To ask how much you spend on your holiday?

How much do you spend a year on your holiday and how much is this as a percentage of your income?

E.g. do you earn £30,000 as take home pay and spend £1000 a year (3% of your take home pay).

I'm just wondering as I earn an above average amount, but when I'm on holiday I feel like I'm scrimping compared to the other people I see holidaying and I'm wondering if these are the super rich or if people spend a much larger proportion of their take home pay on holidays

Household income circa £100k
Holiday budget around 10% which will cover a family holiday and maybe 3/4 weekends away.

loverofalmonds · 04/05/2024 18:59

single parent
2 children
£70k income
£8k in total including weekends away

Beezknees · 04/05/2024 19:00

Household income after tax is £30k (I am a single parent with one child).

Probably spend around £5-£6k a year on holidays, so around 15-20% of total income. My rent and bills are low though so while I am not wealthy, I can afford this amount in proportion to my salary vs outgoings. I don't own a car, don't have to pay for childcare as DS is old enough not to need it, and we live in social housing so my rent is cheap.

As there are only 2 of us, this gets us 2 holidays a year plus some weekends away. Usually do one long haul and one short haul. Next year we are going to Greece in May, which is costing under £2k and then Bali in summer.

TipsyKoala · 04/05/2024 19:05

Take home household annual pay about £45k and we spend about 10% of that on holidays, some years more, some less.

takealettermsjones · 04/05/2024 19:05

Between 10 and 15% of take home pay. When I'm done with paying childcare, that will go up. Love going on holiday.

Ponoka7 · 04/05/2024 19:05

I'm away next week, the whole holiday, with spends will cost a month and half income, at least, just for me. My DD's away with her two children, she'll spend around two and a half months income on it. Then another month's income on a city break with her eldest. That's about average for the people we know.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 04/05/2024 19:09

I’d say about 4% ish? 4k.

A big family holiday every couple of years which would be about 2.5%. Then DH and I each have a break alone which is a few hundred each. Then a few short UK breaks with the kids.

NevergonnagiveHughup · 04/05/2024 19:10

20% of take home pay.

AhBiscuits · 04/05/2024 19:10

It varies a lot from year to year so difficult to give a figure. Maybe about 5%

Trickabrick · 04/05/2024 19:12

Around 10%, had never actually thought about it before.

quietlifeneeded · 04/05/2024 19:14

You have to remember all that glitters is not gold! those people who appear to be throwing money all over the place.. think about where that money might have come from..

did they save all year, have they been saving for years for this once in a lifetime holiday? have the put it all on credit cards, have they taken out loans?

my answer was very glib.. my husband has a private income and thats what we use for our holidays.. we spend about 10k a year, usually 3 or 4 cruises a year. his cruise attire is entirely 2nd hand!

longdistanceclaraclara · 04/05/2024 19:21

20% ish of take home

ohmydays37 · 04/05/2024 19:22

Take home total £85k.

Family holiday with adult kids (only just) £6k and £4k on 2/3 trips just dh and me.

BrendaSmall · 04/05/2024 19:26

Dread th think what percentage of wages we spend on holidays 🤣
3/4 times a year we go abroad each holiday around £3500 , husband goes away on his own and that’s around £2000,
He earns around £33k I earn around £18k
i only pay 1 bill a month everything else comes out of his wages, I pay for 1 holiday a year

sleepyscientist · 04/05/2024 19:32

3-6% maybe on average. That's a standard 2 weeks 5* all inclusive for 2 adults and DS one year then a cruise or the Caribbean the next year. We also have about 10% that we spend on family time so things like weekend breaks or theme park trips.

We need to get better at treating ourselves to big things and not wasting money on the little things

Wow, I'm intrigued how you manage on this budget & get all those hols. Sounds bliss & we earn more but are struggling for 1 hol. Do you mind me asking, are your living costs extremely low for some reason? We're not extravagant by any means.

i take it no children and neither of you are ones for saving or putting money in your pension or overpaying your mortgage (if you have one?)

MinnieMountain · 04/05/2024 19:52

I can’t be bothered to add it up, and I don’t actually know how much DH spends on trips by himself or just with DS.

The point for us is that it’s what we choose to spend our money on. We don’t have a car or spend a lot on clothes, we live in a reasonably priced area.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/05/2024 19:52

About 10%. We are high earners.

QforCucumber · 04/05/2024 19:59

Joint net income £50k,

family holiday once a year - budget around £1100pp (4 of us)
centre parcs once or twice - £1200 total
weekend away each with friends - £1000 each

we prioritise holidays and experiences over overpaying our mortgage and saving too much. After 2 of DH friends passed away in the last 18 months we’ve decided that life’s too short to have it sat in a bank account.

Airdustmoon · 04/05/2024 20:04

I’m always amazed by the amount some people spend on holidays. One of my friends (childfree) goes on about 7-8 trips a year, lots of them just short breaks but she really splashes out, think hotels that cost £800 a night, business class flights etc. She is a high earner but I reckon her annual travel budget must come to at least £20k.

In contrast we have one sunny abroad holiday a year (always Europe, usually around £3k for a week not including spending money), usually one short city break (this year Paris, total cost around £1k inc spends) and then we’re very lucky to have family in Cornwall so we usually go and stay with them once a year with no accommodation cost. Total - about £5k maybe? Which is about 5% of gross income.
