Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

All the pathetic Tory apologists bleating about higher taxes if Labour win have evidently missed the fact that we're already paying the highest taxes for 70 years under a Tory government. Saying you are a low tax party but then imposing higher taxes only appeals to the exceptionally dense.

Edited

I haven't missed that or fact demographically and due to services being cut to bone - we need more money to spend but our really high levels of debt making borrowing harder and much more expensive - leaves raising more revenue only way forward and while many like to believe rich or others should pay more in reality it will be all of us.

It's a tough situation for any new government to be walking in to - stating that doesn't mean I'm a tory apologist or voter.

I'm currently unimpressed by Labour shadow cabinet as a whole - though I'm unimpressed by calibre of any parties politicians at minute - but not being Tory is almost best thing about them which is frankly worrying - come election time they may turn that round we will see.

So again, there is no positive reason to choose them; they just aren’t the other guys.
And when they are a disaster the resulting collapse of faith in democratic politics to deliver a decent government could be very dangerous.

Getting rid of corrupt, self-serving people is a pretty great reason.

Plus imagine what they'd do if they were voted in despite fucking this country over. They'd know they can get away with anything.

SherbetDips · 03/05/2024 16:40

God knows but whatever it is it won’t be good. Labour love to spend money on appeasing everyone! And then we get in a pickle and the Conservatives come along and take it all away and it’s an endless bloody cycle.

CurlewKate · 03/05/2024 16:40

Strange how people think higher taxes are a bad thing.

passtheajax · 03/05/2024 16:40

Allnormalhere · 03/05/2024 16:36

But when they WERE at school, you didn't want them mixing with the riff-raff in the state sector?

Yes they went to state school. Many parents of SEN and ND children have to send them to private school to avoid the problems in the state sector though.

Are you serious? Libel claims? This is politicians we're talking about. Are you seriously trying to paint the Tories as a party of honest upstanding folk? If so you may be interested in a bridge I have for sale.

You don’t think accusing identifiable individuals of being thieves is libellous?
blimey.
if I ran MN I don’t think I’d ever sleep again.

WithACatLikeTread · 03/05/2024 16:38

You think Labour aren't corrupt and don't have questionable MP's? They are as bad as each other. It isn't just a Tory thing.

Edited

It's mostly a Tory thing. Of course I don't claim Labour are whiter than white but they aren't as bad.

I think you are talking absolute bollocks since you ask, but MN can remove my posts if they are scared as you seem to be. It would be very odd if they were though.

Right back at you 🏓

You are assuming that I like the Tories. I don't. And I don't like the Labour Party. I think the economic landscape is highly limiting and both parties will look broadly the same, but Labour will pummel a barrage of social progressivism - with it's consequent harms- on the population that will frogmarch us to Canada-esque madness as a side plate.

Very well informed legal opinion here, clearly. consider myself told.

Welovecrumpets · 03/05/2024 16:32

The party I want doesn’t exist, I suppose the closest likeness would be New Labour under the early days of Blair. I also want a party who isn’t ashamed to remind the public that for services to be provided it all costs money that they must provide. I want decent hard working people to be rewarded and not held to ransom by those with self imposed ‘needs’.

Hard working people are not held to ransom by people with needs, self imposed or not.

Wages do not match the cost of living. The Tories have not spent on public services. Energy prices rose because of war. Food prices have risen.

I’m sorry but I’m getting tired of the stupidity here. Doesn’t anyone look into how things actually work before forming their opinions?

CurlewKate · 03/05/2024 16:40

I don’t think it is. I’m happy to support those in desperate need, but not others at the expense of my own quality of life. I suspect many others feel the same.

Having to put up with a complete shit show of Tories, I would be very pleased if they are even marginally better. Which is not going to be hard. I fucking hate, HATE tories. I came to live in this country during the Labour rule, I was so happy, I loved it - and since then I have seen it disintegrate into complete mess, nothing works, everything is depressing and crap. I still love UK regardless but this government is complete pits. Anything but them.

I strongly object to higher taxes from a party that keeps claiming to be "low tax" and spends the cash on stuff like the Rwanda scheme.

Strange how people think higher taxes are a bad thing.

There's been cost of living crisis where people have been seeing their bills rise and wages stay the same for couple of years now combined with increasing rents and house prices - no one like paying taxes but tend to do so in return for services.

Services are increasing restricted and lower quality - so higher taxes when money already been getting uncomfortably tight for many at same time - who is going to be keen.

At same time I do think it's unavoidable.

I'd like my decimation of women's rights to come with something a little more ambitious than marginally better.

Exactly.

They've done their own knees.

People can keep posting 'But Labour' but it won't change how shit this lot are.

The behaviour issues.
Lack of suitably qualified teachers.
Violence
Strikes
Very large class sizes.
No individual teaching or attention.

Surely you comprehend this is not the case for every state school in the country. If it was the case I’m not sure how my DS’s 6th form has managed to secure 160 Oxford and Cambridge offers in the last 3 years!
