To ask how much you spend on your holiday?

How much do you spend a year on your holiday and how much is this as a percentage of your income?

E.g. do you earn £30,000 as take home pay and spend £1000 a year (3% of your take home pay).

I'm just wondering as I earn an above average amount, but when I'm on holiday I feel like I'm scrimping compared to the other people I see holidaying and I'm wondering if these are the super rich or if people spend a much larger proportion of their take home pay on holidays

Blimey I feel very miserly. We earn £75k between us and spend about £2/2.5k on a week in UK in summer and then a long weekend at center parcs out of season.

I don't really feel like I have spare £ floating round for much more even with a pretty small mortgage

cheddercherry · 04/05/2024 21:40

Household take home about 80k and I’d say we spend about 10-12k ish on holidays/ breaks away throughout the year. It varies as sometimes we may do a more expensive long haul, other times we travel for a more extended period over summer. We’re up north and have a small mortgage compared to most (I assume given the average) and we can both work remotely/flexibly so it’s much easier even with a child to go away at less peak times.

thaegumathteth · 04/05/2024 21:42

Joint income approx £70k

Usually about £2-3k

Florida once that was a lot more.

Dread th think what percentage of wages we spend on holidays 🤣
3/4 times a year we go abroad each holiday around £3500 , husband goes away on his own and that’s around £2000,
He earns around £33k I earn around £18k
i only pay 1 bill a month everything else comes out of his wages, I pay for 1 holiday a year

how do you live?

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 04/05/2024 21:44

About 5% this year, last year was over 20% though had saved for ages for that.

princesspadam · 04/05/2024 21:47

I have no idea what OH earns

We go away 6-9 times per year, long and short haul
Some are cheapies e.g 5 nites in Tenerife
Others will be a week all inclusive in 5* carribean

uggmum · 04/05/2024 21:50

Household income is around d £130k
We are spending around £22k on 5 holidays.

Bluebellsanddaffodil · 04/05/2024 21:52

Our household income is a little under £100k and we spent about £4,000 last year.

This year we will spend about £6,000k on our main holiday, I've spent about £300 on a mini break and we'll likely spend another £500 on a U.K. break.

DailyEnergyCrisis · 04/05/2024 21:54

Joint take home around £170k
Approx £6k £7k on a holiday and a few weekends away.

Killmewithatune · 04/05/2024 21:56

9K (9%) this year big long haul holiday and 2 small breaks and around 4K other years of just a week and a couple of small breaks. Based on take home pay. This includes spending money too.
This seems quite small compared to others. We do travel independently and book all our own flights hotels etc, whether that makes a difference I'm not sure?

MonkeyPuddle · 04/05/2024 22:00

Weve had a week camping at Easter for £80, Butlin’s in term time for £300, camping in summer hols for a week for £300. Will likely get a couple of weekend camping trips in as well at local sites for £50 or so.
We like cheap and cheerful. Plus it’s what we can afford. Means we get to go away and spend time with each other and the wider family a good few times out of the year.

obsessedwithfreshbread · 04/05/2024 22:01

Household income around £110k we now spend around £10k on holidays and weekend breaks a year.
This has recently increased from about £3k as we've been overpaying the mortgage and only have a few years left on that and pensions are healthy (DH 55 already receives his occupational pension) before he 'retired' it was many years of camping holidays

MonkeyPuddle · 04/05/2024 22:02

Oh and we bring in £60k between us but are saving as much as we can.

BobnLen · 04/05/2024 22:04

Between £10k and £20k, we are retired so income only about £50k, it comes out of separate savings which we put aside for this

Lesina · 04/05/2024 22:05

Household income circa £110k spend around £25k a year on holidays so approximately 25%. Wouldn’t have it any other way

SuspectedInsomniac · 04/05/2024 22:05

Household net income is a bit over £4k a month, about £50k a year. We're 2 adults, 3dc.

This year we have:

  • Feb HT in Scotland, about £700
  • Greece in Aug, AI for 10 days - £6300
  • Me and dh only, 3 days in Spain AI - £1k.

Add on a bit of spending money and it's probably about £9-£10k, so 18-20% of net income.

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 04/05/2024 22:08

Household income is around 200k but we don't spend much as a proportion on holidays. Last year we had one abroad and one uk holiday. Total was probably around 6.5k for all of us by the time we had paid for spending money.

This year we will have two abroad holidays. Total will be more like 10k I would imagine.

TeenLifeMum · 04/05/2024 22:08

Household income £110,000 and about 6k on main holiday and one weekend away. Family of 5 though so nothing too exotic.

I’m surprised by the amount people spend compared to income. We love travel but need to save for a car too. I feel we should have more spare money than we do.

Singleandproud · 04/05/2024 22:10

Myself and DD £31k income
We tend to do city breaks as we live near a lovely sandy beach.
Last year: 3 nights at local Haven down the road for DD birthday with three friends ~£400
This year we've had / have booked:
2 X 3 night UK city breaks ~£1000
UK Geology family field trip on Jurassic Coast 7 days £1000

JaceLancs · 04/05/2024 22:11

Income 50k - I take 3-4 holidays a year and spend about 2-3k

redastherose · 04/05/2024 22:13

My income is £60k this year I took my 2 DD's to Japan as both had big birthdays. This is a special treat so £16k this year.

Meggie2008 · 04/05/2024 22:17

Variable.
In 2022, we did a Europe roadtrip, cos us around £1500 all in.
Last year we went two holidays, totalled around £2500.
We aren't going anywhere this year, as we get married in March so are saving where we can. We are however going on our honeymoon next year which is coming in at around £8800

Meredusoleil · 04/05/2024 22:23

Absolutely gobsmacked at the amount of money people are paying for holidays 😳

I think I must have totally lost touch with the reality of how much holidays cost these days. Despite having travelled quite a lot in my younger years, it's not the same when you have to pay for the whole family along with a mortgage and bills!

Pllystyrene · 04/05/2024 22:24

Family income around £50000 holidays probably amount to 10% but we tend to do a bigger holiday every 2/3 years and smaller uk holidays in between.

MariaDingbat · 04/05/2024 22:27

I'm amazed at the amount people are spending on holidays. I thought we'd pushed the boat out on our honeymoon but it was less than some people summer holidays! Currently we're have a joint income of just over £80k and will be spending £1k on 4 nights away in the UK this year, so 0.8%. However we have a childcare bill of almost £1700 p/m so I'm a few years done of that will be redirected towards trips away.
