When did your DDs get their ears pierced?

I have a one year old DD born in UK where we live.

Dh is from a country where baby girls get their ears pierced pretty much at birth - I think hospitals there even offer to pierce their ears as part of post birth services!!!!

I'm totally against this and so is DH (he's lived many years in UK) its treating baby girls like objects to decorate and not letting them choose if they want it or not. Also could be a choking hazard.

We're visiting family in his country later in the year and one of the aunts is already talking about how she'll pierce babies ears as she's a qualified nurse!!!

I've explained on Facetime that it's not what we do over here and we don't pierce baby girls ears at such a young age etc but don't think the message is getting through. I'll have to be extremely clear when we arrive but it's clearly so ingrained in their way of doing things.

I know I'm not BU to avoid piercing her ears but it's got me thinking about what age is the right age? Baby/ toddler is far too young imo

I was thinking that when DD is old enough to decide for herself - maybe 12? I think i was 10 when i had mine done but I remember I had a friend whose father was very strict and acted like it was the same as getting a tattoo so she wasn't allowed until she was 16.

I've said the summer after they finish year 6 and no sooner.

DrCoconut · 11/05/2024 20:03

Don't have girls but my mum broke with family tradition and waited until I was 2 to get mine done. No regrets.

Bushmillsbabe · 11/05/2024 20:07

I had mine done about 12/13 I think. It was as a reward for getting good exam grades, I was so proud, saw it as a bit if a rite of passage.

My oldest is 8 (year 3) I would probably let her have then done from now, but she isn't interested. She asked about how it is to have them done, I showed her a video and it was a very clear no. From now it will be up to her when/if she decides she wants it done. Ours do school swim lessons through year 2 and year 4, so will have to wait until year 5 at least as I don't think can swim for a few weeks after doing it.

I personally hate seeing babies with ears pierced,I just feel sad for them having that choice taken away. It was such a 'coming of age' event for me, that I would hate for them not to remember it. But that's just me, I know lots of people don't see it as a big deal

thejadefish · 11/05/2024 20:18

I had mine done at about 11 I think it was (DD hasn't had hers done yet, as I'm not convinced she would care for them well enough at 7 despite promising that she would). I didn't actually want my ears pierced particularly (although I wasn't set against it either) my mum talked me into it 😂. Used a gun for mine, but I've been told a needle is better - something for me to think about once my DD is a bit older.

mtg35 · 11/05/2024 20:27

Just before starting high school for mine..that when they got a mobile phone too.

thankyouforthedayz · 11/05/2024 20:31

12 when she was old enough to look after them and sure she wanted them. My friends daughter has never chosen to have her ears peirced so it was lucky for her that it wasn't imposed on her.

Tintackedsea · 11/05/2024 20:32

I had mine done as a 12th birthday present. My DDs will get them as 11th as they are getting phones for 12th.

One of my best pals is of Middle Eastern heritage and she had them done at 2.

Whatever you decide is fine.

Daffyyellow · 11/05/2024 20:33

I was 15.

DD2 was the more keen of my 2 and she had hers done as a special milestone at 12, DD1 followed suit and was the same age having hers done as I had been having mine.

sanityisamyth · 11/05/2024 20:33

Not this again!

Chickoletta · 11/05/2024 20:34

10th birthday.

Mrsbluesk1 · 11/05/2024 20:36

I am from a country where little girls get their ears pierced in the first few days after birth. When I took my daughter over, she was 2 years old, and when all the aunts asked why she hasn't gotten pierced yet, I calmly said because she beautiful just the way she is.

When she was 6 she started begging for earrings, and got them on her 8th birthday. She cleaned her ears herself and looked after it by herself and knew all the dangers too.

weegiemum · 11/05/2024 20:43

Both my girls did at age 11/12 - in between primary and secondary school.

Ds got his (both) done at 13.

Dd2 then went on to pierce a random number of holes in her ears and nose before she left school. The other 2, not so much.

I wouldn't have done it before they were able to look after them themselves.

Moveoverdarlin · 11/05/2024 20:46

I’ve told my DD she can get them done in the summer holidays after she finishes primary school. And to be honest if I can hold it off longer I will. I think little girls look absolutely awful with pierced ears.

Soubriquet · 11/05/2024 20:47

My dd is 11. She asked about a year ago to have her ears pierced but changed her mind when I said it requires a needle. So it will be when she’s ready.

I had mine done at 4

FannyCradocksDoughnut · 11/05/2024 20:48

13 the same age as I was!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 11/05/2024 20:51

The Summer holidays after Yr6 and before Secondary .
It was a right of passage ( I took a day of A/L so we could go the first day of the holidays ...and yes it was Claires because that was what DD wanted and all her friends were having done )

She's 21 now , her newer piercing were done at a Tattoo Parlour with needles which is what you'll be recommended .

allhailthebrain · 11/05/2024 20:59

I had mine done at 12, between first and second year at secondary school. I think my mum had said I could do it the year before but didn't get round to it. She got hers pierced for the first time after I had mine done!

My daughter has started asking across this last year and I've just booked an appointment for the day after she finishes primary school this summer so she'll be 11.

Be careful about leaving your little one with family members who are strong minded about this issue while you are on your trip. My friend's mum had her baby girl's pierced behind her back when they visited 😓

FloofyBear · 11/05/2024 20:59

I had mine done at 8 then second holes on my 11th birthday.
My DD15 doesn't want them Pierced at all, doesn't see the point.
Culturally I don't agree with TBF, cultural FGM and circumcising also a big unacceptable IMO no
Matter now many people harp on about culture, religion etc it's unnecessary mutilation

cerebuswannabe · 11/05/2024 21:01

I was 8 and DD was 6.

FloofyBear · 11/05/2024 21:03

Just tell the aunt that you don't want it doing ... if she mentions anything f else hair say, sorry closed subject so please stop going on -
Its no thank you

BeReet · 11/05/2024 21:04

I had to wait till I was 16 but 2 of my girls had them done young, one was 5 and one was 3. My other daughter hasn't bothered having hers done, she's 15 now and my son has thought about it a few times but never bothered his arse actually doing anything about it

papadontpreach2me · 11/05/2024 21:11

Dd got hers done when she was 3, for her 5th birthday she got a second set done.

My daughter doesn't look awful.

papadontpreach2me · 11/05/2024 21:12

My daughter doesn't look awful.

So by the time she was five, she had two holes in each ear?

VestibuleVirgin · 11/05/2024 21:18

PandaG · 11/05/2024 18:44

End of primary school for DD, I took her as a surprise before her leavers' party. She'd wanted them done for ages, but we had initially said 13 and I had to persuade DH to allow it younger. I then said no more piercings until 18 and she paid for them, and she waited until 20 for a second set of lobe piercings. However in retrospect if she'd asked at 14 ish we'd have allowed a second set. Her body, her choice.

Her body, her choice at 14? Based on that logic, she could be doing anything
