I don’t generally care about the Met Gala, but my jaw dropped when I saw this photo.

Can you imagine walking around looking like this?!

To think Anok Yai is one of the most beautiful women on earth?

I'd never heard of her before. You're right, OP, she is beautiful. What an intriguing face.

Meghan Markle is also beautiful.

Worthitforthe · 07/05/2024 21:37

I thought Meghan was beautiful but her character has overshadowed that initial opinion sadly. Can't get past it when I see her picture.

We know nothing about the woman’s character apart from what’s been reported by a demonstrably biased press. Come on, now.

In case anyone’s wondering what she looks like with no/minimal make up, here’s a pic to save you Googling.

Still stunningly beautiful, imo (and the opinions of the multiple modelling agents that talent spotted her at uni and the world leading designers for whom she’s opened shows - this is not a niche view 🤣).

I don't find her attractive in your original opening post photo, and she looks very plain in this un made up photo.

Not ugly, but definitely not naturally pretty.

Who would you consider spectacularly beautiful?

Farah Fawcett was the most stunning woman ever, and knocks Anok Yai into a cocked hat.

Oh she is genuinely meh to me. I think it’s the chin, I can’t abide a bum chin… but she looks like she’d be cast to play a horsey upper class Brit and not much else.

Maybe if I’d been around in her heyday, I’d understand it.

StoneTheCrone · 07/05/2024 21:35

No. She's very striking but I dont immediately jump to beautiful. Thats a very flattering picture of her.

Agreed.
I find most supermodels similar tbh. Fashion houses go for the same looks. Height, body shape and pointy angled faces which, no matter how perfectly proportioned they may be, don't look beautiful to me. I wouldn't want to gaze at them again and again.

I find soft, sweet faces beautiful like Meghan Markle

It’s interesting, because I see soft/sweet faces as ‘pretty’. Sometimes extremely pretty, like Meghan Markle. But beauty, to me, is an entirely different quality.

@MarzipanGenius

I don't really know, I haven't really thought about it.

Without sounding like a misogynist, putting people into boxes ...
'Pretty' is very common. Most women who are slightly above average looking are pretty. Beauty is more rare

I wouldn't call Kate Flannery (Meredith from the office) or the chess champion R. Vaishali pretty. They're decidedly average or below.
Jenna Fishcher (Pam from the Office) is pretty, but not beautiful.
Meghan Markle is beautiful. So is Deepika Padukone.

Willyoujustbequiet · 07/05/2024 23:08

No. I dont think she's very attractive. Sorry but I don't get it.

pistonsaremachines · 07/05/2024 23:10

Also I find Emma Watson and Emma Stone beautiful.
Maya Erskine is pretty.

CantBelieveNaive · 07/05/2024 23:14

Are we really still treating women like objects and a lost of body parts and not full humans? WTA?

MarzipanGenius · 07/05/2024 23:20

@pistonsaremachines So, I agree that ‘pretty’ is fairly common and beauty is far rarer. However, I wouldn’t call people pretty if they were slightly above average. I think everyone you consider beautiful is pretty (apart from Emma Stone, who is perfectly pleasant looking, but not pretty to me).

It’s really interesting how differently we all perceive beauty.

Agree, Meghan Markle is a very beautifu womanl! Don't think it's "rare" to think this at all.

mactire · 07/05/2024 23:25

Emma Stone to me is the definition of a ‘handsome woman’. She looks good but it’s in a sort of striking (rugged?) way instead of being delicately pretty.

Well it's also how people use words 😂
I can distinguish between something that's perfect, in an abstract sense. And something that I like looking at. And something that I know other people will consider perfect and/or like looking at. But not me.

R.e. slightly above average - the definition of average is well , ordinary. Anybody above that is pretty because to me that's like the lowest level of 'good looking'. I appreciate that the dictionary definition is in a 'delicate' way, but that's not how I use it.

Ah, now when I hear ‘handsome woman’, I think Katharine Hepburn or Anjelica Huston. Maybe an older Jessica Lange. Presence, iyswim?

Emma Stone is cute, to me. Wholesome. She looks like she could be a spokesperson for dairy products.

Fair point about use of language. 🤣

I've never thought about it, but I suppose my lowest level of ‘good looking’ is ‘pleasant’.

Margot Robbie. I think she's mesmerising.

And I really wish I didn't but Kendall Jenner and Megan Fox.

Are you mad- plain in the natural photo? her face is objectively exquisite. If that is plain then God please let me be plain like her.

Just because she doesn’t meet a Eurocentric definition of beauty doesn’t make her plain. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but if you can’t see her objective facial symmetry and striking features then I think you have an underlying bias deeper than just personal preference.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 07/05/2024 23:43

YABU. Not even top 10.

MissMoan · 07/05/2024 23:46

I wish I could wake up like that 😂
It does feel that those wearing so little clothing seem desperate to stand out.
But to me, the ones who looked truly beautiful at the Met Gala were the ones who wore a smile - Pamela Anderson, for instance
