Just curious. I’ll be voting for them reluctantly but I’m not really sure what can or will be done about the state of the country. It seems we’re skint so they’ll just have to tinker around the edges.

I mean there is absolutely no evidence to even suggest that Starmer would be 'ousted' if he won an election. None. This is just silly.

It’s very silly but then this is MN. 🤷‍♀️

You really believe this when some of the biggest donors to Labour are private healthcare hedge funds?

Who are the biggest donors to Tories? Sit down next to me!

twistyizzy · 03/05/2024 19:00

HeresMyBreakdown · 03/05/2024 18:01

They will get used to it like everyone elses kids have to 😀

So a race to the bottom and gleefully pulling down private school kids rather than raising standards in state schools?

TooBigForMyBoots · 03/05/2024 19:02

Puzzledandpissedoff · 03/05/2024 18:43

Starmer or Sunak?

I have no crystal ball, but wonder about a push for John McDonnell to replace Starmer if the extremists get their way - otherwise probably Andy Burnham

Harder to say with Sunak since several front runners are predicted to lose their seats and they may consider it's too late now to get him out before the election, but personally I'd favour Penny Mordaunt

Penny TWAW Mordaunt?🤯

I'm not the one saying that Labour will save the NHS!
Labour aren't promising any significant increases in spending. Therefore, unless they raise taxes things won't improve because they aren't prepared to fund changes.
Old Labour and the principles have died, the Labour parry today is neo-liberal same as Tories. They are Tories in sheep clothing.

cardibach · 03/05/2024 19:02

Saintmariesleuth · 03/05/2024 18:40

@cardibach it is for now. Labour obviously gained a lot of seats yesterday, but I agree with whoever posted above that this was more about kicking the tories than actual support for Labour. There is a historical trend for the incumbent government to lose seats in local elections.

Additionally, most of the opinion polls on Brexit predicted a remain outcome.

I say all this as a traditional Labour voter who admits to being a socialist. If a party has alienated someone who should be a 'natural' voter, something is very wrong. Politics is a mess and change is desperately needed. There is too much mud slinging, lack of proper debate and lack of understanding about how society and services work across all parties, many of whom put the needs of the general population last.

I want the tories out- but to be replaced with.....what?

The use of the phrase ‘admits to being a socialist’ shows you have an agenda here…

Is this the new version of
But Jeremy Corbyn
Keir's Beer
knowing what a women is
Rayner did something?

I imagine it will be just as effective.

In answer to the OPs question.
I expect that Labour will deliver competent sensible government, and not shy away from the myriad of problems that their predecessor's have created and ignored.

It will not be all sunlit uplands, but gradually incrementally improvements will occur.

So not actually knowing what a woman is is not important?

Otterly2 · 03/05/2024 19:04

HermioneWeasley · 03/05/2024 13:52

I expect women’s rights and child safeguarding to be abandoned on the altar of gender ideology

i expect our foreign policy to be dictated by anti semites and British Jews to feel wholly unsafe

i expect education to be a mess when people who can’t afford to pay VAT on private school fees scramble for places

i don’t expect any appreciable improvement in public services because there isn’t any money and Labour will support workers striking (which is sometimes legitimate and in other cases not) - trains will continue to be an unreliable and expensive shit show.

Angela Raynor’s workers rights bill is so bonkers even some unions think it’s mad, so we can look forward to companies being hesitant to hire people and rising employment costs keeping the prices of everything high.

don’t get me wrong, I think the tories are a shit show as well. I just think things won’t be any better under Labour.

Agreed.

There’s a couple of slight differences the VAT policy which is a gimmick but they’ll struggle to deal with trafficking

Especially if it’s enforcement officers, I mean what’s the capacity for cleaning up billions in trafficking networks

Yes but VAT won't raise anywhere near enough what they are claiming as anyone who scrutinises the policy knows.
There isn't capacity for anything because Reeves won't dare raise taxes and wants to balance the books through keeping Tory spending plans.

Yep I agree with you, that’s why economically it’s pretty much the same

You just have gender ideology on top and enforcement officers for traffickers

That’s it. Not much to go on

There’s clearly not the shortage of money we’re led to believe. How much has been sent to Rwanda? Public services can be vastly improved by spending the same amount of money differently.

Why are private school parents so snobby and condescending towards state schools and their pupils? It's so unnecessary!

Why are state school parents so prejudiced against private school parents?
Over 35,000 kids in private schools are there due to SEN needs not being met in state schools. Many 1000s are military kids who, if they didn't board, would have their education severely disrupted by constantly changing schools every few years.
The sweeping generalisation of private parents being ultra wealthy are ridiculous but Labour has managed to persuade people that this is a fact.
The only fact is that VAT will make private school the enclave of the truly wealthy as bursaries and scholarships will be cut and middle earners pushed out.
Starmer was happy to take advantage of private education, his wife was privately educated and his kids take advantage of private facilities in their schools but he wants to pull up the drawbridge after him and prevent anyone but the really wealthy to benefit. It is pure hypocrisy.

Otterly2 · 03/05/2024 19:12

Welovecrumpets · 03/05/2024 15:39

I don’t want them to build more houses. We already have serious flooding and environmental issues due to a lack of green spaces.

Yes I have huge concerns about this and Starmer's dreadful plans to build on the green belt.

In answer to your first sentence - because they make such snobbish, condescending comments about our children and the schools they attend, just like you did. The rest of your rant has nothing at all to do with me or my opinions so I can't answer that.

Most people aren’t prejudice more like most people don’t give a shit!
Private school parents are just parents I am the sister of some of these parents who are lovely and kind, it’s not like the plebs haven’t come across these special beings but ultimately they are probably not a major political concern!

And you are condescending by tarring all private parents with the same brush. My "rant" was pointing out that private kids and parents aren't all 1 homogenous group in the same way that state school kids and parents aren't.
