Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

If we are talking about parties and dodgy donations it’s important to mention Vaugaun Gething accepting £200,000 which helped him win the Welsh Labour leadership from a company convicted of environmental crimes

https://amp.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/may/02/labour-concern-donations-vaughan-gething-campaign-wales

“Firms run by David John Neal, a donor to Gething’s campaign, illegally dumped waste on the Gwent Levels, leading to his conviction.”

Correct. The process would be gradual. The LNER line is already in government hands, I can find no mention of any purchase of trains from the franchisee.

But they would need to purchase trains from somewhere or invest in building new ones.

This. Come live in Wales for a year, I promise you it’s worse than England.

In what ways, exactly? Because I live here and it seems fine to me compared to where English friends live.

@RandomButtons I don't think what's happened in wales is a good indicator. In Wales Labour have limited powers, in particular no influence on national tax policy. They are trying to deliver public services while hamstrung by Westminster & in particular the treasury who hate devolution

You’re incorrect- Wales has the authority to set its own rates of tax, same as Scotland.

They’d rather chase random bizarre trendy projects than fund education or healthcare.

Because 1997-2010 were years of milk and honey, weren't they, unless you were one of poor sods who had to work to pay for it!

I was one of the people who worked through the 1997 - 2010 period and I can state with my hand on my heart that they were years of milk and honey compared to our situation now. Things really did get better.

Labour would still have to buy the rolling stock though.

Some Labour chap on the radio said the rolling stock would be leased as it is now ?

what you expect from Labour when/if they win

Constant blaming of the previous government, how they would have handled Covid much better without actually saying how, they will have a free ride to implement policies that deride women.

Well after decades of Labour being in power in Wales we’ve achieved all of one of your wishlist.

Meanwhile the schools are crumbling and neither my kid or myself can get the medical treatment we desperately require. Not even on a waiting list, just a blank “sorry you can only have that treatment if you live in Cardiff”

You understand where the budget for Wales is set, yes?
Ive lived in ‘not Cardiff’ for most of the time I’ve been in Wales (since 2001). I absolutely don’t believe you about only having a treatment if you live in Cardiff. Only able to access it if you go to Cardiff, yes. But there’s no ring fencing of facilities for certain areas.

I just want to see anyone but the Tories have a go at it. I don’t expect miracles. They’re taking over from a shit show.

yup and they took over from a shit show....anybody remember Tony Blair?

Why? The trains are useless to the former franchisee. Presumably there’s some clause in existing contracts that they’re left in place at the end of the contract. The LNER ones appear to be exactly the same, down to the branding.

😂😂😂 The Tories are notorious for blaming the previous government for everything, even though it’s been 14 years since they were in power.

Sorry but you are wrong. I don’t live in the Cardiff health board, but it would be an easy journey.

Cardiff will not accept patients from my board for three specific services, one of which is potentially life saving for my child.

It’s a sixth form college so roughy 2500 but still good for state.

Yes it's good. I know which college you are talking about.

I am just intrigued to see if the Tories are going to make a hat trick x 2 and shuffle in another PM before the election ? 9 months until they have to hold an election, will Sunak make it to the bitter end ?

The Tories didn’t take over from Blair. And the last Labour government wasn’t a shit show either.

Are you thinking PFI again for this or from somewhere else? Where?

It would just be a damned good change to have someone in power with the will to improve things rather than drive them into the ground.

I say this as someone whose husband has spent months waiting for cancer treatment, who can't get medication, who has spent the last two years regularly driving 80 miles to see the nearest available dentist.

Those posters saying 'how will we pay for it?' should ask about the human cost of not finding the money from somewhere.

Those posters crying their hilarious tears of laughter are laughing at those of us who are suffering under this deliberate Tory regime of stripping away all public services and safety nets for the ordinary people in this country. All to line the pockets of their rich friends.

It's not funny that people are not getting medical treatment.
It's not funny that people are homeless.
It's not funny that mental health services are just not available for people desperately in need.
It's not funny that our rivers are full of shit, our public transport system is failing and our roads are falling apart.
It's not funny that children are in poverty.

Is that because they are already at capacity and aren’t accepting anyone? Again, health services aren’t regionally ring fenced.

Yes, with great nostalgia. We had public services that worked and virtually no child poverty. He presided over the best 13 years of my adult life.

@JudgeJ The tax burden now is at an historic high isn't it? With taxes constantly going up while they pretend they are going down? And yet, rather than record investment going on in line with this, we are told there is no money for..., well, anything, really. Unless it's David Cameron's private jet, Sunak's helicopter or pouring money into the Rwanda scheme.

No the services are accepting patients from Cardiff (I’ve asked in support groups). I’ve been given no further information, only been told I have to go private or can “treat at home” which if you knew the conditions you’d understand could be fatal even if done carefully.

BlaHaHa · 03/05/2024 21:43

A continuation of governments who make false promises. Rack up debts, make money on the side for themselves. More of the same!

You still need a way to fund such things though.

And I’m not seeing it so far. Education VAT is one policy on the table and it’s absolutely tiny, if anything at all.

I think it’s tough atm especially given the rising requirements of an aging population but where will the extra £ come from?
