GUEST WANTS SHOWER CURTAIN INSTALLED.

I have a friend coming to stay with me for over a week in the Summer. She has sent a message asking that a shower curtain be installed in the en-suite bathroom she will use for the duration of her stay. She will pay.

Due to the shape of the bath etc it would be tricky to install a curtain and spoil the look of the place, I'm reluctant to do this, especially as she's getting free board and lodging in Edinburgh during festival time. AIBU reasonable in refusing? PS: She is a very large lady - no one else has complained about this, so guess it's due to her size.

Why dont you say shower curtains are not our thing. However am happy for you to bring one along. You can always take it with you when you go.

PurplePositivity · 10/05/2024 17:12

I'd ask her to look up the word favour

Imisssleep2 · 10/05/2024 18:17

What an odd request. Presumably you have a screen at present, but unless the shower is in the middle of the living room I can't see what difference it will make, surely the bathroom is private and she won't be seen through the screen. Your house, your choices, I would refuse

I would avoid the use of the word 'lump' in this situation. 😉

That’s what I thought!

Calliopespa · 10/05/2024 21:22

In fairness I’m sure it is more likely out of consideration she is asking - either protecting your floors or shielding your neighbours/ you from immodesty.

I can’t think of anything too selfishly niche - like enjoying the shower curtain sticking to her wet flesh.

Famfirst · 10/05/2024 21:23

You're being really horrible about her. If you grudge her staying with you and the precious money you'll lose, then don't do it. You have a very Edinburgh approach to her.

Sandwichgen · 10/05/2024 21:29

if there is no screen there at present, and it is a handheld shower to be used sitting down in the bath… she may not be able to sit down in the bath, or to kneel. So she has to stand or semi-stand. So she needs something to keep the splashing contained

Oh I reckon that’s it: she can’t sit down in the bath.

I feel desperately sorry for her and think she was brave to ask. I wouldn’t be judging her.

Chuzzle · 10/05/2024 21:57

Ask her to bring a curtain with her, and a telescopic curtain rail. Remind her to tuck the curtain in the bath when she has a shower.

I’m now going to know exactly what is going on when I see large people on public transport with a suitcase and a telescopic rail.

I think she's a CF
You're sacrificing a lot of money for her visit. Air b&b must be in high demand during festival duration.
She wants you to remodel your home.. Nope.. and I'm a hospitable friend

Possibly the most fustrating thread ever. An OP with inadequate information followed by an update that was just as bad. This kind of thing should be banned.

If the friend explained why she thinks she needs the shower curtain, the OP would be able to either alleviate her concerns or have more understanding for her request. Maybe the explanation got left out the OP.

After 7 pages, I'd like a diagram / photo of the shower set up please. I'm invested now.

I feel similarly.

I am simply full of questions. What stops the water going over the side now? Exactly how oddly-shaped is this bath? Why are people paying to stay in OP's property now if there isn't a shower curtain around the bath?
Has the OP saved up money to repair the bathroom if the floorboards go rotten because of years of water cascading over the edge of the bath?!

something like this with a curtain attached

That's a good idea - I'd never thought of it! I dislike shower curtains but would need a ridiculously expensive custom-fitted screen. If you sort of drape a curtain into the bath from the top of a screen like this, it seems like it'd be less likely to move around and get in the way.

At £25, I might just give it a try 🙂

Whatifitallgoesright · 11/05/2024 02:00

Where is the diagram? How can i see what coverage is already there? Such a lack of necessary information in a post and so many people having to ask obvious questions. Its really tedious but also stop with the questions people.

WalrusOfLove · 11/05/2024 02:38

I'm thinking that water runs off of her and lands outside the bath. A shower curtain tucked in at bottom would direct the water back into the tub.

WalrusOfLove · 11/05/2024 02:40

I actually remember my flatmate years ago having an extremely large friend to stay. She managed to make the bath overflow when she got in and it was coming through the ceiling downstairs. 🤭

Tartantotty · 08/05/2024 08:31

Thanks all. I will write her and tell her that this is not possible. She is lucky to get free accommodation at I time when I usually earn a bit of extra money on Air bnb. I guess she wants the curtain because the bath is small and guess she doesn't want to splash water all over the place.

Will there be water all over the floor then?

Whose problem will this be?

I think most adults know how to use a shower curtain without instructions.

Nuttyputty · 11/05/2024 10:43

I dont understand, whata there now? A glass door or just nothing? What do you mean by spoiling the look? Surely its her ensuite to look at for the week, could you not just take it down after shes gone?

maxandru · 11/05/2024 13:35

This is so out of line ! 😂

I remember my FIL asked us to change the hinges on the bathroom door to the other side as he’s a big guy and it was a squash to get in 😂

He also suggested we get a new sofa for his next visit because ours didn’t have headrests.

I just thought both requests were hilarious !

Is it? The guest offered to pay for it and unless specific room shape prevents it, we are talking about ordering a telescopic pole and curtain and putting them up temporarily, no drilling, no long term change.

Tartantotty · 11/05/2024 18:18

Thanks all. I have told my friend that it's not possible to install a shower curtain a it would mean drilling into the tiles etc. I have offered her my en-suite shower.

Please please tell those of us who find this far more interesting than we should - what's the set up in the bathroom? Can't believe it's been three days and we still don't know. Grin

And why are you discounting a sprung loaded shower pole as an option that doesn't require any drilling and is very cheap.
