To finally be looking forward to a GE?

1000 replies

Cadela · 04/05/2024 21:32

The past election/PM changes have been horrendous. The visceral disappointment was awful each time.

I can’t wait to actually celebrate this year. I know, I know, Labour are going to set fire to the economy and tax everyone £3mil each and it’ll cost you 4 trillion a month to send you kid to private school, and all women will perish immediately because only Tories know what a woman is Hmm

But finally! It’s been a long fucking time coming.

Hahah…yes, I can’t wait.

I can’t wait for a government run by people who hate my history, my heritage and my identity and will do all they can to destroy it (or what’s left of it).

I can’t wait for a government that is going to increase tax, borrow too much, blow public money on ‘diversity and inclusion managers’, and drive out the businesses on which our economy depends.

I can’t wait for a government who thinks the boatloads of undocumented young men landing on our shores are all genuine refugees fleeing “war and persecution.”

I can’t wait to see the population increase and the countryside disappear under a sea of housing estates. Who wants trees and fields and flowers when you can have rows and rows of disgusting rabbit hutch houses jammed on top of one another? In 2022, net immigration was 700,000. To house those people, we need two new Manchesters. God knows what will happen under a centre left government. Maybe they could reach a million extra people a year. Africa’s birth rate is so high the African population is going to double, so it’s certainly do-able. No wonder Starmer calls himself a YIMBY.

I can’t wait to continue working in a job I hate to pay the generous welfare payments Labour will introduce. I know so many people who cheat and exploit the benefit system that I hardly know where to start. People like my vain, arrogant cousin, who has never done a days work in his life, yet still manages to go on fishing trips to France and take photos of himself (and his fake tan) in the local gym. Clearly his bad back and depression aren’t that bad. I’m sure he’s looking forward to the GE as well.

Oooo…I’m rubbing my hands together in excitement.

Its been a lovely sunny day today, have you been enjoying it?

My gut feeling is it won't be quite the landslide that everyone's expecting. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up with a hung parliament.

Agreed. There are a lot of silent voters. And they usually vote conservative.

Fairyliz · 05/05/2024 17:55

I’m old enough to have lived through both labour and Tory governments and let’s be honest they are all a shower of shit.
I’ve realised that whether my life has been good or bad has depended on my personal circumstances and whatever government has been in power has made very little difference.

I am also frustrated at the dumbing down of the real issues with distractions. Rwanda. The war on disabled people. The culture wars.

A bit of jiggery pokery around VAT on school fees is nothing in comparison to the hate filled distractions the Tories have deployed.

What have Labour said that they will do regarding disabled people?

Bearing in mind Labour have not released a manifesto yet.

So all we know for sure is that they (say they) believe that some women have dicks, and VAT will be added to some education, but not all.

What’s the point of Starmer’s Labour if it won’t stand up for poor, sick or disabled people? | Benefits | The Guardian

The party should be a beacon of hope for people on benefits. Instead, with a 30-point poll lead, it’s parroting Tory soundbites, says Guardian columnist Frances Ryan

That is certainly exactly what we saw on Thursday.
Many thousands of silent Tories steathily came out and voted for Susan Hall, Andy Street (although he may have confused them by disowning the party prior to the election) and the rest.

In what way do they hate your heritage and history? That sounds like something straight from a Daily Mail induced moral panic. I think it’s probably your values they have an issue with.

Their aim is to work towards an immigration system that actually functions and does so in a way that doesn’t dehumanise other people and incite hatred. They’re not set on destroying the countryside, but providing affordable, fit for purpose housing for the many families (perhaps consider Thatcher’s Right to Buy scheme for a factor in the shortage of social housing, the profiteering of landlords, second homes, failure of the government to meet development targets for many years).
The Tories have blown millions, so let’s not forget that. I hope you share the same amount of vitriol for the rich and powerful who evade tax every year as you do for your cousin.

BronteH · 05/05/2024 18:06

Not a manifesto is it? 😂

Nothing about what they’ll (not) do for disabled people. As per the article I posted. You love the guardian don’t you? They tell the truth don’t they?

Also ‘Closing private education tax loopholes to improve schoolsWhat this means: ……Through closing this loophole, Labour will raise vital money needed to improve standards in stretched state schools with more teachers.
This funding will also help pay for mental health support staff in every school, working to boost the wellbeing of young people, many of whom still suffering the effects of lockdown’

😂😂😂🤯🤯🤯 Do they think the electorate are stupid?

To finally be looking forward to a GE?

SocksAndTheCity · 05/05/2024 18:12

Well obviously it's not a manifesto - why would any party publish a manifesto when there isn't an election?

You're complaining because something that has no reason to exist, doesn't exist?

Suella Braverman reckons Tory voters are on strike. Oh the irony.

Jojoanna · 05/05/2024 18:30

Neither Tory or Labour have ever done anything much for me.
1997 was exciting and the NHS did improve a lot.
Nowadays it's a bit meet the new boss same as the old boss

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2024 18:30

Well, you will have to give the new boss a chance first to find out if they are indeed the same after 14 years of the old boss.

It’s 27 years since we met a new Labour boss the morning after an election. High time we repeated the experience.

Well yes because it worked so well in Greece when they tried to add VAT to education

The Tories have done pretty well overall. You can't judge 14 years on one budget gone wrong, or global pandemics and Putin's war which we've took the hit on economically.

Is this satire?

I have no idea any more.

eise · 05/05/2024 18:54

Lavendersquare · 04/05/2024 22:07

@eise for the record there will be no Vat on education if Labour win, there will however be VAT on private school fees which feels right to 95% of the population that do not send their children to private schools.

There will also be closure to the loophole that allows the self employed or company owners to offset private school fees against their tax liability which again feels right and fair.

And that's exactly why I won't be voting for labour and another reason why I will move my business to another country with favourable taxes so I can afford the VAT.
If Labour's policies were not "class wars", I would consider voting for them.

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2024 19:02

Around 3 in 10 children (4.3 million children across the UK) live in poverty but VAT on private schools.....

Can I recommend meals of tinned tomatoes and lentils, cancelling your netflix and taking in ironing Hmm

Also steathily voting. Which is why the Tories did similarly well.

It should be a nice early Christmas present. I think they’ll drag it out to near the bitter end though, and make us wait. Seven months before the celebrations can start I reckon.

I don't think they'd leave it till December, poor weather makes it more difficult for the elderly members of the population to vote. (Demographic most likely to vote Tory).

They have already tried to suppress voting with ID requirements and most non passport/driving licence types are forms of pensioner ID such as bus pass.

I think it may be September when the students are off to uni and may not bother to set up a proxy/ postal vote. Labour and Lib Dems need to do a massive publicity push on this.
