Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

Informed?! It's not information, it's wishing. A policy would need a how.

You could only know it is a good summary, having read the link. I am so pleased you have taken the time to do so. Being informed is very important.

No answer to my question. Do you lack the information?

It's all supposition really at this point.

The current government have proven time and time again that they don't care about women, children, disabled people, carers or other vulnerable people in society.

Why on earth would I believe that they suddenly want to look out for us now?

Better to go with someone who might look out for us, than someone who's had 14 years to but hasn't bothered which has made me certain that they won't.

I don’t agree they will do the right thing for women wrt gender ideology, but I can see you think Labour will help in other areas

I question funding though, as it looks a little light. So far there seems to be VAT on education

Can you say what you expect in terms of caring, do you mean in benefits to certain groups? So more of overall tax take to go towards that?

He is useless.

The voters don’t think so.

I think they’re waiting for Keir to work it out. It’s placeholder spam until then

And that gap will only increase with the VAT as it will push put middle earners and make private schools affordable for only the wealthy.

WE are middle earners and most of the people we know are middle earners - NONE OF US could afford private school - it IS for the truly wealthy only. If a family has anywhere between 20k-30k spare cash after tax per year to spend on schooling (and that could be doubled if 2 children), once they have factored in mortgage/rent, food, bills and all the other things children need ,then they are wealthy. No idea how a "middle earner" would afford it.

A mentality that its not a bad thing for the state to run things.

A view that the public sector can be a positive thing and not simply a cost you are constantly seeking to cut.

An understanding that we don't all have the same start in life or the privilege some have.

Knowing that a capitalist economy doesn't reward all hard work equally and we often need to intervene via the tax system to make it fairer.

A sense that public health and education systems are something to take pride in, assets to protect

A perspective that all children are our future, not a burden, and we must ensure they all have the opportunity to thrive.

So, motherhood and apple pie then. Cool. Welcome to the era of feelz over policy

Bibnle636 · 04/05/2024 18:00

God are they still banging on about private school fees?

Read the room( or the country folks), nobody cares. Back in the real world we’re worrying about the nhs, dentistry, MH, public transport, the environment, cost of living….

Livelovebehappy · 04/05/2024 18:01

If Labour get in, I think we know how it’s going to go. Labour being cloak and dagger about how they’re going to fund this Eutopia they’ve promised us, until after they get in. Then the middle earners will be taxed to the hilt, because there’s only so much they can squeeze out of the top earners. But those on benefits and the lower working classes will be looked after very well (not saying the under privileged amongst us shouldn’t be looked after, but shouldn’t be at the cost of those of us who are in the middle). I also worry about the influence Rayner will have - she’s a Corbynista, and will certainly have a lot of ‘old’ style Labour policies she will want to implement. She’s not quite as vocal as she was a couple of years ago, I suspect because she’s been asked to tone down her persona until after the GE.

Desecratedcoconut · 04/05/2024 18:01

I do think the elastic term of the middle earner has been stretched beyond capacity in the education vat discussions, tbf. I'd call myself a middle earner and I'm fair old scrambling just to put together reasonable funds to put three kids through uni. Private schooling was never on the cards.

The internet is kind of magic isn't it.
If you click on the link that I provided you can then read about Labour's policies and then if you want more information click on the embedded links on that page to find out more.

Forgive me, but those of us who have SN kids in independent schools care quite a bit. I get we’re not very numerous, but I’d always been led to believe that left leaning people believe that minorities count. Has that changed?

By saving for 8 years in our case. FYI it is 15K per year around here. We have a tiny mortgage on a tiny house in the NE.amd whilst other people chose to upsize we chose education.
Of course we don't have 20K spare per year. However once VAT hits these the only people who will be able to afford private school are those with 20K + VAT per year, thereby widening the gap.

There are 95K kids in private education due to SEN. I don't call that number insignificant but they don't play into Labour's narrative of the elite.

@NefertitiV frugally 😂 if I stopped eating, sold my car and moved the family to a tent still couldn’t afford private education.

Some of us have SEN kids in the state sector and aren’t rich.

The NHS and its staff did that. The Tories just took the credit.

What a ridiculous thing to say. Of course the Government had no hand in it 🙄
The NHS may have implemented it but the Government managed it. Do you think 'the NHS' and staff just decided one day to do it? How old are you? 5?

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/05/2024 18:06

CrappySack · 04/05/2024 17:13

I really hope so! I dread to think what the country would be like if these Tories stay in power. They already take the complete piss out of us. Imagine what they'd do knowing there's no consequences.

They won't stay in power and all the But Labour...🙄 shite in the world won't save them. The problem the Tories have is the Tories.

They've failed. They've had 14 years in government and they failed. They alienated the new voters they got in 2019, but worse than that, they failed so many of their core voters, farmers, the Middle classes, small business owners, Tory MPs etc.

I think it’s the relevance to your claim that people ought to have planned for a tax change which would have been unlawful until about two minutes ago which the casual reader might be struggling with. Do enlighten us.
