In the interests of science, I put it to the test.

Jam first then cream or cream first then jam.

After extensive testing, I am happy to confirm that it makes no fucking difference whatsoever.

However, in the interests of science I will repeat the tests later on.

Oh, and just because I like to kick shit off on here...

It's scone to rhyme with throne, bone and zone.

No debate.

My American friend stopped an argument about this once. She mixed the cream and jam together and we all agreed that was definitely wrong!0

Americans. Heathens I tell ye.

Papyrophile · 07/05/2024 21:35

Jam first, always,

Papyrophile · 07/05/2024 21:37

And as much clotted cream as you can pile on top.

Papyrophile · 07/05/2024 21:38

But I still prefer tuffs or splits to scones.

transformandriseup · 07/05/2024 21:59

Rodda's is too thick to spread with a knife so best to spread the jam with a knife first then the clotted cream with a teaspoon.

Dododo83 · 07/05/2024 22:01

Jam first.

scoon like soon

SiobhanSharpe · 07/05/2024 22:19

Scoon?? OK if you're Scottish I suppose....

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/05/2024 22:24

People trying and failing to spread cream on top of jam, are just doing it wrong - that's why it doesn't work. There's no spreading, it's a dollop. As big a dollop as possible - approximately equal in volume to the (throne)scone itself.

Thusly:

Scones. Jam then cream or cream then jam? I have solved it.
OneWildNightWithJBJ · 07/05/2024 22:34

Your pronunciation is correct OP.

It’s jam first then clotted cream. Never known anyone to put either whipped cream or butter on scones if part of a cream tea!!

Beatrixslobber · 07/05/2024 22:40

CharlieDickens · 07/05/2024 16:07

I just don't understand scones anyway. Too heavy for a snack and not substantial enough for a meal. They just don't fit into a neat category for anything. Just what are they?

It’s for after your pasty. You come to Cornwall and eat a CORNISH pasty followed by a CORNISH cream tea.

redfacebigdisgrace · 07/05/2024 22:43

I can’t stand cream but love a scone with butter and jam. Weirdly cheese scones are good with butter and jam.

Lilyhatesjaz · 07/05/2024 22:46

Clotted cream on first then a big blob of jam in the middle. My Dad would call this a Bobby dazzler.
If your cream isn't clotted just don't bother.

SconeCreamJam · 07/05/2024 22:47

Did somebody call me?

unintended101 · 07/05/2024 23:16

Random thought, but isn't sushi supposed to be eaten upside down ie salmon at the bottom. That way the salmon hits the tongue first resulting in a taste explosion compared to rice down. I suggest we all eat scones upside down...

SausageRoll2020 · 07/05/2024 16:53

It's scone to rhyme with gone.

Cream first makes sense as it's essentially replacing butter and you'd never put butter on top of jam.

Yeah but I also wouldn't dollop the butter on with a big spoon 😆

You reminded me of my aunt from the US though, she loved having scones with jam and cream when she visited but she would actually scrape the clotted cream on as if it were a reeeeally thin layer of butter followed by a thin scrape of jam!

Foodfiend500 · 07/05/2024 23:29

Your pronunciation, OP, is spot on.
But it has to be butter, then jam. Sorted! 😀

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 07/05/2024 23:36

Scone rhymes with gone unless you are talking about the village and palace in Perthshire and then it's pronounced skoon

And jam first.

whatdoidonowffs · 07/05/2024 23:52

Jam first always
anything else proves you’re from beyond the Tamar and a heathen to boot !!!

sprigatito · 07/05/2024 23:59

DrJonesIpresume · 07/05/2024 13:58

I solved this years ago and it is entirely dependent on the relative stiffness of the two ingredients on the day. Stiffest one goes on first, sloppier one second.

DH and I call it the Stiffiosity Index.

I like you 😂

Butter then cheese Grin
And it rhymes with throne

RafaistheKingofClay · 08/05/2024 00:28

I’m not going to comment on the order other than a lot of people on this thread are wrong.

But people who are reassembling scones can’t have put enough cream on, right?

EBearhug · 08/05/2024 02:05

BarnacleBeasley · 07/05/2024 13:54

Cream is not the lightest if it is clotted cream. So: if clotted cream, put loads of cream on first, then blob the jam on top using a teaspoon. If whipped cream, obviously that's disappointing but you'll just have to put it on top of the jam or it'll get squashed.

Rhymes with gone.

This.

Magic E makes the vowel say it's name- so the O in Scone says "oh" so it is Scone, rhymes with cone.

This! Alphablocks do a wonderful song about it
