I don’t generally care about the Met Gala, but my jaw dropped when I saw this photo.

Can you imagine walking around looking like this?!

To think Anok Yai is one of the most beautiful women on earth?

Are you mad- plain in the natural photo? her face is objectively exquisite. If that is plain then God please let me be plain like her.

Just because she doesn’t meet a Eurocentric definition of beauty doesn’t make her plain. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but if you can’t see her objective facial symmetry and striking features then I think you have an underlying bias deeper than just personal preference.

I don't think that's fair.

I don't rate her either. Its a bit offensive to accuse people of an underlying bias just because they don't agree with you. It's all subjective.

Speaking as a bloke, no, sorry I do not find her "one of the most beautiful women on Earth".

The "Eurocentric definition of beauty" (whatever that may mean) does not enter into it. She's an attractive woman, but not that attractive.

That’s the thing - attractive is fine. She may not be the most beautiful to many (she is to me), she may not be pretty to others but a previous poster called her plain which is just ridiculous. At the very least she is striking.

Margot Robbie. I think she's mesmerising.

And I really wish I didn't but Kendall Jenner and Megan Fox.

I agree with all of those (although, Megan appears to have recently had some unfortunate work done).

Do you have examples of women who aren’t white who you consider mesmerising?

I’m really enjoying this new era of Pamela Anderson. She looks lovely, and really comfortable with herself.

It’s interesting how many words there are to describe a woman’s appearance in a positive way. To me, they mean different things:

Beautiful: there’s an underlying power to these good looks. Maybe quiet, maybe gentle, maybe brash and bold, maybe a bit handsome. Definitely arresting. For me, eg Anok Yai, Lauryn Hill, actually Kim Kardashian yesterday and during the Tom Brady roasting. She’s got a flinty look in her eye these days that comes from experience, I think, and it suits her.

Pretty: pleasing to the eye, doesn’t evoke strong feelings beyond “she looks lovely”. For me, eg Sienna Miller, Deepika Padukone, Emily Blunt, Meghan Markle

Gorgeous: says something about the woman’s personality as well as her looks. And probably something about the entire package. For me, eg Salma Hayek, Nigella Lawson, Elizabeth Taylor. Have to say, for me the too-skinny type doesn’t fall into this category, for me they seem weak and vulnerable

Handsome: strong, maybe even masculine bone structure. Unambiguously what it is, not a shy retiring type. Definitely tall! For me, eg Gwendoline Christie, Tracy Chapman, many of the famous Italian actresses of the 50s

It’s tricky finding examples amongst celebrities as obviously we only know what they show us. Much easier to give examples of people we know personally.

No they are they only 3 that really stand out for me.

I don't find many people, male or female, hugely attractive. I don't see the fuss about most that are lauded as beautiful in the media.

DazedNotConfused1 · 07/05/2024 18:29

yeah she is attractive but I see women who look like her all the time! There are thousands if not millions of beautiful women who would look just as good or better given the chance

You see tall, thin, beautiful black women who look like her all the time? Where do you live?

If the only people you think are spectacularly beautiful are white, then I don’t think you can say a previous poster’s point about adhering to a Eurocentric definition of beauty is offensive. You appear to have a very narrow (and 100% white) view of what beauty is.

I'm mixed race ffs.

Actually your post is really offensive to me. I named 3 people and went on to say I don't find many people attractive. So because the 3 I find attractive currently just happen to be white you've somehow managed to conclude I'm racist in someway.

Beyond ridiculous. Pathetic.

If the only people you can conceive of as spectacularly beautiful are three white women, your view of beauty is narrow and entirely white. This is a factual statement. Nothing ridiculous about it.

You being mixed race has absolutely no impact on this.

ETA: you can be as offended as you like, still a factual statement.

YANBU
Id never heard of her but a quick look on instagram confirms her as other worldly. She has the body of a 90s super model and you know with that bone structure and skin it would be impossible to take your eyes off her in real life.

Now I’ve seen the boyfriend I hope they have stunningly beautiful babies together!

PS Zendaya, Meghan are beautiful women. Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but this is a hill I’d die on.

It's 3 people.

How you can jump to such a ludicrous conclusion based on 3 people currently makes you look utterly foolish.

And to add insult to injury you then say to a mixed race person that race doesn't matter?! Really?!
You're seeking to deny my choice by implying it has negative connotations. That is coercive.

The only person demonstrating prejudice here is you.

Stop. It would be laughable if it wasn't so offensive. Feel free to have the last word as you aren't worth my time.

No one called you racist ~ we’ve been trained for centuries to have a euro centric view of beauty. So there’s a lot of bias towards the white standard of beauty at play, including among black people (just look at how until recently most shows would only have representation of light skinned black women, the proliferation of skin lightening creams etc).

Rather than get offended by this, you’d be better off asking yourself why you cannot see any attractiveness at all in Anok.

You’re just repeating how offended you are, but you aren’t actually refuting anything I’ve said.

And I (a Black woman), would certainly never say race doesn’t matter. Which is why I didn’t. I said you being mixed race had no impact on the factual statement about your narrow and white view of beauty. As it doesn’t.

No conclusions were jumped to. You’re not being coerced. And I haven’t implied anything, I’ve made clear definitive statements. If you want to stop engaging, I’m okay with that.

No. Why should I have to justify why I don't find a particular person attractive?

Is a person of colour not allowed not to find another particular person of colour beautiful?

Rather than telling me not to.get offended at the suggestion my race doesn't impact me you would be better off asking yourself why you are telling a person of colour what to think.

I don't think being mixed race changes anything. White beauty is seen as ideal and it affects all of us. Even those of us who aren't white.

My sister stopped straightening her hair last year and was so shocked that she felt beautiful with her natural black hair.

Black girls grow up wanting to look like white Barbie. We know this. Studies have been done on this.

The idea that a mixed race woman would only like white beauty isn't ridiculous, it's literally what society has done to us.

Nope. I made no assumptions about your race. You clearly assumed mine, though. Which is amusing, considering.

As I’m not the one who can’t think of a single non white person they find beautiful, I don’t think I’m the bigot, here. 😊

You keep saying you want to stop, but you’re not stopping. Bollocks, indeed.

Are you black? You just said mixed raced.

If you're black surely you are aware of how darker skinned women are treated compared to light skin?

Even in the black community white beauty is idealized to the detriment of black girls.

Nosferatutu · 08/05/2024 00:57

She’s beautiful but I don’t get that OMG moment like I do with say Jodie Turner-Smith. She looks beautiful and somehow regal in wacky red carpet looks.

Some of this thread is reminding me of around the time of the Barbie press tour, some men claimed that Margot Robbie was ‘mid’ Grin
