Noises in kitchen, absolutely shitting myself

First of all, I have a huge phobia of rats. To the point I can’t function if there is one nearby. I have fainted before when seeing one as a teenager.

anyway, partner is currently out with a mate and won’t be home for a few hours. I cooked my dinner and left his portion on the kitchen counter next to microwave for him to warm up when he gets in, as I’ll likely have gone to bed by then. Went back into living room and put TV on not thinking anything of it, door to kitchen slightly ajar. I can now hear rustling noises. Really weird, the dryer and washer aren’t on and I can’t think of anything else that would explain the noise. It’s really loud though, like something has taken food from the plate and is dragging it along the kitchen floor/kitchen counter, I’m genuinely terrified and physically can’t move from the sofa to go and look. The kitchen counters are raised a few inches from the floor so would be easy for rats to be under there. I’m really frightened so please talk to me until partner gets home as I genuinely am stuck to the sofa with fear.

Lock yourself into that room!

Emdubz70 · 05/05/2024 23:10

This reminds me of years ago when I was alone at night and heard weird rustling from behind an armchair. If kept on for about 15 minutes getting louder and louder. I was frozen still and my heart was racing.

It turned out to be a bag of Munch Bunch yoghurts that I hadn’t realised were there. They’d obviously fallen out of sight and in the warm weather were expanding and exploding. The relief when I finally plucked up the courage to investigate 😂

I've currently got a rat in my loft. Rentokil are trying to get it for me.

JennyfromtheBlok · 05/05/2024 23:45

@Emdubz70 That is bonkers 🤣🤣

FanofLeaves · 05/05/2024 23:49

It’s probably fine. Are you really going to summon your boyfriend home from a night out to eat salmon and check for non existent rats? it doesn’t even sound like rats!

Take a deep breath, go and have a look. Nothing is going to be able to physically hurt you.

FantasticButtocks · 05/05/2024 23:56

A fox? 🦊

Sometimes noise can travel strangely. I’ve sometimes thought there’s something or someone In one of the rooms in the house then realised because the window is open, I'm actually hearing someone do something in their garden close by.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 05/05/2024 23:58

The last 3 times i've heard random rustling in the past few months, it was snakes :P Granted i own them and they'd gotten out of a faulty tank, but its still quite a shock to look up and see a snake cruising toward you, or half sticking out from under the TV cabinet when they usually live upstairs.
dad almost brained my hamster a few nightas ago thinking she was a mouse/rat at 1am after she learned to open her cage door and scuttled in to his room. Until beginning of this year we had a bad mouse problem ongoing for a couple of years, turns out a floorboard had rotted near a air vent and there was a hole they were pushing the carpet up from. It was only when a big fuck off rat came in, and i came face to face with it a few feet away on the side table next to the sofa i was sitting on, we ripped up the carpet and found the hole. Patched it and nothing since, when previously i was hearing if not seeing mice every day.

pocketaces · 06/05/2024 00:00

Well, what was it?

YeahComeOnThen · 06/05/2024 00:09

@Kidulthood2027 so did your knight in shining armour sort it out?

FlamingoFloss · 06/05/2024 00:13

We need to know! Hope it’s a cat and not a rat

papadontpreach2me · 05/05/2024 22:43

How did they get into your flat? Can rats climb?

Yes! They can. They’ll take an easier route if available but they can climb.

Here for the update OP!

Hibye23289 · 06/05/2024 00:25

This isn't to scare OP but for the people saying she should have shut the door, if it's a mouse I am pretty sure they can flatten themselves and get under the gap. Anyway let us know

Wigtopia · 06/05/2024 00:34

Any updates op? A few years ago in the summer we heard a weird sound from the kitchen and it was a baby fox raiding the bin!!!

Floatinginatincan · 06/05/2024 00:50

Dear me, just go & look in the kitchen. What a palava.

Bournetilly · 06/05/2024 00:59

Hope it was a cat

Cat

Or maybe a.fox

TheFunHasGone · 06/05/2024 01:14

I'm going for cat, my cat went into the neighbours house and stole his chicken breast. He spotted him dragging it out the window.

Turns out he'd also been to the bathroom and left a turd in the bath

Your neighbour or the cat? 😂

Duckingella · 06/05/2024 01:16

Shamelessly place marking

I've a thread on here about my A-hole appearing on my patio with a roast chicken one Sunday afternoon;a poor neighbour nearby had clearly lost their dinner to my cat;cats are absolute scavengers.

Not going to lie;I would have been enthralled by a fox cub in my kitchen bin.

AMinutesPeace · 06/05/2024 01:18

A little mouse can be surprisingly loud. In a previous house we were woken up one night by what we thought was a burglar. When we bravely went downstairs armed with a big torch we found it was a little food-stealing mouse making all the noise. It ran back out the way it came when it saw us.

BettyBardMacDonald · 06/05/2024 01:22

Rats have done a great deal for humankind in terms of biomedical breakthroughs and there was even one in New Zealand awarded a medal of honor for sniffing out land mines. You can google it.

They are smart and funny and more frightened of you than you are of them.
