024 09:32

YABU

I don't have one but do like them. I like the smell - even though I do have to take my inhaler if around one

lavenderlou · 12/05/2024 09:32

We have one. Use it maybe once or twice a year with dry wood to toast marshmallows. Not sure why people feel the need to have it on all night - ours is on for a couple of hours maximum. Are they sitting out there all night? I would probably be annoyed more by the talking than the smell if that's the case.

Tulipj · 12/05/2024 09:35

Well most people use their garden obnoxiously these days op it’s shit, if it’s not radio blasting or hot tubs it’s the patio door brigade who make sure none of us can sit in our garden fir a second of peace. Found my dream house ruined by the fact that the neighbours never go out and live their entire life in the garden shouting from patio doors. People aren’t considerate anymore.

Tulipj · 12/05/2024 09:36

@Bloom15 so do the rest of us.

Newsenmum · 12/05/2024 09:39

goldenretrievermum5 · 12/05/2024 03:07

Also - surely with that list of complaints you’d want barbecues banned as well? 🧐

If a bbq went all night, I’d be annoyed too!

I agree they’re really bad for you. I know someone who regularly likes to burn stuff in their garden. 😑

BobLemon · 12/05/2024 09:48

My DH loves his, and I love him, so I’ll never tell him that I fucking hate his fire pit.

He (and so many others) don’t understand fire/air/fuel/heat etc. To try not to run out of fuel he constantly starves his fire, so it doesn’t run hot enough, smokes like a bastard and stinks to high heaven.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 12/05/2024 09:53

@BobLemon so he lets it constantly smoke to save money on fuel?
He sounds like a lovely neighbour 🙄

Anything that puts smoke stink out, especially in built up areas, should be banned or at the least have use limited.

RaininSummer · 12/05/2024 09:54

I think they sound awful things if the smell means windows have to be closed. Very selfish but I doubt most people give their neighbours a thought when lighting them up. Barbecues also reek.

BIossomtoes · 12/05/2024 09:55

LindorDoubleChoc · 12/05/2024 03:23

Yanbu! Hideous things. If we ban garden bonfires why on earth is it ok to have fire pits?

We don’t. There was one across the road from us on Wednesday. People here often have them.

Tara336 · 12/05/2024 10:01

Log burners need banning too, our neighbours have one, it stinks and when it's first lit the smoke always seems to blow towards our house, I can't have the windows open in the ensuite as it makes it stink of smoke so its a nightmare if you have a hot steamy shower and can't open the window to ventilate. Have considered many times complaining ti council about it as he stacks the logs against our fence and it has mice and rats in it that then burrow into our garden under the fence. We've spoken to them about it but they didn't care very much at all, asked them ti move the logs and not burn wood and use smoke free fuel instead but we are unreasonable apparently

ssd · 12/05/2024 10:06

We have a firepit. I hadn't considered how bad the smoke smell is. I'm glad I'm aware now. I'm going to light it tonight and do my best to get the smoke wafting into the neighbours who let their dog out to bark every morning at 6.30. Hope it annoys them.

Kesio · 12/05/2024 10:06

Sounds very selfish to send smoky air into your neighbours’ windows all night. I’d contact the council and ask them to send out a letter to a few
houses in the street.

PatienceOfEngels · 12/05/2024 10:14

I hate them. Because of how our house is laid out we have to close every window if our neighbour lights his fire which means it's hot and stuffy and the house never gets to cool down in the summer. Our neighbour also barbecues on wood which stinks (I don't have a problem with gas or even charcoal barbecues). It's anti-social and heavily polluting in a built up area. Our council is constantly posting stuff about how to light fires responsibly but it doesn't make any difference if they won't ban it.

I love the smell of wood smoke. We had one but had a big garden. I live in a terrace in London now and wouldn't have one as much as I love them. Only the odd BBQ round here.

Walkthelakes · 12/05/2024 10:32

I have a fire pit and use it every night when the weather is nice. Rather than sitting in front of the telly I have a cuppa, listen to music and sit in front of the fire. At the moment we are lucky that it doesn’t impact a soul. They are going to build 16 houses on the field behind my house. I didn’t want them built but I know people have to live somewhere so have come to terms with it. I’m going to still have my fire pit though when the houses are built. It makes me happy

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 12/05/2024 10:34

@Walkthelakes you do realise that a fire pit isn't a requirement for drinking tea, listening to music and reading?
Some of us manage those things without polluting the air around us
