To be completely shocked about someone I used to know

When my youngest was at primary school I really liked this woman who had kids either side of mine.

She was in the PTA equivalent and was just a nice woman. There was no drama around her.

I remember having a day off and went into the local cafe, and she invited me to sit with her friends. She was funny, warm and witty.

Significantly, she had friends of all ethnicities and her best friend was Asian.

Everybody will relate to being busy but I think if it was a different time in my life or we had kids in same year we would have been mates.

I am absolutely shocked that she is a member of a right wing political party and has a presence in that party, utterly and completely shocked.

I know it’s not illegal but God.

All three of my siblings are Tories, I’m not someone who thinks everyone has to think like me but I am stunned.

Mumsnet hates this, but I have had a physical reaction to the news. I am just Gobsmacked and weirdly let down and I do know that’s a stupid, irrational thing to say.

I am an immigrant and I just joined Reform.

If the current liberal-flavoured politics driven by the protected elite carry on much longer... Well, they'll fuck up this lovely country for everyone - including all those "doctors&dentists".

What are the elite protected from? From the reality.

OP is shocked that someone she knows can be warm and friendly, as well as intelligent and critically thinking. Says more about the OP than the woman in question.

Exactly 👏🏻

Mayflower282 · 03/05/2024 19:45

Have you actually read Reform policies? I just had a look, I’m not right-wing, but a lot of the policies make sense!

Polishedshoesalways · 03/05/2024 19:47

People can decide for themselves - we live in a DEMOCRACY ✌🏻

SabreIsMyFave · 03/05/2024 19:36

It's the Brexit party. Lol. Bore off OP and move on.

I cannot believe adults are still 'falling out' with people who voted for Brexit.

It's pathetic isn't it? Like FFS grow up! 🙄And move on! It's been 8 years since the LEAVE vote won!

Brexit wasn't a one-off event that people are still being 'pathetic' over. It's a process that will keep on being painful for years to come.

People saw loved friends and family leave because of Brexit. They still miss them horribly. Your comments seem to miss the point. It wasn't just a vote - it deliberately ushered in a new, poorer and sadder way of life for many people.

I think possibly, you could also 'grow up' and appreciate that it's not just about the "LEAVE vote won." It's much more complex than that.

Jesus christ get a grip

@pugwash4x4
It always makes me laugh when someone makes a comedy statement like "I'd never f a Tory". *

Oh, but they do, particularly if the "enemy" sports a pretty face. I field-tested this thoroughly whilst perusing dating apps during Covid 😁😎

"LOL. 😂 I am assuming you are taking the mick???

Otherwise you are proving my point (and that of many others) that SOME left wing (especially far left,) are as narrow minded and bigoted as some far right - if not worse! 😬"

Definitely worse @SabreIsMyFave because they're annoying as hell to boot with the po faced holier than thou, right side of history crap 😆

Right-wing populism is associated with euroscepticism, opposition to immigration, anti-environmentalism, neonationalism, welfare chauvinism etc.
Left wing politics - social equality and egalitarianism.

Is that a joke?! Tongue in cheek. Very good!

'Right wing' as in centre right, extreme right, fascist? Would have helped to explain a bit more in the first post OP ...

And yet Leavers whinged for 41 years after the 1975 referendum in order to get their vote. Seems that was OK, but we are all supposed to sit back and shut up now. Not going to happen. Sorry.

We are an island and cannot house everyone. Are you blind to the mess the UK is in? British people very soon having to work into their 70s to keep paying the bloated welfare bill and other costs associated with a grotesquely overpopulated country? We are not responsible for everybody!

maryanne3 · 03/05/2024 19:56

Polishedshoesalways · 03/05/2024 19:51

Please just grow up.

No, you have the maturity to realise that a 41 year campaign of whinging on the part of Leavers was apparently OK, but Remainers are not allowed, apparently, to say a thing since 2016. That is not adult behaviour, that is bullying and intolerance. You grow up.

And where do you think the current mainstream political parties fall, in that analysis?

tillyandmilly · 03/05/2024 19:57

Everyone is entitled to their own political opinion - I would not be a friendship breaker for me !

NorfolkSwan · 03/05/2024 19:58

juggleit · 03/05/2024 19:41

Some of the most right wing people I know give tremendous amounts to charity so I don't think its binary, good or bad in being one political persuasion or another.

Some are quite open about their political views.

I suppose there is more to being right wing than just your view on immigration/welfare etc, perhaps a strong leaning to entrepreneurialism which in itself is not a terrible thing!

I think you have over reacted a bit.

It’s definitely not binary. Why does the myth continue to persist that only people who might vote Conservative support effective immigration controls. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that many, many people who traditionally vote Labour feel very strongly on the issue of immigration/illegal immigration/the need to control our border and know who is coming in. Why aren’t people able to step out of their echo chamber and apply some critical thinking to all these issues, and how they are portrayed by the media/on social media.

Well I would hope that the Labour Party leans towards social equality and egalitarianism (prob not as much as they should) and the Conservative party leans more towards the right wing ideas and values.

Maybe because of Labours record of having non existent immigration controls? Or just looking at the total absence of a plan should they be elected.

You are deluded - period. I don’t call someone on TAX FREE benefits to the tune of £3000 per month taken from the taxes of those who work to be social equality! I don’t call people who work not able to afford eating out, holidays, etc whilst those on benefits have it all. With the exception of the genuinely disabled, this is unacceptable
