Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

Do you have a history of rats in the house? Are you able to go to the kitchen and turn the light on without going in?

Spaghettimouth · 05/05/2024 21:56

Oh gosh I’m here with you. Slow, deep breaths. Could you make a loud noise to scare them away or are you too scared? You have my sympathy xx

He’s had mice before i moved in but this is a really loud noise and I can’t see it being anything other than a big fuck off rat

I feel your pain I'm terrified of rats and mice. Just out of interest why did you leave the food on the side and not in the microwave or oven?
Can you go upstairs? I'd have hot footed it out of there

parietal · 05/05/2024 21:57

Turn on all the lights. Make some noise. Count to 10. Then go in.

curtaintwitcher78 · 05/05/2024 21:58

My bet is a cat.

i’m only about a metre away from the kitchen door but the way in which the sofa is facing means I can’t see in. The phobia of rats is bad enough that I refuse to look in there in case I see it

I have that fear as well I hate them. Had them in our house once so know that panic. They would definitely be more scared of you though. Hope your ok.

HappyGoLucky96 · 05/05/2024 21:59

I understand what you mean with a phobia with rats I get them every year in my garden! Couple years ago I was moving my bins and 4 jumped out and one was under the bin I screamed the street down I was petrified like shaking! My mum and my neighbour literally p*shed there pants at me! It’s not funny I will never forget that day it’s horrible

hugs 🩷

ComeAlongPeggy · 05/05/2024 21:59

Call your partner and ask him to come home NOW!!!

Houseplanter · 05/05/2024 21:59

Cat

AGlinnerOfHope · 05/05/2024 21:59

It will be a cat. A rat wouldn’t be that noisy.

whats the food?

AGlinnerOfHope · 05/05/2024 22:00

Bellow and slam the door.

Kidulthood2027 · 05/05/2024 22:00

The other day when we had some sun my partner sat outside to have a beer and when I came downstairs after working from home in the office I found him there having fallen asleep with the back door that leads into our kitchen wide open, so something could have easily come in

ComeAlongPeggy · 05/05/2024 22:00

Or hold your phone out and see if you can video the kitchen without having to look directly?

Can you close the door so that anything in there can't get to you, and then go upstairs? Let someone else deal with it.

Keroppi · 05/05/2024 22:01

Once I thought I had mice in the kitchen but it was a bag for life that was slowly unfurling from being scrunched up - could it be something like that?

Otherwise whack the TV up louder and bang something on the floor and then go in kitchen so you've startled them away.

Kidulthood2027 · 05/05/2024 22:02

It’s really fucking loud, I am quite deaf at the moment from a very bad double ear infection and have the TV on very loudly and the noise from kitchen still made me shit myself as it was so loud and oppressive

OP posts:
whoopsa · 05/05/2024 22:03

Those saying cat because rats wouldn't be that noisy; rats are LOUD FUCKERS. Do not be fooled.

I've been woken up by one gnawing through my bread bin whilst I was asleep upstairs before. Horrible things.

Kidulthood2027 · 05/05/2024 22:03

Tbf maybe could be a cat? The kitchen window has been open all day as we had the dryer running earlier and a cat could jump in from our patio table. Especially as I have left salmon out

OP posts:
whoopsa · 05/05/2024 22:04

(Sorry OP, I appreciate my previous post is not helpful to you. Sit tight, it will be scared of you and will disappear soon.)

Kidulthood2027 · 05/05/2024 22:05

Partner isn’t a fan of rats either and is likely to be drunk when gets home, so not looking forward to that conversation

OP posts:
Kidulthood2027 · 05/05/2024 22:06

I genuinely feel sick

HappyGoLucky96 · 05/05/2024 22:08

My kitchen window is open too! Just the luck I’ve had this week I’m shutting the window now
