The way disabled people are being treated and spoken about on here in recent days is disgusting. It is verging on online hate crimes and if ithey were about other marginalised groups would not have been allowed to stand by MNHQ.

The disinformation, the sneering, the complete lack of compassion from so many Mumsnetters is vile.

Disability for the very most part isn't something that people bring onto themselves. Parents don't do anything but have different luck to you and have a disabled child.

My genetics are different to yours so I have a fucked up immune system and the host of problems that has given me.

My DH had a horrific upbringing which has led him to have MH problems- he works by the way. I did too for a long time until my body couldn't cope.

My DC was injured at birth due to a hospital fault.

My neighbour fell off his bike and has a traumatic brain injury.

My friend has breast cancer.

My cousin is dead at 38 due to epilepsy.

My nephew is so unhappy due to his ADHD bot letting him fit in at school and my sister is having trouble helping him through it due to hers.

Why are we so unworthy to you?

Are we not due the same courtesy of online treatment as those of different races and religion...or does that go out the window as you pay for us?

@MNHQ why is it acceptable for you to allow your users to bully the marginalised on this site?

You have access to the medical records of the people in your community? How?

Obviously I'm their Doctor.

No matter what I say it will be wrong.

I grew up on a housing estate. Very sadly my brother grew up on the same estate, took drugs, developed mental health issues and was dead by 30. I went to a good uni and got a law degree. He wasn’t traumatised or particularly deprived and neither was I. He was bored and easily led and made poor choices.

You can not divorce people from responsibility for their actions because they have had a tough time of it.

So you and your brother couldn’t have had different experiences and perceptions that led him down a different path to you? Were you parented differently? I can almost guarantee you were if you were different genders and ages etc? Was one more ‘’liked’’ than the other? There are loads and loads of different factors that can make one sibling turn to drugs and the other not. Who did your brother mix with? There’s so many variables other than growing up in the same family.

Thequeenofwishfulthinking · 03/05/2024 22:13

It’s worrying how many ignorant people are on this forum. They have no compassion, the mental capacity to differentiate or show empathy for other people who are less fortunate or different to them.
It would be very interesting to find out if their draconian opinions would change if they were to fall on hard times or for something difficult to affect their loved ones.
You are not special or a moral judge just because you have been lucky enough to be in a comfortable financial position and/or have good health.
You don’t necessarily deserve to be fortunate but that is life. Things can change in a heartbeat. Stop thinking you are superior to others. Pride comes before a fall.

Well either you are telling fairy tales or you are abusing the confidentiality of your patients/clients.

Neither is a good look.

This is utter bollocks.
Should women avoid going past builders who might heckle and harass them?
Should a black person avoid an area where racist graffiti abounds?
Should a jewish person not look openly jewish in an area where people shout antisemitic abuse?
Should we all just look the other way and avoid bigotry and predjudice?
Mumsnet is open to all and should not have no go threads which disabled people must not read to enable hate to flourish without being challenged.

It's open to all. Exactly. And as such, all should be free to state their opinion, including me, without being shot down.

This does mean that some people, like yourself, might not like what I say. But I am not bullying you, any more than you are bullying me by disagreeing with me.

People have a choice, they can either join in with the discussion and put their point of view forward, or they can move on. It's a choice.

It's not a discussion forum if you can't pass an opinion incase someone is offended. It becomes a self absorbed echo chamber.

This thread was started with good heart and intentions but yet again it's full of nasty people. I think maybe these people just get a thrill out of saying horrendous things from behind a screen because they are very sad with no life Let's not give them any more attention just ignore their sick comments and feel sorry for them

You cannot pass your opinions on being and living with disabilities on benefits without living it. No one has to accept anyones opinions unless they themselves have lived it. It doesn't wash with other protected characteristics, it shouldn't with disability

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/05/2024 21:54

I wasn't aware they were.

But personally with the exception of a few antisemitic posts I've never seen racism be allowed to stand ( I'm from a mixed race family) but I've seen some horrific ableist bullying and indeed actual threads stay up in contrast.

Racism is often allowed to stand. Posters on Black Mumsnetters have even been chastised by the moderators for discussing their experiences of it and its how often it crops up on this site. Race and disability are not interchangeable. There is an overlap but there are significant differences. Being a Black or Asian disabled person is likely to mean you will face more obstacles and prejudice than being a white / white presenting disabled person.

Yes, they told us at medical school that it wasn't a good idea but I'm really stressed out and over worked and trying to get pensioned off so I figured it was worth a punt.

I've only realised I can quote now...I thought it was for premium only.

Perhaps I used the wrong words....online bullying isn't quite right.

As we've explained having a disability is a protected characteristic so like someone who is Black or Asian or Jewish we shouldn't have to read that we shouldn't procreate. Because if you said that to someone Black, Asian or Jewish you'd be advised to join the BNP and your comment would be removed ASAP.

Yet in thread after thread, comment after comment we are questioned why did we have children? Why have another if 1 was disabled? Dear God you have THREE DISABLED CHILDREN. And OP has to explain her children didn't show signs of disability until they were all here....yet what a terrible mother she is.

Would non- Jewish posters be continually allowed to tell a Jewish mumsnetter that they knew how to keep kosher better than she did. As disabled Mumsnetters can be lecturered endlessly by others with no empathy into how they should treat their illness and then they could work....perhaps open a coffee van?
No the PP on that kosher example thread would be rounded up and probably banned.

But we are open season- take any shot you like and there is always the fall guy of those benefit cheats to make it all OK.

Making comments about paying tax so that people who are struggling with addiction can entertain themselves seems pretty nasty to me.
